SENIOR RUGBY COACH WINS AWARD On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the school community, I wish to extend my sincere congratulations to Mr Steve Orr, the Coach of the JPC 1 st XV, who was awarded the Coach Of The Year for Secondary School Rugby. A well-deserved reward for his dedication and passion to JPC rugby. YEARS 11-13 STUDENTS BEING N.C.E.A EXAM READY Teachers are in the process of ensuring your children are ready for NCEA exams. Please take an interest when they have exams and how much time they devote to preparing for them. All the educational research clearly shows that children do much better if they have parents who take an active interest in their learning. The essential features of the day include:- Students choose a work experience for the day which could include home, neighbors or local businesses Students work for the day 9.00am 3.00pm The students contribute a minimum of $20.00 to the P.T.A. If your child cannot find a job or you wish them to come to school you may send them in and they will be supervised It is not intended that the students simply have a ‘day off’ and you donate $20.00. Students should learn to develop a strong work ethic and earn the money I hope that you will see the day as a positive initiative and support it. A letter and permission slip will be distributed. John Paul College is pleased to continue the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award at the college in 2018.

The awards are open to students from ages 14-25 (students can start at 13 if they are turning 14 during the award time frame). There are three levels Bronze. Silver and Gold (please see attachment for time requirements) and four sections to each award, apart from Gold where there are five (residential project).

The teachers have found chromebooks or laptops are more appropriate devices for creating work on in the classroom. The Spark modem deal of 30gb for $10 per month is for families to have internet at home, my apologies for any confusion this caused. The students all have access to our school wifi while at school. MATHEMATICS NEWS ICAS Mathematics On the 15th of August, the annual ICAS Mathematics Competition was held. This year John Paul College gained 4 High Distinctions and 17 Distinctions. Carter Proudley and Ranithu Rodrigo were awarded a High Distinction in the year 7 paper. Ishan Nath and Ranithu Rodrigo were awarded a High Distinction in the year 10 paper. The following students gained Distinction: Andrew Vincent (year 7), Daniel Butterworth, Veronica Chen, Jenna Hastings, Jin Soo Jung, Ranithu Rodrigo, Danyon Wang and Ivan Zaw (year 8), Sequoia Dobson, Charlotte Hall, Mia Page, Ranithu Rodrigo and McKenzie Swinburne (year 9) Riley Boyce, Jasmine Hall and Adam Wong-toi (year 10); Ranithu Rodrigo (year 11) Otago Problem Challenge During Term 2 and 3, all of our Year 7 and 8 students competed in the Otago Problem Challenge. Students participated in 5 rounds of problem solving. Congratulations to the students who received certificates of Excellence and Merit – 16 students received Excellence certificates and 39 students received Merit certificates. RUGBY 2017 The season is over for the 2017 year

however planning for 2018 is up and running. Training is in the summer phase and we urge all of those that are contemplating playing rugby next year, whatever the age, to come along. This will make your season more enjoyable as you will be fitter and stronger. The focus is on your core fitness which has helped our 1st XV in the last couple of seasons get results. Contact players Byron Haigh or Daniel Frost-Jones to see when and where the trainings are. The 1st XV will be travelling to Beppu, Japan in February 2018 and they are included in the summer trainings. There will be a Fundraising night on the Saturday 18th November, please keep this date free. Steve Orr was awarded the distinction of being Secondary Schools Coach of the Year last week at the BOPRU Awards. This award reflects the effort and time that he puts knot Rugby at JPC. Congratulations Steve!

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to John Paul College Year 13 actors Jessica Hawthorne, Lucy Pepper, Elsie Spiers and Eamon Walsh for their outstanding performances at the 2017 national finals of the PACANZ (Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand) National Young Performer of the Year held over Labour Weekend at The Globe Theatre and historic Regent Theatre in Palmerston North.

Eamon Walsh made it through to the semi-finals (6 performers). On the night, Eamon received the People’s Choice Award and Most Potential Award. Well done to all JPC actors with special thanks to the parents and caregivers who travelled to Palmerston North to join me in supporting our very talented actors – Gabrielle Thurston HoD Drama

YEAR 7 BEACH EDUCATION The following classes will be scheduled for the day Beach Education experience at Omanu Beach, Mt Maunganui. WANANGA AT JPC All year 11 students had the opportunity to attend a Wananga facilitated by Rawiri Tapiata of Tukaha Global Consultancy. Students were able to explore the Concept of Who Are You As Maori? and to participate in goal setting. The guest speakers were Marcus Akuhata Brown, Te Mauri Kingi Alayana Davis, Raniera Weiiri.

RUGBY 7s: Rugby 7s is approaching fast and all teams (not U19 boys) have a practice hit out tomorrow (25/10/17) at RBHS @ 4pm vs various local teams as a taster for the upcoming BOP tournament. The BOP rugby tournament is on Friday 3rd November (U14 boys, U15 boys, U15 girls) and Saturday 4th November (U19 boys and U19 girls). We will require PARENT transport! SWIMMING NEWS Three John Paul College students competed at New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championship recently as part of the Swim Rotorua Team:

Bianca Donelley (15yrs) won a silver medal in her age group for 100 backstroke, and bronze medals in 100 freestyle an 100IM. She also made the open age finals in 7 events.

David Boles (17yrs) placed 10th in the 17-18yr age group for 1500 freestyle. David made the open age ‘D’ finals in 400IM and 200 backstroke.

Kapua Warbrick (14yrs) competed in six events with her best performance in the 200m breaststroke where she placed 10thand 100IM where was 11th.

Eleven John Paul College students competed over the weekend at the Central North Island Swimming Championships. Twenty-six swimming clubs brought teams, from Palmerston North to Auckland. These students were an integral part of the Swim Rotorua Team which for the first time ever won the trophy for the top club. In the 11& under age group Emma Balmer (11yrs) placed 3rd in 100 breaststroke; In the 12-13 yr age group:

Joshua Balmer (13yrs) won 100, 200 and 400IM, 400 free, 100 back, and came 2nd in 50, 100 and 200 free;

Alex Cameron (12yrs) placed 4th in 50 free and came in the top ten in 7 other events. Jasmine Hagan (12yrs) placed 3rd in 50 free, 50 back and 200 IM and 4th in 100 back and 200 and

400 free. Lina Stahlhut (12yrs) was a finalist in all 4 of her races, posting best times and placing 6th in 100

back and 50 fly. Nikita Pola (12yrs) raced 7 events and was part of the 13 & under relay team that placed 2nd.

In the 14-15 yr age group: Bianca Donelley (15yrs) placed 1st in 50 free, 2nd in 50 back and 3rd in 100 back. Molly Sinclair (14yrs) placed 2nd in 100IM and 200 fly (in her debut in the race), and 5th in 50 and

100 fly. Milla Theobald (14yrs) won the 50 fly and 200 fly, placed 2nd in 100 fly, 800 free and 3rd in 200 free. Kapua Warbrick (14yrs) came 2nd in 100 and 200 breaststroke and was 4th in 100 IM. David Boles (17yrs) won the 200 backstroke, placed 2nd in 100 back and 3rd in 100 and 200 free.

NZ WAKA AMA long distance National Champions Makayla Timoti and Marewa Hudson won Gold in the Junior woman w6 national championships during the school holidays with their team mates from Hei Matau Paddlers. This is the 3rd consecutive year Makayla has won gold in this event, with Marewa's fist year competing at this level.

Makayla also won a Silver Medal in the Junior Woman's w1 10km NZ National Championship.
