Only on rare occasions in the
history of universal art has there
been such a symbiosis between acreative artist and his native soil.
It would take going back to
Periclean Athens, the Florence of
the Renaissance or Rome during
the Baroque age to find parallels.
In more recent times in Spain,
Csar Manrique can only becompared, from this standpoint,
with Antonio Gaud and his
Barcelona. A son of Lanzarote,
Csar should nonetheless also be
thought of as the islands parent.
Indeed, just as Athena Pallias
(protectress of Athens) sprangfrom Zeus forehead, todays
Lanzarote might be said to have
sprung from Csar Manriques
mind (and heart and hands).
His life was cut short at the
height of his creative genius, but

all he had done until then
identified his name closely with
Lanzarote. Not even the familiar
to death do us part was able toend Csars love affair with
Lanzarote, a paradigm of
indestructible unity. Because while
the island provided the mother
earth, Csars was the paternal,
passionate, virile, fertile seed...
from which life blossomed, grewand prospered. Lanzarote, without
Csar, would have been the
volcanic wasteland that it was
before the artists involvement on
the island. His was an unusual
case of a prophet triumphant in his
own land, on his island, althoughnot on all the other islands of the
Canary archipelago, where his
inexhaustible fecundity sometimes
met with the closed doors closed of
apprehension and misgiving.
Lanzarotes transformation isreadily perceptible and the longer
the intervals between visits, the
more obvious are the changes. But
the question inevitably arises:
might the building involved be
abusive, overly massive? Csar
feared as much and voiced his

concern in his usual outspoken
way. But even running such
potential risks, Lanzarote owes to
him what it is today: a provocativeparadise of calm and prosperity
which would have been much more
difficult to achieve without his
talent and untiring tenacity.
Any fair and accurate
judgement of Csar Manriquesexceptional oeuvre must takeaccount, first and foremost, of the
place and the circumstances under
which it was created, since the
truth of philosopher Jos Ortega y
Gassets well-known assertion that
identifies man with hiscircumstances has rarely been so
literally upheld as in his case.
Indeed, the man-artist and his
work would certainly have been
different without Lanzarote and its
circumstances. The first
consideration to be borne in mindis the physical medium itself:
Lanzarote, of the seven major
islands comprising the Canary
archipelago, the fourth largest in
area (eight hundred sixty two
square kilometres; after Gran
Canaria, one thousand five
gegangen und mit der BebauungMibrauch getrieben? Csar hatte dieserBefrchtung schon mit seiner gewohnten
Schrfe Ausdruck verliehen.
Hartnckigkeit viel schwerer zuverwirklichen gewesen wre.

Csar no
era artista de elaborados bocetos,
A whim of Fate would have it
that Csar was to be born on that
isolated island, bounded by the
depths of the Atlantic Ocean on theone hand and the hostility of the
coastal Sahara Desert on the other.
The scholar Miguel de Unamuno
wrote We dont come into this
world, were brought into it,
meaning that no one can choose his
place of birth, which cant bechanged, but he can choose the
place he lives and even plan where
he intends to die. Csar Manrique
was a native son of Lanzarote
down to the inner-most fibre of his
being: he loved the sun, pure
nature, the roaring sea. He wasvehement, impulsive, likeable,
spontaneous, alert, skilful,
enterprising, capable of enormous
efforts when he was attracted to
something, or in true need of it,
loyal, not at all prone to intrigue,
direct in his judgements andopinions, extremely sharp... But
more than that, Csar was gifted
with something very uncommon:
extraordinarily rapid vision,
enviable intuitive power. When
Manrique took on something that
had to be done, he seldom

