St Patrick’s Community I look forward to serving the St Patrick’s Community again in 2020. It is a privilege to work with such a professional leadership team consisting of Sean Geoghegan (Deputy Principal), Stephen Mortimer (Assistant Principal – Religious Education) and Tracey McLeod (Assistant Principal – Administration/Welfare). I also wish to welcome the following new teachers who are part of our Graduate Teaching Program. Madison Brett, Keely Hannant, Cathy Le and Rebecca Wootton. We also welcome Aaron Deckys, John Hegarty, Ellis Kettle, Daniel Skipper and Stephen Hislop as new teachers to the College community. Mrs Patricia Deguara joins our Administration team in the front office and we welcome the following Mercy College teachers Mr Paul Haverda, Mr Doug Bettington and Mr Damian Coles who will be teaching across the St Patrick’s and Mercy College campuses. St Patrick’s College Art Teacher, Mr David Gravino will also work across both St Patrick’s and Mercy College campuses. We all share a strong commitment to continue with the proud tradition of St Patrick’s College enhancing relationships between students, staff, parents and the wider community. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or suggestions. We appreciate feedback to assist in future planning and improvement. I also wish to acknowledge Fr Alex Varghese, Fr Sathish Peddakotla, Fr Jayanthi Maddala and Fr Sijo George of the St Patrick’s Parish community. We look forward to working closely with the St Patrick’s Parish to continue to develop a faith commitment within our student body. McGarry Bursaries Following the Mass, we presented the McGarry Bursaries. A bequest by the late Miss Joan McGarry has established perpetual bursaries to be presented each year to St Patrick’s College students. The trust is established in honour of Miss McGarry’s parents, the late Fred and Rose McGarry and her brother, the late Jim McGarry. As per the guidelines of the bequest, bursaries were awarded in the areas of Academic Achievement, Sporting and Cultural Excellence and Social Justice. As well, in recognition of Joan McGarry’s lifelong dedication to her profession of nursing, the student with the highest OP entering Nursing also receives a bursary. The intention of the bequest is that students receive the bursary once properly enrolled in a tertiary course after Year 12, with study to commence in the year of the bequest. These bursaries are not about money – although the money is substantial – the bursaries are about a gift to the future, a belief in young people, a hope to make things better for young people. An extraordinary gift to our whole community. Every year when we celebrate these bursaries, it is important that we reflect on the fact that we have a debt of gratitude and a responsibility to all those who have gone before us at St Patrick’s. There is a proud tradition of spreading and sharing the good news at this college and we become part of that tradition and we continue to create that tradition this year. It was wonderful to see the McGarry Bursary recipients so excited as they were all about to embark on studies for their various careers. This year saw $25,000 available to be distributed to successful students. The amount available for bursaries is advised to the College by Perpetual Trustees, who are the trustees of Joan McGarry’s estate. Bursaries are awarded according to a formula devised by the College Board in 2009 to meet the available money and number of eligible recipients each year.

Adrian was a person who had great integrity, a friendly nature and a great passion for Information Technology, Aerospace and Business. The successful awardee will be continuing with their education at the tertiary level and the bursary is both an acknowledgement of their involvement at the College and to assist with future studies. Andrew Vella (Year 12 in 2019) was awarded the $200 bursary at the Mass. Andrew is about to begin studies in Mechatronic Engineering. Adrian’s parents Allan and Sharon Smith were in attendance to present this bursary to Andrew. The Christian Brothers Vocational Education and Training Encouragement Bursary provides a cash prize of $250 which is intended to assist the student with the pursuit of their vocational goals. The bursary was presented by Mr Simon Korneliussen, our VET Coordinator. The Class of 1974 Bursary is sponsored by members of the Class of 1974, who have collectively made an outstanding contribution to the Mackay community and beyond – in the clergy, politics, business, law, trades and other fields. Through their generosity, a bursary which provides a rebate from the student’s college fees, has been made available to a current St Patrick’s College Year 12 student. This student will have demonstrated great dedication and commitment throughout Year 11 in overcoming adversity, or disability or circumstances to achieve academic success. The recipient of the Class of 1974 Bursary was Jesse Kirchner-Brandi. Mr Larry Lawler, who was a member of this class, presented the Bursary to Josh on behalf of The Class of 1974.

