I want to take this opportunity to thank our President; our Ritual Committee; our officers and our Board; and all the volunteers who will be taking on many more synagogue responsibilities so that Rodef Sholom Temple will be able to continue to provide a full complement of spiritual and communal services during my absence. And, of course, I want to thank our amazing staff. They are also going to be carrying a significantly greater load during this time. The fact that Rodef Sholom Temple is able to do this as a team is truly wonderful and should rightfully make all of us very proud! The idea of sabbaticals (or mini- sabbaticals) is founded on the Biblical concept of the Sabbatical Year. In fact, there are several types of Sabbaticals mentioned in the Bible - each with a purpose related to our goal of striving for communal holiness; each based on ceasing regular activity for a period of time with the intention of resuming activity refreshed and invigorated. The Biblical Sabbatical of the Land (Exodus Chapter 23; Leviticus Chapter 25) was designed to protect the productivity of the Land; to deepen our sense of God’s presence in the world; and to remind us of the significance of our connections with one another, as we share our resources more equally during the Sabbatical year. The Biblical Sabbatical of the Land was augmented by the concept of the Biblical Sabbatical of debts in the seventh year (Deuteronomy Chapter 15). Sadly, economic reality did not support the full implementation of the Biblical Sabbatical of debts. Lenders cut back on lending for fear of losing their investments. The situation created was clearly antithetical to the spirit of the Torah’s teaching about forgiveness of debts – a teaching that intended to encourage both borrowing and lending. Seeing the emerging reality, the Sages formulated a rabbinic pathway to ensure that lenders could in fact still expect to be repaid, even during and after the Sabbatical year! These steps were intended to guide us closer and closer to the Torah’s ideal of enhanced productivity accompanied by greater financial stability for all. I, for one, wonder what steps they would suggest for us today…. The various teachings about the Sabbatical Year remind us of the power of stepping out of our regular sphere of activity for a set period of time. For, when we come back, we are likely to have renewed insight, creativity, and strength, as we enter a new stretch of life! I look forward to my mini-Sabbatical, and I look forward to returning to Rodef Sholom Temple and to a community that has not only maintained its uniqueness and quality, but has also grown and blossomed! Sabbatical Wishes

Dear Friends,

It has been eight years since my first mini-sabbatical at Rodef Sholom Temple. And, as you probably know, I will be on mini-sabbatical this year from February 5th until May 22nd. I want to take this opportunity to thank our President; our Ritual Committee; our officers and our Board; and all the volunteers who will be taking on many more synagogue responsibilities so that Rodef Sholom Temple will be able to continue to provide a full complement of spiritual

and communal services during my absence. And, of course, I want to thank our amazing staff. They are also going to be carrying a significantly greater load during this time. The fact that Rodef Sholom Temple is able to do this as a team is truly wonderful and should rightfully make all of us very proud!

The idea of sabbaticals (or mini-sabbaticals) is founded on the Biblical concept of the Sabbatical Year.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy Chanukah and a happy 2017!

The 4th and 5th grade class finished its first unit on Jewish values and recently began a unit on Israel. The introductory lesson included making a kosher edible topographic map of Israel. Blue tortilla chips were water. Salty potato chips stacked on blue chips represented the Dead Sea. The long red twizzler near Eilat represented the Red Sea. Mini-Triscuits stacked highto make the Kotel. In the spring, this class will begin a new unit on Jewish Lifecycle events. On April 23rd, there will be a Family Education Mock Wedding for the whole school. The parents will have a parallel break-out session until the actual Mock Wedding begins.

November - December 2016

President’s Message

Happy winter! The subject for this month’s column is food groups. Bart Simpson, from the Simpsons cartoon, claimed that there was a Butterfingers candy bar food group. I’m not totally sure that’s correct, however I am 100% sure that there is a latke food group, and it’s my favorite food group of all. Hanukkah is one of my favorite holidays (did I mention that I liked latkes?) I hope that you and your family had a terrific Hanukkah celebration!

