RACE #2 BANNON 4 AMEN ALLEY 1 LEO FROM HEAVEN 2 CROSS BORDER 5 HANDSOME LIKE ME

LEO FROM HEAVEN was competitive in this category late last season with aggressive positioning only to land on the edges; he was winless for the campaign; he has been busy with a series of spring works including consecutive quick preps at five furlongs for Sarah Ritchie. CROSS BORDER won his only race of last year at this distance but on turf when he produced a rally; Hernandez has the mount at this protected level for Robert Tiller; he extended to a recent five furlong workout.

D’S BEN took a longshot maiden win December 10th and was full value for an aggressive stalking approach and a quick move to the outside to steal it away for trainer Santino DiPaola; he now faces non winners of two in this return and indicates a couple of five furlong works. CRY BAO had a good work for Mike De Paulo April 18th in 1.02.1 with a good finish getting ready for this five furlong race; his best efforts come with late energy and Contreras rides in this return. CAT’S WHISPER won nicely second time out in a five furlong race with an aggressive stalking approach; in his finale in the Frost King, he was in against much too difficult a group including the runner up Silent Sting who was a stakes winner again on Sunday; the tenth place finisher in that race, Inge, was made a stakes winner by the stewards on opening day in the Wando; he worked a half mile recently in 47 for Shelley Fitzgerald. JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL APRIL 29TH, 2018

RACE #4 BANNON 1 SHANTELLE’S CHANCE 5 ICEBERG ALLEY 8 LOOSELY BREWED 9 ALACRITOUS

SHANTELLE’S CHANCE was in a key race to begin and was overwhelmed and faced tough opponents second time out and couldn’t keep up; when he dropped to this level for his finale, he was competitive on the pace losing out late; he now goes for Steven Chircop and Hernandez rides in this return. POOL BOY a debut runner for Latina Racing Stable is by Pool Play a Grade 1 winner at a route and is from a dam who has produced five winners; he competes for Bancroft DeSouza and has had three consecutive works at five furlongs getting ready for this opener. LIKE YOUR EXCUSE campaigned mostly at Fort Erie last season in protected races but comes up tagged in this seasonal bow and has been prepping here. MARSELAN was protected in his opening races last season then dropped in for $25,000 at a route late in his campaign and started a rally but couldn’t continue; he will begin at just six furlongs with a drop in this seasonal bow. ICEBERG ALLEY met opposition that was overwhelming good in both starts last season and now that he gets to run for just $20,000; he deserves a look; getting out of the gate promptly will be his initial challenge; the blinkers are on and he has had consecutive works at five furlongs. INSIDE MAN debuted last September at seven furlongs on turf and didn’t do much running then, yet, he gets to drop significantly for $20,000 and move to Tapeta at six furlongs in this return; he had a five furlong work in mid April and then had a shorter work closer to this return. CEPELINAS debuted last summer and at long odds was outrun in a protected race after an awkward departure; he drops for $20,000 and now goes for Anthony Pottinger and trained from the gate recently. LOOSELY BREWED was protected in all races last season and showed speed December 1st and had some interest from off the pace in his finale; the blinkers are on for this return for Daniel Wills. ALACRITOUS made a dash inside at a route against better last October when getting his second start but he didn’t stay the trip; like some others in here he drops substantially to go for just $20,000 and he does have the benefits of a series of local works. ARGYBARGY wasn’t a factor in a five race opening campaign last year; he competed at this range in his final two events; he has had consecutive five furlong works.

RACE #5 BANNON 2 UNDER LOCK AND KEY 1 AFLEET DOLL 4 PRINCESS MACY 7 CONGENIALITY

AFLEET DOLL figures to be a contender once again in this seasonal bow just as she was in her final four races of last season; she now competes for Steven Chircop and must come from the rail post here; she travels five and a half furlongs which is suitable and she is looking for a breakthrough wins.