Tracey McLeod – Assistant to the Principal: Welfare and Administration Special Report: Moving to A New School Moving to a new school is a big deal! Your child is going to meet lots of new people and be thrown into new situations. That’s bound to make them feel lots of different emotions. They may feel worried and anxious, but also excited and happy – all at the same time! It is considered to be one of the most important transition periods of a student’s life and can present some significant psychological challenges for both students and parents. Making new friends, learning new routines, discovering new environments, accepting new cultures and adjusting to new learning practices is all part of the process. Some children will sail through this period of change, whilst others may need a bit more guidance. It is important to give your child the chance to feel comfortable in their new space. This may take a few months, but ensure you keep the lines of communication open and check in regularly with your child to see how they are settling in. In this Special Report, parents and care givers will be presented with a number of strategies that can be deployed to help ensure a smooth transition. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. Special Report: Surviving the Final Year It’s no secret that the end of school can be a huge source of anxiety for both students and parents alike. Studies have shown that over 40% of final year students suffer from high-level anxiety or stress, with some even suffering from depression. It is important to prepare a student’s brain for success. Studies show there is a clear link between students taking care of their health, and their overall productivity during the final year of school. Understanding how best to support your child’s health and wellbeing during this time will help them perform at their best. The student brain has a lot going on, so understanding how it works will help them get the most out their brain power. Acknowledge that not all stress is bad. The art is in finding the right balance. Having the right amount of stress can encourage students to be at their optimal level of alertness, and improve behavioural and cognitive performance. It helps tune their brain and focus. In this Special Report, parents and care givers will be presented with a number of strategies on how best to support their child during the final year at school. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. Karlie Tatchell – Regional Indigenous Education Liaison Officer Yarning Newsletter Hello my name is Karlie Tatchell and I am the Indigenous Education Liaison Officer for the Southern Cluster. I am at St Patrick’s College every Wednesday and you can find me in B2 (Chapel). My role is to provide cultural and pastoral support our Indigenous students and families, as well as support staff across the schools embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across the curriculum. Throughout the year, the College has activities and events that celebrate our cultural diversity and embrace reconciliation. One of the first events will be the QATSIF presentations for 2020. A record number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students will be receiving their scholarships which we will celebrate with the College community on Wednesday 11 March. More information will be forthcoming. What is QATSIF? It is the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation created to increase educational choices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students entering Year 11 or 12. While the history behind the trust being established is heartbreaking (stolen wages), it recognises that students who obtain their QCE have a strong foundation on which to build their lives on. The Year 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commencement Celebrations will be held in Rockhampton on the 27 and 28 February 2020. Mr Stephen Mortimer (APRE) will accompany myself and students to this event. Watch this space for photos and yarns! Year 12 students should have permission forms to hand to parents/carers. Please contact me if you haven’t received one. Yarn soon!

Glen Smith – Mathematics Coordinator Graphics Calculators Reminder to all students completing Mathematical Methods (Year 11) it is essential that you have a Graphics Calculator. Students need to have a Casio fx-CG 50 AU (or one of the older models, either a Casio fx-CG 20 AU or a Casio fx-9860G AU Plus). The Casio fx-CG 50 AU is available for purchase from the College office. Please note that if students choose to use any other models of graphics calculator, they cannot be guaranteed that their Mathematics teacher will be able to instruct them in the use of this calculator. I also highly recommend that students have their name engraved on the back of their calculator. Homework With the beginning of a new school year comes an opportunity for establishing new routines and work habits. If your son or daughter has not achieved their potential in Mathematics, now might be a good time to sit down and reflect on what methods of study are being used. All students doing a Mathematics subject should be getting homework every day they have a Mathematics class and one way to begin to improve Mathematics results is to ensure that all homework set is completed. Mathematics Tutoring: Beginning next week, there will be after school Mathematics Tutoring offered. Students have the opportunity to seek clarification of the work covered in class or to simply complete their homework with some guidance form a teacher. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend and take advantage of this excellent resource.

Aaron Deckys – AFL Coach AFL News Last week on assembly, I communicated an exciting opportunity that is available to the girls of St Patrick’s in the sporting arena. This year, AFLQ Mackay are hosting their inaugural Youth Girls AFLX Competition. AFLX is a modified version of the game of Australian Football, played in teams of ten with seven on the field and three on the bench. This version of the game is also able to be played on a rectangular field. This feature addresses the issue of the lack of ground availability. Following an expression of interest meeting with the girls, it looks like we will have enough interest to field four teams in the competition! This is certainly a promising sign regarding the level of interest in girls AFL in Mackay. Round One of games will occur on the Monday of Week 6 at Magpies Sportsground. Another exciting element to the competition is the fact that Round 2 will be played at Great Barrier Reef Arena as a curtain-raiser to the AFLW game, between the Gold Coast Suns and the Geelong Cats on Friday 5 March. For those not aware, past St Pat’s student Lauren Bella is a listed player for the Suns. It would be fantastic to see a multitude of St Pat’s students at the game cheering on Lauren. If any girls missed the meeting last week, they can either email myself [email protected] or see me in person to add their names to the list. Training will occur on Mondays leading up to games.

Mackay Orchestra Incorporated presents…. An opportunity for all musicians throughout Mackay…. Come and play with one of our three performing ensembles. The Mackay Orchestra Incorporated (MOI) Con Brio Orchestra rehearse Monday 4:30pm to 6pm. This is for musicians of all ages but predominantly students in the early years of their music careers. Our Conductor Mrs Gwenda Aay is well known in the Mackay Music Community for her patience and wonderful leadership of younger, up and coming musicians. The Mackay Youth Orchestra rehearse every Monday afternoon from 4:30pm to 6pm. The majority of our musicians are school aged students with a few years of experience. Musicians need to be able to moderately sight read sheet music, commit to rehearsals and are asked to audition. Our conductor, Mr Earl Winterstein is also well known around Mackay and a talented, multi instrument musician himself. The MOI Jazz Band is made up of both student and adult members of our community who all love to play Jazz and Blues. Rehearsals are Mondays, 6pm to 7pm. The MOI is looking for musicians of any age or ability who are prepared to commit time to their music and the orchestra. Rehearsals are at Mackay Christian College on Quarry Street, North Mackay. Check us out on Facebook at Mackay Orchestra, email us at [email protected] or just turn up at rehearsal on a Monday night and make yourself known. MOI offer scholarships via an audition process in early November each year or at other times if you have a skillset that we need. Just ask for details.