We’ve had a busy fall in the B’Nai Mitzvah category, and I’d like to say again Mazel Tov to the Epstein, Kluger and Hinnant families for the wonderful Bar and Bat Mitzvahs that took place at RST. I continue to be amazed at the talent that our teens possess, and I hope that they continue to be an integral part of our community. I also want to mention a couple of other longer-range projects that are occurring at RST:

Our building construction plans were submitted to the City of Newport News in Dec. for permit review; our site plan has also been reviewed and city comments were addressed. The UJC Board took a very important vote at their Nov. 30 meeting, solidifying construction on the UJC campus; read more about our relocation efforts in the relocation update elsewhere in The Messenger. Your board has also begun a mission/vision exercise, with the help of staff from the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ). This endeavor will hopefully lead to a mission and vision for RST that we can all embrace and take us into the future. Development will evolve over the next 6 months or so – I’ll keep you posted on our progress.

In November, I was also fortunate to attend a community-building retreat, hosted by the UJC, and facilitated by Rabbi Phil Warmflash, a well-known facilitator in this arena from the Philadelphia area. The purpose of the retreat was to include members from all 5 of the synagogues on the Peninsula as well as UJC leadership to discuss how we can come together and grow as a community, irrespective of whether a synagogue is on the campus or not. A by-product of this off-site retreat (we went to the Wakefield 4-H Conference Center after Havdallah services on Shabbat and returned on Sunday evening) was also getting to know members of other synagogues; we even had some team-building exercises in the outdoors. Kudos to the UJC leadership for creating this opportunity, and I think it will bear great fruit as we grow as a community.I look forward to seeing everyone at Friday and Saturday Shabbat services!

RST Sisterhood

As 2017 begins, Sisterhood’s Coordinating Committee thanks the entire congregation for its support this year. Even without a building, your Sisterhood continues to support the synagogue in many ways, including providing our Oneg Shabbat receptions and kiddush luncheons, as well as presenting all of our b’nai mitzvah with a beautiful kiddush cup on the weekend of their bar or bat mitzvah. We also provide the bimah flowers weekin and week out, with the help of your generous donations, and we support the congregation’s general budget as well.

In the new year, we look forward to our annual Sisterhood Shabbat on Friday, January 27th, which will include dinner after services. Our book group continues under the leadership of Elina Blaha, and she is working with me on our annual Torah Fund brunch on February 26th that will also be our regular book group meeting. That morning we’ll welcome Rabbi Ilene Schneider, who was one of the first six female rabbis in the United States. Rabbi Schneider will tell us about her decision to become a rabbi and we’ll also discuss her first Rabbi Aviva Cohen mystery, Chanukah Guilt. She’s also written two more mysteries, Unleavened Dead and, just out, Yom Killer. She’s also written a non-fiction book, Talk Dirty Yiddish. Chanukah Guilt is available both in print and as an e-book from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. If you can help with making phone calls, or with brunch, please let me know. More details on this meeting will be forthcoming!

In March we’ll have our annual Mishloach Manot project for Purim, chaired by Jody Sarfan. Watch for information in the coming weeks about how you can send Purim greetings to everyone in our congregation. If you’re not yet a member of Sisterhood, it’s not too late to join! Your dues--just $36--helps makes this all possible, and also supports Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. WLCJ offers a wealth of resources and you can find out more by going to www.wlcj.org. Your dues are tax-deductible and will help Rodef Sholom Sisterhood--one of the oldest Sisterhoods in Seaboard Region--continue to be an important source of support for the congregation and the community.

We welcome your participation and hope to see you soon at a Sisterhood event! And best wishes for a happy and healthy 2017!

RELOCATION UPDATE: JANUARY 1, 2017

Campus Concept moves closer to reality: With an affirmative vote by the UJC Board of Directors in December, Rodef Sholom’s permanent home on the City Center Boulevard campus moves another step closer to reality. The vote to help fund site work infrastructure and other elements benefitting the community is necessary to support the future growth of the campus. A few years ago, the UJC decided to spend a portion of the VDOT money to try to make the campus concept a reality. This vote is a step towards that vision. We should all feel good that Rodef Sholom is leading, preparing to construct a 14,500 square foot facility adjoining the UJC. Plans are also under consideration by Adath Jeshurun and Congregation Emet V’Or (CEVO) to build on the campus; and the UJC is exploring the possibility of a community Mikvah.

