President's Message...

We at Temple Rodef Shalom have taken a rather remarkable journey over the last year - a journey into a new era, guided and inspired by the past, excited and encouraged by the future. In preparing for this journey, your TRS Board ofDirectors, in a day-long working session in June 1998, selected five "goals" that have served as our roadmaps. Thesegoals say a lot about how we define ourselves as a congregation, and about whom we want to be as we continue togrow and prosper. None is itself a final destination, but rather, each represents an on-going effort to draw closer to the"sacred TRS community" so eloquently defined by Senior Rabbi Amy Schwartzman ... the treasured Jewish house ofworship, study, and assembly towards which our shared journey leads.

As we near the end of our 1998 - 1999 program year, I would like to review just a few of the "mile markers" by whichwe have measured our journey in the past months. These are YOUR achievements - the product of YOUR hard workand dedication - take pride in how far we have come!

Integrate different constituencies within the Temple community (youth, singles, empty nesters, non-Jews, specialneeds, etc.). Our Havurot - extended family/small communities within our larger communities - are strong andgrowing. Five new ones have been formed since last year, and additional Havurot (for singles, those interested incultural enrichment, and young marrieds) are under consideration. A number of support groups ("Women inTransition," Jewish widows and widowers, CareGivers) have been established. The Intermarried Couples Discus-sion Group meets monthly as a forum for member needs and concerns. Our working members can now gather intwo different locations - downtown Washington and Northern Virginia - for weekday discussions on contempo-rary Jewish issues. Our Vatikim seniors have been busy with a full range of engaging programs. Our temple youthgroups, under the dynamic leadership of Suzanne Saunders, have been re-energized in every age category, and ourSenicr Youth Group has even chosen a new name - "TRSTY" - Temple Rodef Shalom Temple Youth!!

2. Successfully integrate the new clergy. We actually "integrated" five "new" clergy this year - surely a record forANY temple! Our beloved former Senior Rabbi Laszlo Berkowits moved into his new position as TRS's first-ever"Emeritus," while our esteemed former Associate Rabbi, Amy Schwartzman, began her new role as Senior Rabbi -and then, on April 20, her new role as "Mother!" Musically, we were greatly enriched during our first year withour new Cantor, Michael Shochet. The harmonious sounds of new prayer melodies, a series of special concerts, our"Koleinu" congregational choir, and our terrific new "Chai Notes" band fill the air. Our 1998-99 "Adjunct Rabbi"David Kessel was an honored co-officiator on our pulpit as he led Shabbat services and three series of thoughtfuladult education classes. And finally, those of you who attended the Spring Congregational Meeting on May 2voted unanimously - proudly and happily - to complete our clergy team with the addition of Rabbi MarcusBurstein as our new Assistant Rabbi, beginning July 1. Welcome, Rabbi Burstein - we look forward to having youjoin the TRS Family!

3. Cope with changes to the physical plant. Our "coping" has been reflected primarily in the much-appreciatedpatience and trust that you, our congregants, have shown during a frustrating and costly series of delays inconstruction on our building expansion/ renovation. The good news is that we are now closer than ever - asummer start is predicted. We have carefully considered which on-going temple activities and events will requirealternate arrangements during the construction period, so that we can carry on "business as usual" even inunusual circumstances. For the last few months, the Religious Practices Committee, in close cooperation withTemple Administrator Judy Seiff, has been carefully planning our move to the splendid surroundings of theWestfield Conference Center (near Dulles Airport) for our 1999 High Holy Day observances. Stay tuned for moredetails. Meanwhile, to all those of you who have endured "squeezed" facilities, missed opportunities to use ourbuilding for your life-cycle events, or confusion about what has been or will be happening in the absence of anydifferences that you can actually SEE right now in our current building (except for that impressive contractor'ssign in the front and that large trailer in the back!), please know how grateful we are for your understanding. Weare looking forward to a magnificent new addition - not as soon as we had hoped, but getting closer every day.

4. Nurture volunteers. Our festive "Volunteer Opportunity Fair" November 1 gave our program committees a chanceto creatively promote themselves as they facilitated matches between their many dynamic, successful activities(which need people to implement them), and TRS members, who are looking for ways to help build our "sacredcommunity." Similarly, Mitzvah Day in April provided many wonderful ways for us to fulfill our Jewish missionof "tikun olam" ("repair of the world") through helping to build the larger community around us. A wonderful by-product of both events: deepening our friendships with and connections to our fellow congregants, while making

President's Message (Cont.)us prouder than ever of the wonderful work that we do here. We are trying to improve the way we link newmembers with activities related to your interests as you have expressed them on "new member" applications. Weare also looking for better ways to link our "veteran" members to a growing variety of program opportunities thatwill refresh and renew your excitement about being here. "TRS Reader's Theater Group," anyone? We have onenow, and are eagerly anticipating its first performance. We are studying ways to expand and strengthen ourrecognition processes, so that many, many of you who devote hours of time, care, and expertise to TRS projects maybe appropriately identified and thanked. Of course, none of us should EVER miss a chance to say "Thank You" toanyone and everyone who contributes so much - so please, start the round of applause with cheers for yourOfficers, Trustees, and Board of Directors, whose leadership, dedication, and generosity of time are true gifts to allof us.