meditated for very long; he was
quick, spontaneous in his artistic
responses. He was not one to draw
up elaborate sketches, plans,
patient prior studies. His creative
perception enabled him to envisage
the work he intended to undertake
as though it were nearly
finished. With just a few strokes
of his firm hand he could forge
worlds of wonders that seemed torise up like magic. And in fact,
everything that Manrique built on
Lanzarote was pure magic: he
converted the sharp hostility of the
lava into his unique mansion at
Taro de Tahche; transformed a
puddle full of trash into an urbanpleasure garden; retrieved a lake-
stage and an incredible auditorium
from the depths of the earth; fil led
the dung-covered ruins of an old
castle with contemporary art;
carved an eagle nest-lookout point
out of the steep, smooth face of amountain; organised the scrap

monument to farmers; turned the
bad lands of underlying volcanic

Seineschpferische Wahrnehmung lie ihndas beabsichtigte Werk in seiner fastfertigen Ausfhrung sehen.

Csar Manrique used to like to
write down the ideas and
reflections that filled his
imagination in his sententious,
pithy style. On one of the few
occasions that he managed to do a
self-synthesis, in the Spring of
1985, he wrote: We artists are
morally and ethically obliged to
apply our talent to Life, filling our
living surroundings with harmonyand beauty, educating and
sensitising to prevent the clumsy
and systematic destruction of our
Planet. That will make our lives
worth having lived.
Few others have done so muchto fill the collective environment
with harmony and beauty. Few
others have educated and
sensitised as he did. No one was
more fortunate in living a life
worth having lived, or even
better, a life worth the joy ofhaving lived.

I was afforded the privilege of
participating in the genesis and

the last work the artist created for

friendship with Csar Manrique
date back to the days long ago
when the artist lived in Madrid,
after he finished his formal artistic
training in the San Fernando
School of Fine Arts. I was one of
the first art writers to take an
interest in his architecture-related
oeuvre, because Csar started torelate painting to architecture very
soon, although initially in the form
of pictorial murals located infoyers and vestibules in buildings in
Madrid. As a result of that
friendship, which we always
maintained, in the late sixties
Csar proposed a trip together

surviving on the island. The days
we spent on that search proved to
be exciting and fruitful: Csar,
camera always cocked and ready,
and I, note book in hand, filling
up page after page with names of
places, details and features we
observed in the buildings, their
state of repair and anything else
we felt might be of use for the task
we had set ourselves, a sort of
notarys record of what was left of
unadulterated, authentic rural
island architecture.
The outcome of that meticulous
research was a book titled
Lanzarote, arquitectura indita, the first edition of which was
published in 1974, and the second
(with my enlargements on the
text) in 1988. It is not often that a
publication is so effective among
the public at large as that one
was, with its emphasis on showing
the world the simple beauty,
functional effectiveness and
authenticity of those white
buildings. Its easy to see the
result today: nearly all new
construction in Lanzarote,
especially single family dwellings,

seeks inspiration in the models
appearing in that book.
It so happens that during the
trips we took to prepare the book,
we had necessarily to pass by what
would later become the Cactus
Garden. Even then Csar would
vehemently describe to me what he
thought that space could be used
for. What used to be there at the
time was a large hole with dirt and
rocks from an abandoned stone
quarry, and, standing out on one
of the sides of the hole and raised
over the rest of the terrain were
the white walls of an old windmill
that Manrique had managed to
have restored to operating
condition. From the mound where
the windmill still stands today,
Csar described his project for a
garden:
See those monoliths, that shoot
up out of the ground? Well, once
you remove all the stuff around
them theyll be like monumental
natural lava sculptures, fantastic
obelisks that will stand out among

Aparte
will have to be excavated to make
staggered terraces to plant the
cactus. Itll be like an
amphitheatre of plants springing
out of the rock.
Csar pointed first in one
direction, then in the other,
gesticulating and describing what
would one day be there. But he
didnt describe it all that morning:
much more of it emerged gradually
during the execution of what might
then have seemed like a dream,
and what today is there for the
looking in the Cactus Garden, to
visitors amazement: a place of
study for botanists, a surprising
retreat where the natural
aggressiveness of cactus plants is
bearable and pleasing. That is
where the artists talent is most
clearly perceptible, the same talent
that planned and organised, that
staggered the effects and enhanced
the potential of this unique
environment.
But this is not to say that the
choice of the site for the Cactus
Garden was a Manriquean whim;
rather, it was the result of existing

