Janelle Agius – Principal Welcome back to Term 3. This is a very important term of study for all our students, but especially for Year 12. It is vital that students settle into a solid pattern of study as soon as possible. The holidays are over and now is the time for the enjoyment and satisfaction that can be achieved through diligent hard work. I remind all students that school work is their full time occupation. Any part time work should be just that ‘part’ time. NAIDOC Week On Tuesday 14 July, students watched the NAIDOC Mass which was livestreamed from St Joseph’s Cathedral in Rockhampton. The theme of the Mass was: ‘Always Was. Always Will Be’. This was a celebration for all Catholic schools in the diocese, to come together to acknowledge and honour the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Last Wednesday 15 July, we sampled a range of traditional foods and celebrated during the second break with a barbeque and activities in St Patrick’s Square. A special thank you to Mrs Karlie Tatchell, Mrs Deborah Millar, Mr Stephen Mortimer, Mrs Kelsey Wallace and their helpers for organising this activity for us. St Patrick’s Community Last week we welcomed Mrs Amanda Sorensen to St Patrick’s College. Mrs Sorensen will be teaching English, Study of Religion and Design. Reports and Parent Teacher Night Semester One report cards are now available on Parent Lounge. Appointments for Parent – Teacher interviews on 30 July are also now able to be made via Parent Lounge. Students are expected to be part of the interview process. I wish to welcome all to come along to the evening. Subject Selection Evening Last night, we held our Subject Selection Evening for students wishing to attend St Patrick’s College for Year 11 in 2021. Thank you to all who attended this important night in the enrolment process. Any parents or enrolling students who were not able to attend or who would like more help with choosing their subjects for next year, I encourage you to contact the College office and talk with our College Counsellor, Mrs Danika Hurley. Parents & Friends Association Reminder that next P&F meeting will be held on Wednesday 5 August at 6.00 pm in the College Auditorium (J1). St Patrick’s College Rugby League Team Congratulations to Mr Chad Buckby and his Rugby League team. The boys won against the Rockhampton Boys Grammar on Wednesday, to qualify to compete in the Aaron Payne Cup with a score of 40 – 6. It was an honour for me to witness the strong teamwork of our side. I know the boys were proud to wear the St Pat’s jersey and it was great to see sport return following the recent restrictions. Good luck boys in all your upcoming games. Catholic Education Week Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queensland from 26 July – 1 August 2020. This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day. The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Celebrating 175 years of Catholic Education in Queensland. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. There are 306 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 149,000 students and employ more than 20,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way. As part of Catholic Education Week, St Patrick’s College nominated Scott McSherry and Matthew Paul for The Spirt of Catholic Education Award. This award recognises individuals making an outstanding contribution to Catholic Education in Queensland. Both Scott and Matthew have volunteered with our College Sports Department for many years. Our school is planning activities during the week to celebrate this milestone. I thank parents and students for your ongoing support and look forward to Catholic Education Week 2020. Parish Mass Update Dispensation of Obligation to Attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligations: Bishop Michael’s official decree dispensing us from this obligation remains until further notice. Churches Reopen Through the collaborative efforts of a number of Faith communities around Queensland, the plan for the reopening of Churches developed with the approval of the Queensland Government. An industry COVID safe plan for places of worship was developed to minimise the risk of the spread of the disease. Each parish has a COVID Team which is responsible for implementing the Industry Plan which Bishop Michael has agreed to for our Diocese. Thanks to members of our parish councils, liturgical teams and parishioners who make up these teams. Within the Southern Cluster of Mackay, planning and organisation for each of the different Churches may differ due to the physical size of the Church space for example, numbers for each service may be restricted to less than 100 for smaller Churches, such as St Mary’s. Keep an eye on the parish bulletin to see details for each Church or go to the Southern Cluster Website for updates. To facilitate organisation and determine numbers for each mass, we have been asked to book a ticket for masses, this can be done through a booking service. For weekend masses: https://www.trybooking.com/BKACF or you can book through the Southern Cluster of Mackay Website: https://www.mackaycatholics.net/

Tracey McLeod – Assistant Principal Welfare Administration Student’s Arriving and Leaving the Grounds Students arriving at college late or leaving early must always enter and exit the College grounds via Reception. No student should enter the College grounds without first signing in at Reception. If a student wishes to leave the grounds during a lunch break or class time, he/she must present a note from their parent/guardian, explaining the reason, to their first class teacher on the day. He/she will receive a pass out slip signed by the teacher. This slip will be presented to the class teacher at the time specified on the pass out slip if leaving during lesson. The student must sign out using their ID card at Reception as they depart the College grounds, as well as when they return.