5. Foster effective communications within the Temple community. Look at our ever-expanding Temple Bulletin (inyour hands right now!)— bigger and better than ever, with terrific new features such as the "Living and Learning"guide to educational and cultural opportunities; "Volunteer Job Bank"; and "Meet the Board Members," "B'naiMitzvah," and "Scrapbook" photos - our family album! Our website (http://www.uahc.org/congs/va/va005),under the "Webmastery" of Adam Gruen, is attractive and informative to readers both within and outside of ourcongregation. Our e-mail "listserv" brings smiles and news to "on-line" TRS'ers. Our "Jewish Legacy" videohighlights the thoughts, feelings, and memories of many of our congregants; through their stories, they create amoving and very precious portrait of the individuals who have joined together to create our IRS community.Brighter and more colorful signs in our lobby, more eye-catching mailings, a lovely new Yahrzeit reminder letter, and more artfully constructed bulletin boards have appeared. A redesigned Shabbat program featuring ourbeautiful Torah scrolls provides a lovely welcome to those entering our sanctuary, and on Saturday mornings, amuch-appreciated description of the meaning of Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies for visitors who are not familiarwith these ritual observances. All of these new ways to "tell our story" are, in fact, helping day by day to make thatstory more compelling.

As you can see, it really HAS been a remarkable year. But we still have so much we can accomplish, and EACH OFYOU is needed and valued as we continue on our journey. Thank you for all you have done, and all that you will do. Ilook forward to traveling with you, as together we move forward into the coming year. 4My best and B' shalom,

Ellen BlalockPresident

With joy and gratitude we share with you the birth of our daughter

Hannah Miriam Moss

Hannah was born on April 20,1999; she was 21 inches long and weighed 8 lbs.1 oz. As many of you know, we had a rough beginning, with Hannah in thehospital for her first two weeks. Things are great now - thanks to all your goodwishes and prayers. We are grateful for all the cards and messages we re-

ceived. During our difficult first few weeks we truly felt supported and loved by the Templecommunity. The congregation is welcome to join us on Friday night, June 18th, when Hannahwill be named.

Re/4'j/ou5 Sc/i oo/From the Educator... School Notes

I

I

Recently, I was a participant in a communityforum sponsored by the Jewish Federation ofGreater Washington. The meeting was a follow-up to the grant meeting held in November - thegrant process that gave us the money to improveour teacher training. The focus of the meetingwas evaluation. We were gathered together toidentify the importance of evaluation and tobegin to evaluate the Federation program that iscurrently in place for these grants. Our guestspeaker, Leora Isaacs, of the Mandell L BermanJewish Heritage Center for Research andEvaluation on Jewish Education began theprogram by listing the positive impact of theJewish community in Washington. Sometimes inthe middle of the action, I think we forget exactlyhow wonderful the community is. She remindedus that the Greater Washington Community wasa forerunner in Special Education, FamilyEducation, and Israel Quest. Now, we are theleading community in forging honest and opencollaborative working relationships between thesynagogues, Federation, and the Board of JewishEducation. We have, as a community, shiftedour focus to Congregational life-long learning forall of our congregants. We recognize theimportance of Jewish Education for one and all.

It was a proud moment for all of us in the roomto be recognized by a person who, by virtue ofwho she is and what she does, has clearly beenin the midst of many, many communities. As Ilistened, I was also quick to realize that of all thecongregations in the room, Rodef Shalom isamong the leaders in this leading community. For many years, long before my arrival, we wererepresented around most of the communitytables. Our presence put Northern Virginia onthe map and the vision of this congregation'sleadership enabled us to get out there and dareto do what has never been done.

Now, as one school year comes to an end andthe next one goes into planning, I look forwardto the work we will

do together. We will dare todo what needs to be done to keep our school onthe cutting edge of Jewish education!

Bits and Pieces

As another successful program year moves intothe "summer mode" there are several items toshare with our TRS community.

We will be up and running with our own website(www.TempleRodefShalom.org) in the near future. Our domain name has been reserved and in thecoming weeks we will be working to developlinks between our UAHC site and our ownindependent site. Stay tuned for changes whichwill be announced in the summer bulletin. Weanticipate some change in our e-mail addressestoo. Don't despair! The changes will be an-nounced and will come gradually.