UNDER LOCK AND KEY has had only two starts but won her opener last September with some front end style and second time out was beaten only late by Rockport Dancer who was entered in the opener today; speed is her game and she figures to be on the march for Nick Gonzalez in this seasonal bow. LAILAS PRINCESS was reserved back in her finale December 6th and made a thrust to the lead but couldn’t hold it late at this price at seven furlongs; she goes shorter for Anthony Pottinger in this return. PRINCESS MACY a fast individual, dropped down to try and cash in last July at five furlongs and tried hard all the way but was simply second best; she remains well spotted by Sid Attard. MOLINARO DEPUTY had a run on opening day but wasn’t a factor in the same race where Megalin Candy was better in second; she gets a little more room at this higher level. MEGALIN CANDY fought gamely inside in her April 21st return to the races for $9,500 to be second against the favourite; she is up in value. CONGENIALITY took the drop down last November off the shelf to ensure a victory for maiden $25,000; in this seasonal bow, she is also using the drop down angle for Colebrook Farms. ORPHAN QUEEN dropped in for $10,000 to try and ensure a victory in her finale October 8th and while she won the duel with the eventual seventh place finisher she lost the race late; she goes for twice that price in this return for Mark Fournier. VICTORIAN LASS had a win and two other shares last season for John Cardella and when she had a chance to use her middle speed in a maiden win in July she was dominant late; the stable has had some luck early in past seasons.

RACE #6 BANNON 4 TELLING YOU TWICE 2 WALDORF 5 CONQUEST SWAGMAN 1 STREET LEGAL

STREET LEGAL dropped down for his final two races of last year and did succeed in his finale for $9,500; he starts this year at seven furlongs from the rail post with Callaghan aboard and has the benefits of a recent five furlong work. WALDORF was last at Santa Anita in January and was at the back in March at the Fair Grounds; most recently he beat a few runners when dropped in for $15,000 in New Orleans on the turf; his conditioning should be helpful here as he is introduced to the synthetic surface by his new conditioner Martin Drexler. REMEMBERMIS was competitive for $20,000 last November when going second time off the claim and he galloped out strongly in a race at six furlongs and gets seven furlongs to begin this campaign. TELLING YOU TWICE attracted a claim for a minor sum in February at Oaklawn Park when dropping down to win and he came back to score for double the price for Norm McKnight last time beating non winners of two and the runner up has come back to win; he does have the benefits of a half mile work here. CONQUEST SWAGMAN took a big enough edge for $10,000 November 19th to ensure a victory and he galloped to the front; later, he ran quite well against a pricier set to be on the edges; he now he drops in for $20,000 to face non winners of three; he indicates consecutive works at five furlongs and has attracted Husbands. PANTHER KEY is going first time out at the meeting for Sam Di Pasquale; he has lengthened out to five furlongs for consecutive works getting going; his lone win of last year came on the turf in his second start of the campaign. RED AT LAST gave away value to run for only $9,500 last December and he closed too late; he is up in value from the widest post here.

RACE #7 BANNON 6 COLONEL CANUCK 5 TRAPPER’S DELIGHT 8 VAUGHAN 2 DOWNY BOY

MIGHTY ZEUS had some good preps last autumn but couldn’t convert as he was more attuned to making middle pace threats than continuing on at the end; he begins this campaign after a sharp gate work April 21st in 48.1bg for Mike De Paulo getting ready; he now competes as a gelding. DOWNY BOY a debut runner, is a homebred for Track West Racing Inc. and partners and is a homebred by, More Than Ready, and from a dam who produced the stakes winner, Winter, and also the local runner Gray Phantom; the stable was represented Saturday by a debut runner, Dance Ready; he worked from the gate April 21st in 48.1bg and Hernandez has been attracted. DANCING WITH ZORRO a debut runner last December had early initiative before backing away when Vaughan was in the runner up spot; he is bred to be a stayer but will remain at a short distance to open this campaign for Gerald Seymour. SCAT SARAN SCAT lost by double digits in his only two races back in 2015 and is now returning following an extended time away; he is a well bred individual by Scat Daddy who worked a half mile from the gate April 22nd in 48.4hg. TRAPPER’S DELIGHT a homebred for Frank Di Giulio Jr. is from a dam who has produced three nice winners for the local circuit; this one is by Trappe Shot a significant speed source; he worked on the training track April 9th in 46.2 getting ready for Robert Tiller. COLONEL CANUCK a debut runner for Conrad Farms is a homebred by the same dam who produced the local favourite, Constantino, an eight time winner; he was prepared at the Casse training center in Ocala and has had three five furlong works since coming here including a five furlong work April 14th in 1.00.1bg where he went the first half mile in 47. ATLANTIC CROSSING had sharp breakaway speed in three of his four races last season and took consecutive shares to end out his campaign; his final race came against Vaughan and he was one position behind that rival; he indicates a quick work April 21st in 1.00 getting ready. VAUGHAN was winter raced at Gulfstream and that should help; he remains at five furlongs and exits races where both the top place finishers have come back to win.

