HUNTOur annual Easter Egg Hunt was a
hugesuccess!Manyexcitedchildren(andgrandchildren!)ofJesterresidentsgatheredat Jester Club in anticipation of findingeggsfilledwithcandyandsurprises.Theirfaces lit up as they got to meet and gettheirpicturestakenwiththeEasterBunnyhimself!Childrenofallagesenjoyedmanygamesandactivities.Probablythebiggesthitwasthepettingzoo,wherethekiddoswereactuallyabletoholdandcuddlemanyof the little animals. It was a morningenjoyedbyadultsandchildrenalike,andweweretrulyblessedbyabeautifuldayinallrespects.

Withspringoftencomestheneedtofertilizeyouryard.RememberthatmostofJesterhasverythinsoilsbefore itbecomes limestone. Ifyoumust fertilize,pleaseconsiderusinganorganicfertilizersuchasdillodirtorcompost.Thesetendtostayonthegroundand last a long time. Chemical fertilizers tend toliquefywhentheycomeincontactwithwaterandcanbeinourcreeksandstreamswithin72hoursafterarain.OurBullCreekwatershedisstillexperiencingincreasinglevelsofnitrates,90%ofwhichcomesfromchemical fertilizer runoff. Drowning is the leadingcause of unintentional

“Psoriasisisanautoimmunedisease,”saidDr.SylviaHsu,professorofdermatologyatBCM.
“Inabout10percentofcasesthedisorderwillaffectthejoints,aconditionknownaspsoriaticarthritis.”
Hsusaidthefirstsymptomofpsoriasisisusuallyanitchyrash,causedbyanoverproductionofskincells.Itmostcommonlyaffectsthe scalp, elbows and knees.The rash can heal and come backthroughoutaperson’slife.
Joint problems usually don’t appear at the same time as skinproblems, and in most cases they aren’t severe, Hsu said. Manypeoplemayfindtheyarestiff inthemorningorbecomeachyasthedaygoeson.
Treatment for the two symptoms canbe given separately by adermatologistorarheumatologist.Aformoftreatmentknownasbiologictherapycanbeusedtotreatboth.Itcanbegiventhroughinjectionandworksbytargetingthespecificimmunepathwaysthatcauseinflammationontheskinandinthejoints.

Studieshaveshownthatpolypssmallerthan6mmarefrequentlymissedbyCTscanning,Qureshisaid.Forsomeonewhoisathighrisk for colon cancer, missing a polyp can be deadly. Almost allinstancesofcoloncancerbeginaspolyps,whichareeasilydetectedandremovedduringacolonoscopy.

Whatmakesnosoundandcannotsee?Oftenlivesfordecades,butseldommovesfromasecurespot?Causingastir,makinguspondertheirfutureaswellasourown?Theanswertothisriddleisfreshwatermussels!Nearlythreehundredspeciesofnativefreshwatermussels(alsocalledunionids)liveintheUnitedStates,withmorethan50ofthemfoundinTexas.Yetnearly70%oftheknownspeciesareextinct,endangered,orinneedofspecialprotection,largelyduetothechangesthathaveoccurredintheirecosysteminthelast200years. Living buried in the sand and gravel atthe bottom of river and streams, with a fewadaptedtothequietwatersoflakesandponds,freshwatermusselsarefilterfeeders.Theydrawtheirfoodtothembysiphoningwaterintotheirshellsandusingtheirgillstofilteroutalgaeand small particles from the waterand to take in oxygen. Althoughfreshwatermusselshaveamuscular‘foot’,theydon’tmoveverymuchbutusethisfoottoburrowintothemudorprovidelimitedtravelifdisturbedbydroughtsorfloods. Freshwatermusselsareprotectedfrompredatorsbyahard,calcium-basedshellconsistingof twohalves joinedbyahinge.Thin-shelledspeciesliveonaverage4to10years,whilethick-shelledspeciescanlive20to40yearsormore.Withcolorfulcommonnamesincludingtermslikefloater,pocketbook,fatmucket,pimpleback,pistolgrip,andwashboard,Texasunionidswereoftennamedafteritemsthatresembledtheshapesoftheirshells,bythosewhoharvestedthemfortheirpearlsandforuseintheshell-buttonindustry.FifteenspeciesofTexasfreshwatermusselsarenowonthestatethreatenedlist,whichmeanstheyareprotectedandcannotbecollectedorkilled.ThosefoundintheColoradoRiversystemincentralTexasincludetheFalsespike(Quadrulamitchelli),Smoothpimpleback(Quadrulahoustonensis),Texas fatmucket(Lampsilis
bracteata),Texas fawnsfoot (Truncilla macrodon), and theTexaspimpleback(Quadrulapetrina). Inadditiontotheirunusualcommonnames,thesebivalvesalsohaveaveryunusualreproductivecycle.First,eggsheldinsidethefemaleneedtobefertilizedbyspermreleasedintothewaterfromanearbymale.Theresultingyoungmussels,orglochidia,areinturn
releasedbythefemaleandtemporarilyattachthemselvestoafish’sfinsorgills.Thissoundsliketrickybusiness,anditis!
Femalemusselshaveevolvedtoattractcertainspeciesofhostfishbyusinginsect,wormandfish-shaped
lures–tissue-basedextensionsoftheirbodies–developedtobringthefishincloseenoughforthedispersedglochidiatoattach.Duringthisharmlessparasiticstage, the glochidia grow into tinymusselsandwithinafewweeksdropfromthefishanddowntotheriverbottomorstreambedtomatureand
continuethecycle. Sadly, there are many reasons for the
decline of freshwater mussel populations inTexas,andmostofthemareman-made.Changesinthe
naturalflowofriversandstreamsduetodamsandlakeconstruction,increaseddepositionofsiltduetorunoffcausedbytheclearingofindigenousvegetation, introductionofaquaticcontaminantsandexoticplantspecies,andthelackofnativefishhostsareafewofthosereasonscontributingtothedecline. Freshwatermusselsareanimportantindicatorofthevitalityofouraquaticecosystems. Healthypopulationswouldreflectmorepure,cleanwaterforhumansaswellasmanyotheraquaticplantsandanimals!
