Umbrellas were up and the streets were wet, but rain could not dampen the spirits of our Jester children and grandchildren as they proudly marched in our annual 4th of July parade. News From 2222CONABy Patricia Seeger

Construction continues, in spite of all the rain. The big news this month is the new 2222CONA website. Our board member, Carol, designed and built a website dedicated to keeping our neighborhoods informed about area construction projects. While the site is still under development, I encourage you to take a test drive. Once at the site, you will fi nd our mission statement, contact information and the projects monitored by 2222CONA. The information includes planning documents, site plans and drawings, if available. The question I am asked most is – “what will the development look like when it is fi nished?” If you go to http://www.2222cona.org you will fi nd drawings of both Ladera Bend and Vaught Ranch posted in the Documents section of the Projects tab. Financial Support of 2222CONA ActivitiesMany thanks to all who sent donations to support our activities. In 2006, 98% of our budget went to paying for the professional services of lawyers and land use planners. We are very grateful for all donations. Please send donations to: 2222CONA, P.O. Box 29602, Austin, TX 78755. Note “Jester/Canyon Ridge” on the memo line. Thanks!

Austin Energy Power Saver Program Are you aware of the “Power Saver Program” through Austin Energy? There are rebates, loans, inspections and free home improvements offered through this program. Here are two examples: Home Energy Analysis – homes aged ten years or more need an energy analysis. An energy analysis will tell you how effi ciently your home uses energy. This knowledge can result in lower electric bills, a more comfortable home and improved air quality for better health. By going through one of the City of Austin’s Participating Companies you can receive rebates up to 20% of certain improvements up to $1,575. Duct Diagnostic – ducts in the average 10–15 year old home leak 15% to 40% of the home’s heating and cooling right into the attic. Leaking ducts can also affect air quality in your home. They can pull dust and other pollutants into your air system. For $50 per air conditioning system, you will receive a complete report about the condition of your ducts. For additional information on these programs and other offers go to the Austin Energy website at www.austinenergy.com

7860 Lakewood Dr. Sellers Larry & Mary Raper “We spoke with three different Realtors from three different firms, but it was clear to us very quickly that Teresa was the best choice. We were impressed with her competence, courtesy and sincerity. Not only did she successfully stage and market our home, negotiate a great deal and shepherd us through the closing process, she made what is an inevitably stressful event in one’s life go as smoothly as possible.”

KITTIES NEED HOMESBy Carol Philipson of the Jester Pet Registry

Jester resident & pet lover, Lee Sherwin has been feeding, building homes and spay/neutering feral cats that live behind the Jester shopping center. Unfortunately, some of these cats had litters before Lee could catch them. Lee has three kittens ready for adoption now, but since she rescues kittens/cats from other locations as well, there are usually other orphans looking for homes. Lee also works with other rescue groups with homeless cats and dogs. So if you’d like a kitten/cat or know of someone who does, or would just like to help Lee in anyway, time, supplies, vet bills, give her a call 345-4814.

Look Up! Every August, one of the best-known meter showers – the Perseid -- makes its appearance! Comets shed the debris that becomes most meteor showers. As comets orbit the sun, an icy, dusty stream of debris trails along the comet’s orbit. If the Earth travels through this stream, we are treated to a meteor shower. Depending on where the Earth and the stream meet, meteors appear to fall from a particular place in the sky, sometimes within the neighborhood of a constellation. As such, meteor showers are usually named by the constellation from which the meteors appear to fall, a spot in the sky that astronomers call the radiant. The Perseid meteor shower is so named because the meteors appear to fall from a point in the constellation Perseus. The source of the shower is the Comet Swift-Tuttle, while itself nowhere near the Earth, its wide tail intersects the Earth’s orbit. As tiny bits of comet dust hit the Earth’s atmosphere at 132,000 mph, each makes a vivid streak of light when it disintegrates, and the shower is most intense when the Earth is in the dustiest part of the comet’s tail. Peak activity for the Perseid meteor shower is expected around the evening of August 12th, with a sharp increase in the hours after midnight. Assuming we have clear skies that night, escape the city’s