RACE #8 BANNON 4 GLAMANATION 5 SUMMER SUNDAY 1 AVIE’S MINESHAFT 2 LUVUTOTHEMOONNBACK

AVIE’S MINESHAFT showed off her stamina in three consecutive routes to conclude her opening campaign and missed narrowly in late October in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes when her late run on the outside just failed to land the top prize against a winner who had moved earlier into contention; she tries seven furlongs in this seasonal bow after winter prepping at Palm Meadows.

LUVUTOTHEMOONNBACK is a significantly bred runner by Malibu Moon and from the same dam who produced the local winner Fragrance; this one is from a dam who was a stakes winning sprinter; she has been prepared at the Casse training center in Ocala and came here to work April 21st in 59.3 finishing up her final quarter in 24.3 for Mark Casse. JAMAICA ME HOME woke up second time out June 10th for a win by a wide margin; she wasn’t as good in her final two starts when overwhelmed and she faced Glamanation in her finale; this will be her first start since July and she had an early work April 20th in 1.02.1h for Gordon Colbourne. GLAMANATION a stakes winner locally last season for Mike Doyle was second best in the Debutante Stakes here in September; she wintered at Palm Meadows where she had plenty of prepping and since coming home she has worked three times including a move last weekend in 1.12 flat; she is a contender. SUMMER SUNDAY was a good local story last year with wins in the restricted Nandi and Muskoka Stakes and she was improving all the while; she wintered at Palm Meadows with some of the others in here then had a stop off race at Keeneland April 8th where she tried an imposing group in the Grade 3 Beaumont; she was close only early against an undefeated winner; she was adding lasix on that occasion; she is home now and must carry 124 lbs. QUEEN’S FATE was an early developer and was able to cash in here last season winning the Lassie Stakes when coming off a win at Keeneland; she now returns coming off consecutive wide losses for Michael Maker; she has been prepping in Kentucky.

RACE #9 BANNON 4 GREEN DOCTOR 2 PURE PURITY 5 WILD N CLEVER 3 QUIDI VIDI

SHOW SHAPE attracted a claim for $10,000 last October and moved up for Steven Chircop to this level to run effectively November 25th when third beaten a length by, Pure Purity with Quidi Vidi second; she indicates three works at a half mile getting ready and has attracted Hernandez. PURE PURITY was able to win at this price range with speed on the lead last November 25th beating Quidi Vidi and Show Shape and they are both here; she does have the benefits of a recent work at five furlongs getting ready for Ralph Biamonte. QUIDI VIDI attracted a claim when dropped down last December and she was unable to continue her productive performances in that tough race; she had run second in this category the time before when Pure Purity was the winner; she has worked over short distances getting ready. GREEN DOCTOR ran infrequently last year with only three starts but did have a win in her spring return and will try that pattern again here with a plunge for $25,000; she last competed in July for $50,000 on turf which is a preferred footing for her and she finished third; Boulanger has a positive history with her and will be aboard for John LeBlanc Jr. WILD N CLEVER uses the same style as Green Doctor with aggressive speed but she managed to win only once last season and that came on the turf; she often pounds the pace and was reclaimed by Nick Gonzalez last September. ROCKPORT DANCER tossed her head at the break and eliminated herself December 10th when going first time off the claim for Mark Fournier; she gets to start anew here while traveling a short distance from the outside post in search of her fourth lifetime win.