Bills for the first quarter of the fiscal year will bemailed in late June. At the Spring CongregationalMeeting the budget was approved. This includeda 5% dues increase. Each Spring we ask that youreview your fair share assessment. If your circum-stances have changed, this is the time to adjustyour dues level. Often members join and committo a level that is appropriate when they first moveinto the community or begin their careers. Take amoment to see whether you have made appropri-ate increases over the years as your circumstanceshave improved. Of course, if the opposite is true,we want to work with you to reduce financialburdens. While we are totally dependent uponthe generous spirit of each member of the TRScommunity, no one is denied the privilege ofmembership if they are experiencing financialhardship. Please contact me at 532-2240 for duesrelated issues.

We remind you that members must be current intheir dues, building, and maintenance assess-ments in order to enroll children in the ReligiousSchool and to receive tickets for the High HolyDays.

While the pace of life tends to change for manyduring the summer months, the Temple Office isbusy. We are planning for next year at TRS. Docall with questions and stop by to see the progressas construction on our new building begins.

B'Shalom,Judy Seiff, Temple Administrator

THE ISABEL MALAKIEMUSIC AND ART CENTER

April Pajama Party a Success!!!

The Isabel Malakie Music and Art Centermoved $5000 closer to our goal of $100,000 inApril, due to the generous efforts of the NurserySchool community. On April 8 111, TRS NurserySchool brought back the pajama party - a funfamily evening when the kids come dressed forbed to enjoy an evening of entertainment, desserts, and prizes. This year's event hadspecial meaning as all proceeds were donatedto the Isabel Malakie Music and Art Center. Aspirited evening of entertainment was a fittingway to remember this wonderful teacher's loveof children and music, while generatingdonations for a worthy investment in thesechildren's nursery school education.

It was especially heartening to see the level ofcommunity spirit poured into this great project. Many generous nursery school families donateditems to their class raffle baskets, which werethen assembled by very creative parentvolunteers into themed baskets for the raffle.Families also donated many individual itemsand services for the raffle - such as dinners, baseball tickets, scuba diving lessons, and evena small airplane tour of the area. Tablesoverflowed with wonderful desserts andhealthy snacks for everyone to enjoy.Percussion Discussion provided entertainment, while children were delighted to see many oftheir nursery school teachers in theirnightgowns selling tickets and helping out forthe evening! Last but not least, Cantor Shockelserved as the Master of Ceremonies for theexciting raffle drawing at the conclusion of theevening. Thanks to everyone, the event was ahuge success and most enjoyable for everyonetall and small.

As always, if you have any questions about theCenter, or would like to help or make adonation, contact Debbie Winter at 352-2782,or Debbie Levin Jardot at 356-9147.

Rabbi Burstein Cont.

As a final word about our new rabbi, I'd like tocommend the search committee, led by BarryHolt and Ellen Salsbury, for their excellentwork. It was a pleasure to go through theprocess with all of the members. I'd also like topublicly thank Cantor Shochet who stood in forme during my maternity leave to ensure thatthe process went smoothly.

Many thanks to all and welcome to RabbiBurstein.

AN AGE OF MEDICAL MIRACLES

We live in an age of medical miracles. In ourlocal hospitals, members of our congregationperform life saving operations daily with bypasssurgery and organ transplants.

However, the number of people waiting for akidney for example far exceeds the availabledonors. In the meantime, candidates fortransplants wait and hope. As many of youknow my wife, Judy, is a candidate for a kidneytransplant. She is waiting in line as are manyothers. However, if someone would donate akidney matching her blood type, the operationcould proceed almost immediately. The entirecost of the surgery is totally covered by therecipient's health coverage and/or Medicare.

I share these lines with you not to pressureanyone, but in the hope that there might besomeone in our congregational community whowould consider offering such a lifesaving gift. Our sages taught: "He who saves one life isconsidered as if he had saved the wholeworld."

Blalock FundSupports Youth

The Jennifer Blalock Youth Activities Fund, established as an endowment fund in memoryof Jennifer Blalock, was active in supportingour youth this past year.

In keeping with the goal of encouraging andsupporting our teenagers to participate inReform youth programming, this fund sentstudents to NFTY-MAR's (National Federationof Temple Youth - Mid-Atlantic Region) Lead-ership Development Institute, regional con-claves, and NFI'Y's Kutz Camp.

Each year the income from this fund is distrib-uted to the Temple so that we may support ouryoung people's involvement in NFTY and otherJewish youth programs and experiences.Consider giving a gift that keeps on giving bysupporting the Jennifer Blalock Fund.
