WHO CAN RETELL? 5748The line for the title of this article comesfrom my favorite Chanukah song: "Whocan retell the things that befell us, whocan count them? In every age a hero orsage came to our aid."

FROM THE EDUCATOR'S CORNER...."Which Memories Linger on...?"

Seeing children and parents dancing at arecent Oneg after a lovely Family ShabbatService led me to think about the kinds ofof things our children will rememberabout growing up as Jews in NorthernVirginia and at Rodef Shalom. Whichmemories and experiences will linger on?

Some remember information andattitudes, taking an intellectual approachto Judaism, as do many of the adults Imeet. These are the people who identifywith basic beliefs or social justice issues, with our history or the meaning of aprayer. These will be the individuals whoare able to tell others why we celebrate orwhat we believe. They will, for example, appreciate the ideas of rededication andfreedom as they celebrate the festival ofChanukah.

Many will relate to the sights, sounds andsmells of the holiday, to the warmth offamily and friends visiting and celebratingtogether, to the giving and receiving ofgifts and to the singing of favoriteChanukah songs.

The most fortunate of our youngsters arethose who have the legacy of both theintellectual and the experiential aspects ofbeing Jewish. We are fortunate to be ableto provide both in our Temple and in ourhomes. We adults need to help ouryoungsters take advantage of the manyJewish opportunities available. Our December 18th service will be one ofthose occasions which combine thecerebral and the social aspects of beingJewish. Do come to worship andcelebrate our 25th anniversary ShabbatChanukah with the entire family.

Happy Chanukah!

Keep in mind now that winter weather ishere....School closing in inclement weather willbe reported on local radio stations WMAL(630), WRC (980), and WTOP (1500).Whenever possible, a recorded messagewill be available on 532 .2217 and 532.2207 announcing cancellation.

In an effort to keep parents well informedregarding their children's religiouseducation, we will continue the tradition ofprevious years of presenting profiles ofthe men and women of our religiousschool staff. This month, and for the nexttwo months, we will concentrate on thisyear's new teachers.

Jacqueline Tattenbaum - 9th gradeJacqueline grew up on the East Coast. She graduated last spring from ColumbiaUniversity with a History degree.Jacqueline has been involved in anumber of trips to Israel. Originally shevisited Israel as a NFTY (NationalFederation of Temple Youth) memberand then as a college student she had theimpressive honor of a free trip to Israel forwinning the Reform Movement essaycontest. Her topic was "The Future of theReform Movement in Israel." During thissummer visit, Jacqueline was able tospend five weeks on a kibbutz, along withadditional travel to other areas. Anothertrip to Israel, lasting six months, wasduring her junior year of college, whenshe studied Jewish and Israeli history andHebrew at Hebrew University. Her mostrecent trip was working for NFTY for sixweeks.

Jacqueline came to the Washington, D.C.area for employment with the ReligiousAction Committee as a staff member. Hermajor focus at the Committee is onwomen's issues and church/state issues.

In the 9th grade the first half of the yearfocuses on Modern Israel. Jacqueline isconcentrating on modern Zionism fromHertzel to the present. The second half ofthe year the 9th grade fo'uses on SocialAction. During this time Jacqueline plansto discuss the important question - "whyshould we be involved and concernedwith social action?" and then proceed toexplore various social action areas suchas hunger and the homeless, SovietJewry. family issues, the arms race andEthiopian Jews. Jacqueline says shewants to get the kids excited and turned

on to" the 9th grade curriculum areas. With Jacqueline's combination of ahistory background, extensive Israel traveland social action profession, she seemsquite qualified to do just that

Paul Salvetz - 7th gradePaul grew up in a suburb of Boston untilhigh school when the family moved toNew Hampshire. He attended DrewUniversity in New Jersey where he was aHistory major. Paul has had extensivetravel to Israel. He speaks of how he is"really interested in Israel" and how hehas an "attraction" to it. He likes thesense of nationality there and finds it a

Page 3: Jemple &ocSe/ 8/lalom aulie liii - Temple Rodef Shalom

place where he can identify with hisJudaism in a special way. Paul's first tripwas a six week tour during high schooland his second was as a college juniorstudying a general curriculum for sixmonths. Especially unique have been twoIsrael trips to work as a photographer atthe archaeological excavation atCaesarea.Paul is employed as an administrator at acommercial photography lab. His realinterest, though, is in internationalrelations and in a few years Paul hopes toattend graduate school in that area.In the 7th grade the curriculumconcentrates on three areas: Jewishhistory . late Middle Ages to the present, current events and numerous special areaprojects. The current project is tzedakahoriented where the students will hold abakesale (Nov. 22, for all you sweettooths! Please support them!) All of theproceeds go to a needy organization.Other projects include learning how 7thgrade Israeli students live and presentinga Chanukah Folk Arts Festival to our K-5th graders.Paul's interest is evident as he talks aboutthe value of teaching religious school. Heis especially interested in making Jewishhistory relevant to his students and as anopportunity to help them learn humanvalues lessons. Paul's love of history willgo a long way in helping spark his 7thgrader's interest.