conditions. Besides the potential
beauty of the hollow and the
picturesque note added by the
windmill, the main justification lies
in the nature of the site itself:
Guatiza is a hamlet characterised
by its vast fields of nopal or
prickly pear, a cactus originally
imported from Mexico, that cover
most of the surrounding country
side. Although the plant is known
for its fruit, the prickly pear or
tuna, that is not what is
harvested in Guatiza. A close look
at the flat paddles that comprise
the prickly pears plant
architecture reveals small whitish
cotton-like spots. These are the
bodies of a coccid known locally as
the cochinilla (Coccus cacti is thescientific name), insects that live as
parasites on the sap of the variety
of prickly pear known as Nopaleacochenillifera; their main virtue isthat when their bodies are crushed
they produce an indelible juice or
blood of a beautifully pure tone of
red. Carminic acid, commonly used
for dyes before the advent of the
synthetic chemical variety, is
extracted from this coccid after it
is dried and ground. But the

It took a number of years of
hard work before Csar Manrique
could inaugurate his pet project,
the Cactus Garden, in 1990.
Completion and therefore
inauguration of the Garden was
delayed not only by the logical
difficulties that often arise in
unconventional undertakings, but
by other setbacks as well that
tended to have a cumulative
effect, with work being suspended
from time to time to ensure the
necessary funding or torn down
and re-built to make corrections
that Csar considered

As noted above, in
architectural projects Manrique

contingencies arising at any given
time. When doing the Cactus
Garden one of the main changes
called for tearing down the
entrance way to the area and
rebuilding it as a series of lintels
through which visitors access the
garden, around a design that
draws from Lanzarotes white
architecture. Csar realised that
more emphasis should be placed
on the entrance and didnt
hesitate for a minute when he
decided to replace the first
attempt with the present version,
which consists of a number of
flattened arch, semi-spherically
domed structures, all made out of
hand-hewn, rough grey quarry
lava. The uneven pattern of this
archway gradually prepares
visitors for the sudden surprise
that assaults them as they reach
the end: an overview of the entire
garden with its staggered
terraces, its windmill and bar-
restaurant on the left and
souvenir shop on the right, in
harmonious counterpoint.

Medieval cathedrals, where people
laboured not only for a wage, but
pervaded by the kind of
contagious faith that moved
everyone to take great pains inwhatever they did.
Csar Manrique had that
inestimable ability to convey his
own fervour to others, making the
engineers and workers feel they
were contributing to something
unique, something in which they
could all take pride. That is the
sole explanation for the lack of a
single defect, a single trace of
poor workmanship, despite the
enormity of the venture. Csar,
whose passion for the project
under way was contagious,
personalised the ideal that Amiel
(1821-1881), Swiss writer and
professor of philosophy and
aesthetics, taught his pupils to
seek: Without passion, man is no
more than latent force, like flint
before it strikes iron, awaiting the
chance to emit sparks of light.
Antonio Gaud (1852-1926),
like many a highly talented
architect, also left a bevy of

An sigue Gaud: El autntico
written texts where he set out his
thoughts on a wide range of
subjects: aesthetic, religious,
social, environmental and,
naturally, architectural. And someof his ideas on the subject of
architecture seem to have been
written with Csar Manrique in
mind (or the other way around,
might have been read by Csar,
although we think that unlikely).
Ideas that seem to be closely
related to the Cactus Garden,
such as when Gaud writes:
Everything springs from the
great book of Nature, like in the
garden, where Nature has been
only minimally and respectfully
assembled and arranged.
And Gaud continues: The
genuine architect should shun
imitation or deception of all kinds,
should be sincere to the end,
should find true expression, not
only in the materials used and the
forms adopted for the elements in
the work, but even in the proper
co-ordination of the trades
involved. These were recipes
strictly followed by Manrique who,
while not a licensed architect, did