RACE #10 BANNON 5 LITTLE CHRISTY 6 CRUMLIN SPIRIT 2 WITHOUT A DOUBT 4 PICASSO MOON

RED CABERNET won last December for the second time during her opening campaign; she had good speed positioning while the runner up encountered a difficult journey and that left her clear at the end; Hernandez was aboard for her most recent five furlong work for Ian Black. WITHOUT A DOUBT raced strongly late last season with a second lifetime score and then a runner up finish against a difficult front runner; she worked a half mile April 22nd in 48.1 for Ralph Biamonte; she was winter trained in Ocala. LADY BRIE had an exciting campaign last year split between a couple of different trainers and attracted a claim late in the season by Dale Desruisseaux for whom she was in the money in consecutive events to close out her season; she indicates six works getting ready and runs for the claiming portion. PICASSO MOON had some exciting late runs to win twice last season including a win here at six and a half furlongs in April when she was coming from New Orleans; she gets her first run since July of last year and competes for the claiming portion; she was prepared in Florida and has had two local works for Mark Casse. LITTLE CHRISTY showed plenty of promise early in her career and was advancing in stakes company last spring but a poor race on turf in the Damsel Stakes left her behind in double digits; she showed a partial recovery with a good race July 28th but then went on the shelf; she returns with a new conditioner now in the care of Catherine Day-Phillips; Boulanger took over for a work April 21st in 48.4 and will ride here. CRUMLIN SPIRIT tried some tough spots last season including the Grade 2 Bessarabian in her finale when beaten only four lengths in what was a quickly run race; she is a five year old and faces several younger rivals here but will have to hustle at just five furlongs.

RACE #11 BANNON 3 SHOW GIRL 10 IN THE MOONLIGHT 8 GEMINI 7 SUGAR BOW 5 SCARLET FLUTTER

ONE MOON was purchased earlier this year for $9,500 and will debut here for owner/trainer Krista Cole; she is bred to be a stayer top and bottom and will travel seven furlongs. MYSTIC NILE had a good finale December 9th; she was at the back early but moved forward late on the outside to narrowly miss at a route on Tapeta; she picks seven furlongs for this seasonal bow and worked recently in 1.00.4 for Steve Attard. SHOW GIRL debuted last December at Gulfstream sprinting on dirt and did not keep up at that time; a subsequent turf race in early January saw her just on the edges; she flashed some speed in a work here April 22nd in 58.4 on Tapeta and perhaps this footing will be her preference; she goes for Mark Casse. ELIZA JANE debuted last October on turf and made a very good middle move but she was done by early stretch in that key race from which the seven, eighth, ninth and eleventh place finishers all came back to win next time out; in preparation for this return, she worked April 21st in company in 1.01.3 with a closing quarter in 24.3 for Catherine Day-Phillips. REAL POINT was asked on the outside in a route race second time out last November but she remained one paced on the edges; she will try just seven furlongs in this seasonal bow for Robert Tiller. BERNARDINIS ARROW was winter raced at Tampa for Sam-Son Farm and had some midway prominence last time but then backed away when blinkers were added; she has been prepping at Keeneland for Gail Cox. SUGAR BOW showed plenty of potential in her January opener in Tampa with a steep close; second time out when more support showed her poor departure from the gate ruined her chances; she is hoping Tapeta will be a good footing for her late closing power; she competes for Calumet. GEMINI was running second time off the shelf March 29th at Gulfstream and dropped down and switched to turf; she had a well executed front end trip but the favourite came outside to beat her at the last moment after a courageous stretch run; she will try seven furlongs on Tapeta here for Sid Attard; she has prepped locally. SCARLET FLUTTER a homebred by Sam-Son Farm is beautifully bred and a full sister to, Smartyfly, a winner of the Wonder Where; she has had easy prepping locally for Malcolm Pierce. IN THE MOONLIGHT is a second representative here for Mark Casse and she saw winter action at Gulfstream without producing; she had early prominence in her latest before backing away; she has the benefits of a local work in 1.02 and will test out Tapeta here. ROSY’S RAINBOW an auction purchase by Stronach Stables, will debut here for Nick Gonzalez; early speed was obvious in an April 21st work from the gate in 36bg and earlier preps came at Gulfstream.