light pollution and fi nd a dark, secluded spot where oncoming car headlights won’t ruin your sensitive night vision. You’ll know your eyes are properly adjusted and your site is dark enough if you can see each star of the Little Dipper constellation. Position yourself so the horizon appears at the edge of your peripheral vision, with the sky and the stars fi lling your fi eld of view. Meteors will instantly grab your attention as they streak by. A very good shower will produce around one meteor per minute per given observer under a clear, dark sky. Any cloud cover, light pollution, or moonlight considerably reduces the count. The Perseids are among the strongest of the readily observed annual meteor showers, and at maximum activity will normally yield a statistical average of 50 to 60 meteors per hour. In reality, what usually is seen is what some call the “clumping effect.” Sometimes you’ll see two or three meteors streak across the sky in quick succession, followed by a lull of several minutes before the sky suddenly puts on a display once again. While the Perseid meteor shower is an annual astronomical event, this year gives us the opportunity for optimal conditions due to the new phase of the moon. And for an added celestial bonus, keep your eyes open for the total lunar eclipse on the 28th of August!

Jester Resident Seeks to Start a New Kind of “Women’s Group”

First Meeting August 20th at Waterloo Icehouse – 6:00 pmBy Arlette Lisansky

When someone suggested I write an article about my idea for a “Women’s Group” at Jester, I was initially excited. That excitement gave way to anxiety – I wrote one article and destroyed it. A second article didn’t fare any better. My problem was that as vague as my ideas were, I actually did have a vision of what I wanted to create. The term “Women’s Group” is vague – and, there are probably a multitude of “Women’s Groups” that can be benefi cial. However, the only group that I can take the effort to organize is one that beckons my heart and soul. One of my motivations for starting and facilitating this type of group is that for a variety of reasons, the people whom I had the type of meaningful connections I value are gone. Sometimes people die, but more often people move so far away that the friendship just fades away. And friendships are like plants – give them total neglect, and they will die. Probably, my most important goal in forming a “Women’s Group” is to create a safe, environment that makes it possible to develop meaningful friendships that can endure over time. I miss those friendships. For those of us who cannot (or don’t want to) lean totally on our children or spouse (if we have one), we benefi t from developing meaningful friendships with other adults who live life with integrity – people one can count on who care about us. And, if we are forced to move, learning how to start a new women’s friendship group might be a useful skill. Sources of Inspiration: Besides the friendships that were “like family” that I had over the years, I was more recently inspired by a book recommended by a minister to whom I was griping to about the “lack of connection” amongst the people I saw every week. He suggested the book, The Saving Graces. The book is not about religion, but of friendship amongst a group fi ve women in Washington, D.C. I read it three years ago, but I have never forgotten the book and seek to help create that wonderful caring environment of love and friendship that I know is possible. Open Introductory Meeting – Monday, August 20 –Meeting begins promptly at 6 PM @ Waterloo Icehouse @ 2222 & 360. I will arrive at 5:30 & be available to visit with anyone informally before the meeting. The private room has been reserved & there are great prices on happy hour drinks ($2 Margaritas, Specialty Martinis & beer) & special appetizer prices). RSVP preferred. For questions and input, contact Arlette at 372-9875 or email [email protected].

HILL KINDERGARTEN PLAYGROUP

Will your child be attending kindergarten at Hill Elementary in the Fall? I’m starting a neighborhood kindergarten playgroup and would love to have you join us. I think it will be a wonderful way for the kids to get a head start on meeting some school friends! My plan is to arrange some simple play dates at the playground and/or pool on a regular basis so our children can forge some friendships well before those fi rst day jitters get in the way. Please contact me (Amy Kulik) at [email protected] or 502-1976.
