The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the oldest Christian feasts, though, throughout the centuries, it has celebrated a variety of things. Epiphany comes from a Greek verb meaning “to reveal” and all of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to man. Epiphany originally celebrated four different events: the Baptism of the Lord; Christ’s first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; the Nativity of Christ; and the visitation of the Wise Men or Magi. Each of these is a revelation of God to man: At Christ’s Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God

the Father is heard, declaring that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ’s divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him: and the visitation of the Magi, Christ’s divinity is revealed to the Gentiles-the other nations of the earth. Eventually, the celebration of the Nativity was separated out, in the West, into Christmas; and shortly thereafter, Western Christians adopted the Eastern feast of the Epiphany, still celebrating the Baptism, the first miracle, and the visit from the Wise Men. Thus, Epiphany came to mark the end of the Christmastide - the Twelve Days of Christmas, which began with the revelation of Christ to Israel in His Birth and ended with the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles at Epiphany.

In January there will NOT be a bus from the Savannah Deanery to Washington, DC for the annual March for

Life. Those interested in attending are urged to contact Independent Presbyterian Church at 236-3346, which sends a bus to Washington each year. An alternative option for 2016 is the Life March in St. Augustine in January, sponsored by the Savannah Deanery Catholic Youth. This trip will involve travel by bus with departure from Savannah on Friday, January 15th from St. Frances Cabrini Church, a peaceful walk in St. Augustine on Saturday, January 16th, and a return trip to Savannah by 11:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. Anyone interested should go to: www.marchforlifestaugustine.com for information.

PARISH MISSION - “DIVINE MERCY IN

THE GOSPELS” will be presented at St. Peter the Apostle Parish January 31st through February 3rd. This is the year the Pope has declared as the “Holy Year of Mercy”. During the mission, we will gather each evening in the church for a series of presentations on the Infinite Mercy of God, as shown to us in the Gospel of St. Luke: ♦ Ask for Mercy: The Prodigal Son ♦ Be Merciful to Others: The Good Samaritan ♦ Confidence in Mercy: The Sinful Woman ♦ The Cross: Wellspring of Infinite Divine Mercy Each evening will include Confession and Adoration (6:00 p.m.) and a presentation at 7:00 p.m. by Fr. Ben Cameron, C.P.M.

submit your card to the church even if you are unable to make a change to your

current level of giving. For those registered parishioners not currently supporting the church with regular

offertory gifts, please consider a monthly gift to support the needs of our parish.

Sixth and Seventh Grade students packed 495 boxes of non-perishable food items while on a fieldtrip to the Second Harvest Food Bank. These boxes of food will feed 495 families. Students also visited the Kids Café where they make over 2,500 meals per day to feed area children.

The 2nd grade is watching and waiting for their caterpillars to become butterflies. We have about 5 caterpillars in the chrysalis stage. We are feeding them milkweed and watching them get bigger and bigger. Now we are just waiting for the butterflies to appear.

LINE FOR MARRIED

COUPLES Every marriage travels through difficult times, some more challenging than others. Retrouvaille teaches

couples how to get through the tough times. Couples slowly and quietly drift apart, or are being torn apart by terrible words and actions. Are you frustrated, hurt or angry? Does talking about it only make it worse? This program offers the chance to rediscover yourself, your spouse, and a loving relationship in your marriage. The next Retrouvaille weekend is January 15th - 17th in an Augusta hotel. For more information or to register call 706-869-8434 or [email protected].

Are you interested in being trained in the Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family Planning? If so, plan to attend the training session taught by Betsy DeBry on Monday, January 11th at St. Anne’s Church, Holy Family Hall at 7:00 p.m. The class includes training in the method, followed by on-going instruction once the method is put into practice. Cost for the course is $75. Couples, either engaged or married, or singles, are welcome. For more information, please contact Betsy DeBry at 659-8244 or [email protected]

A New Year’s Prayer May God make your year a happy one!

Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain, But by strengthening you to bear it,

as it comes; Not by making your path easy,

But by making you sturdy to travel any path; Not by taking hardships from you, But by taking fear from your heart;

Not by granting you unbroken sunshine, But by keeping your face bright,

even in the shadows; Not by making your life always pleasant,

But by showing you when people and their causes need you most, and by making you

anxious to be there to help. God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you

for the year ahead.