Our architect, Levin/Brown & Associates, has now produced permit construction drawings. Those drawings have been put out for subcontractor bidding by W.M. Jordan Company, and have been submitted to the City of Newport News for approval.

In the meantime, our Interior Design committee, under the chairmanship of Robin Levy, continues to explore options for flooring, lighting and furniture.

IF YOU HAVE NOT YET MADE YOUR DONATION TO OUR RELOCATION, PLEASE CONTACT GARY NACHMAN, FUNDRAISING CHAIR, OR JENNY DAVID, CO-CHAIR.

Religious School students enjoy playing an RST-exclusive quiz game called “Cash Camel” modeled after the television quiz show “Cash Cab.” Correct answers earn tzedakah for the school’s tzedakah projects. This year the students voted to send all their tzedakah to Project Phoenix to help Israel rebuild after the fires.

Funding for Educational Scholarships, Camps, Youth Study and Travel in Israel Available Through RST

Jewish camps: Rodef Sholom Temple offers financial support through several synagogue funds to enable the children of member families to attend Jewish camps and study or travel in Israel. Each year, the Temple’sEndowment Fund provides monies to the general budget for the express purpose of helping to send young people to Israel and Jewish summer camps on approved programs. For pre-Confirmation children, a committee, in consultation with Rabbi, will review programs or camps that are not Ramah or USY. Capital Camps has been approved. Subventions for Israel programs are available to young people in the congregation who have been confirmed and will be returning to the Peninsula for the academic year following their program in Israel. Generally, participants are required to assist in conducting services both before and after their trip and to write an article for the Messenger upon their return describing their Israel experience (alternative requirements can be arranged). Interested applicants should send a written request by e-mail or on paper to the President of Rodef Sholom, describing the program and the fees charged. Links to websites are helpful. Deadline for this year’s application for either of the above is February 20, 2017. In addition to subsidies offered directly by the Temple, these RST family funds offer financial support: The Bernice Slavin Gordon Grant for Continuing Education offers funding to the children of RST members from Confirmation through age 22 (or older if engaged in a graduate Jewish studies curriculum). Qualifying programs may include, but are not limited to, high school and/or college semesters in Israel, educational seminars or programs in Israel, Jewish studies programs, Jewish educational summer camps, or participation in extraordinary youth group activities. The Boris and Selma Margolin Israel Experience Fund was established to promote the development of a strong attachment on the part of young members of our congregation to the homeland of the Jewish people through approved study and travel programs in Israel. The subsidy consists of a one-time grant of $500 to young people who are sophomores in high school through age 25. The applicant’s family must be members in good standing of Rodef Sholom Temple (RST). Upon their return from Israel, grant recipients will be required to present a program based on their experiences in Israel to classes at RST’s Religious School. The Dina & Leon Familant Memorial Scholarship Fund will pay the tuition cost up to a maximum of $2,000 per school year to an accredited college or university on behalf of a needy applicant of the Jewish community with priority given to qualified students whose parents are RST members. Inquiries should be directed to Harold Familant c/o Rodef Sholom Temple. All of these funding opportunities are available to the children of RST members in good standing. Prospective applicants should also inquire with the United Jewish Community about additional funding opportunities there.

The Eric and Jack Luckman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 and is in memory of Eric and Jack, who loved working with children and children’s sports teams. Distributions from the fund are to provide scholarships for youth to attend accredited Jewish overnight or day camps or for travel to Israel. Both the camps and Israel programs should include a component of Jewish education.

The 2nd and 3rd grade religious school students decorated the school wing for Chanukah. The religious school has settled comfortably into the rented facili-ties at Temple Sinai on Sundays. The stu-dents pray in the sanctuary and then take classes in the school wing downstairs. The rented space also includes an office sufficiently large to hold adult education sessions and book club meetings while school is in session.
