FRIENDS FOCUSHappy New Year from the FRIENDS BOOK STORE

We are happy to report the FRIENDS had a great year selling books. Thank you to all the volunteers and patrons that made this possible. Approximately $30,000 was raised from the combined sales at the Fairmount and Eastern Ave. Bookstores, Main Library and online sales for 2014. All proceeds will benefit the Library with much needed materials and provide free programming.

Thank you for all the wonderful donations this past year. As of January we will no longer be accepting cassettes, VHS tapes and records. We are always in need of Children’s books, please keep that in mind.

Look for special book features during January and February at both book stores.

We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.Carol Wagner, Ann Franke & Terry Strader, FRIENDS Book Store

NEWS FROM SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

New to the Digital Image ArchiveWe’ve added some new images to the Upper Mississippi Valley Digital Image Archive. There are now 34 new images from the National Corn Husking Competition Collection! These images showcase not only the contestants of the Corn Husking Com-petition but the grounds, crowds, and other activities.

The Corn Husking Competition was a major event in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s and still continues today. Local winners would travel to state competi-tions and then state winners would travel to the national event. In 1940, Davenport was lucky enough to be selected to host this exciting event and now the Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center is lucky enough to house the photographs from it!

Original Panoramic Print DonatedA recent donation of an original panoramic print has Special Collections grinning. One hundred years ago, Feb. 16, 1915, a group portrait of students from Brown’s Business College was taken by the J.B. Hostetler Studio. What makes this so special is that in a donation from the Free Studio of Photography in 1998, the original panoramic negatives of the Hostetler Studio were included. We now have in our collection a new negative that was made from the fragile origi-nal, the original negative, copy panoramic prints and finally an original sepia toned print.

This particular original measures 10 x 30” and shows the class posed on the front steps of the old Post Office dressed in their warm coats and hats, holding pennants boasting allegiance to their school! The copy print made from the original negative measures a bit longer and includes what the photographer cropped out of the original…the children standing off to the side gawking at the process and parts of the Mason’s Carriage Works building nearby.

Thanks for considering the Richardson-Sloane Spe-cial Collections Center for disposition of unique local records and photographs. We are here to provide access to these local history materials to our patrons. We might be the best kept secret of the library!

Black History Month & Women’s History MonthFebruary is Black History Month and March is Women’s History Month. We have in our collection scrapbooks from the Semper Fidelis Club, which is affiliated with the Iowa and National Association of Colored Wom-en’s Club. The Semper Fidelis Club was organized on May 15, 1958 at the home of Ms. Cecile Cooper in Davenport. The club’s motto is “Lifting as we climb”. This organization helps support and inspire women by offering scholarships, seminars and supporting com-munity programs.

TAX FORMS

AFFORDABLE CARE

The State of Iowa no longer mails out forms to citizens by default. To obtain forms, you may choose to:

• Leave message on forms order line at 1-800-532-1531 (EASIEST and FREE.) Limit of one of each form.

• Print forms yourself from www.iowa.gov/tax.

• Request a form by e-mail at [email protected]

• Make photocopies of the long or short form from the packets we will have laminated at every building.

It’s that time of year again! As the faithful paper filers know, public libraries like DPL are pretty much the only place

to find physical tax forms.

Tax forms do not come in all at once. We will put our stock on the public floor shortly after the New Year. Additionally, the IRS has slashed its availability of paper forms and instructions to mostly only those beginning with 1040. Additional federal forms can be found at www.irs.gov
