Rotorua Newcomers Network. July 2010 Newsletter Saturday Basketball Every Saturday, the Filipinos play basketball at the Rotorua Intermediate School 93-95 Malfroy Road, from 5-7pm. The team plays for the Philippine Club of Rotorua and competes with other regional Filipino basketball teams for the National Championship title. We welcome newcomers to join us for a game or two. Come along to one of our game practice and ask for Sid Obregon, Sports Coordinator for the Philippine Club of Rotorua. Scottish Country Dancing Mondays. 7:30pm at St Andrews Church Hall 309 Old Taupo Road, Rotorua. Enjoy foot-tapping rhythms and a challenge? Try Scottish Country Dancing. Dances for beginners are quite simple and classes are held to help newcomers. Open to all ages who are reasonably fit and willing to learn from trained tutors. The club meets weekly to share a pleasurable past time of dance, movement and music, along with social activity. Zumba Fitness Classes Venue1: on Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm at Pilates Focus 1st Floor 1124 Eruera Street Venue 2: on Mondays 5:30-6:30pm , Fridays 6:30-7:30pm and Saturdays 1:30pm-2:30pm at Malfroy Primary School Hall 196 Malfroy Road. Cost: casual rate $5 per person or concession card $40 for 10 classes. Concession cards can be shared between friends. Note: please wear comfortable workout gear- shoes with a worn thread are easier. Remember to bring water and hand towel and be ready to party! Contact Gayle Rattigan on 021 203 9619.

Coffee after Zumba with Gayle Rattigan Gayle is a Zumba instructor in Rotorua and have been teaching Zumba classes since February 2010. She recently moved from London back to Rotorua with her husband so she understands what it is like for newcomers. She encourages friendship amongst her class members and have introduced a “Coffee after Zumba” on Saturdays. After the 1:30-2:30pm Zumba clas at Malfroy Primary School Hall, the class go for a coffee at Fat Dog Café to chat, relax and catch up with friends or make new ones. Rotorua Creative Fibre Club Thursdays. 10am-1pm. Studio 1 at the Rotorua Arts Village 1240 Hinemaru Street. Committee meeting on 1st of July at 11:45am. The group meets every week with a purpose too. They create items such as baby garments and blankets for donation to orphans overseas. They have a Soup Day on the 8th and are calling for volunteers for soup and bread. They will go on a Bus Trip to Fibre and Fleece at Opotiki on the 9th to attend the Fashion Parade and the Exhibition and Trades. There will be a Puff Pincushion workshop on the 15th, Weaving Day on the 22nd and a possibility of holding a Spin-in-Day on the 29th. Ineterested? Contact Delight Gartlein at (07) 357 2575.

Neighbours in our Community Last Friday of the month. 12:10-12:50pm. Join us to explore a country where our guest neighbour, Eric from South Africa, will share background information about his country, culture, customs and beliefs. Gain an insight into the challenges of setting in a new homeland. Learn a greeting or two in the local language as Eric talks about life in South Africa and how he and his family have now settled into living in New Zealand. Eric is a manager within the Parks and Reserves Department of Rotorua District Council and has been living in New Zealand for two years. Free to attend. BYO lunch, refreshments provided. Interested? Multicultural Rotorua Invites Rotorua Multicultural Council (RMC) We are an Incorporated Society established in 1996 to promote and protect the interests of multicultural groups in Rotorua . The Council is made up of communities, friendship societies and individuals who support our purpose: Netherland Society Rotorua, Rotorua Fijian Association, BOP (Rotorua Indian Association), Southern African Club of Rotorua, Philippine Club of Rotorua, BOP Philippines Friendship Society, Cook Islands Society, Whakarewarewa Village (Maori), Rotorua Chinese Association, Rotorua Korean Residents Association, Rotorua Arts Village, and individual members. The Council meets every 1st Tuesday of the month 7:30pm at the Community House 1115 Haupapa Street. Our office is located at Admin 2. Lewis House. Rotorua Arts Village 1240 Hinemaru Street. Rotorua Arts Village- Te Whare Toi You are welcome to tour the village, visit our shop or book an exhibition. Rotorua Arts Village is home to over 30 various clubs and societies in Rotorua –including Rotorua Multicultural Council and the Rotorua Newcomers Network. The village houses 2 exhibition venues, 3 studio rooms- 2 for hire and meeting rooms. A number of art exhibitions and events such as Bluesfeast in January and the Matariki Festival in June-July bring people and tourists to the village. Visit www.rave.org.nz for updates.

We aim to work alongside Settlement Support , English Language Partners, Citizens Advice Bureau, Family Works and other organisations and agencies to help migrants and newcomers feel accepted and welcomed while settling in Rotorua. We organise casual meetings or activities that encourage friendship and we promote community activities and events that celebrate our multi-cultural heritage.