Students are required to leave the parent’s note and the note from the printer as they sign out at Reception before they leaving the grounds. If returning, they must hand in the pass out slip when they sign back in on the terminals in Reception. Pass out slips must always be carried by students whilst they are off the College grounds. Students will not be permitted to leave the College to collect items from parents who are outside of the College grounds without following the correct sign in and out procedures. Parents who wish to speak to their children or drop off items, during the hours of 8:30am and 3:00pm must do so via the College Reception. No parents or guardians should be on College grounds during class and break times without signing in at Reception.

Karlie Tatchell – Regional Indigenous Education Liaison Officer Last week, our college community celebrated NAIDOC “Always Was. Always Will Be” 2020. A barbeque consisting of crocodile and kangaroo sausages had everyone’s taste buds curious and the scones, damper and jams were a sweet treat for those not so adventurous. We were honoured to share the celebrations with Elders and key Indigenous community members and Mercy College staff. St Patrick’s College was well represented with staff and students baking the dampers; cooking the sausages and serving our guests. The NAIDOC Cake was cut by college representatives and Aunty Lyn Irving. A gold coin donation for the event will see much needed support go towards the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Danika Hurley – College Counsellor It is an exciting time of the year again, but also a time of anxiousness, as Year 12 students decide on their next steps after they complete their schooling journey. Students doing ATAR, and their parents, were offered a very informative session last Wednesday evening, presented by Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), which was well received. There was a lot of important information provided answering questions about the new ATAR system and how students can apply through QTAC. Additional information, if you missed this, can be found at qtac.edu.au. Further information sessions are also being offered to students in lunchtimes and individually, as requested, to support their QTAC applications, Educational Access Scheme, adjustment factors, Early Offer Guarantee, accommodation and scholarship requirements. QTAC opens on 4 August and has a slightly different format this year, requiring students to 1. Create an ATAR account (if applying in Queensland and all other states, and can be set up from 4 August) at qtac.edu.au/atar; and 2. Create an QTAC application (which can be set up immediately). To lodge an application, students need to Create a QTAC account, fill out and lodge the application and submit copies of qualifications (if required). Students are also encourage to connect with QTAC through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube for the latest news and updates. It is advised that students read information on key dates, entry requirements, ordering preferences, documentation, and offers also as

they await the ATAR opening on 4 August. All students should have their QTAC Guide with further information, however if they have not collected one, they are still available at the Guidance Counsellors office each lunchtime. Early Offer Guarantees are a new initiative by certain universities to enable eligible Year 12 students to be offered an early and guaranteed place at university. These offers are made prior to the release of Year 12 results, so that students do not have to wait until the December or January QTAC offer rounds. Early and guaranteed offers are made to individual students based on approval from the College principal, who recognises effort and application in their schooling performance. The universities that are participating in this Early Offer Guarantee include JCU, CQU, USC, Torrens, TAFE, CHC, SAE INSTITUTE and USQ. Further information regarding each universities requirements and eligible courses can be found on their websites. As always, if you have any further questions or queries please contact me. I am best contacted via email on [email protected]. Do you have what it takes to be a HERO? Dorota Cook – Science Coordinator Tech Girls - Academy for Enterprising Girls Workshop Last term, the Tech Girls Movement (organised by the Academy for Enterprising Girls) offered a stimulating workshop online for girls interested in the STEM fields. Two of our UQ Science Ambassadors, Immogen Martin and Lauren Rickards, participated in the workshop. These are their reflections:

Immogen Martin – Tech Girls Workshop Participant During Week 10 of Term 2, I had the pleasure of attending a Tech Girls workshop with the Academy for Enterprising Girls.

The workshop was held online and I had the opportunity to connect with many other girls from around Queensland to develop ideas and solutions to societal problems. During the two and a half hour workshop, we brainstormed, researched and planned our solution for a societal issue of our choice. With the assistance of the workshop host, we were able to develop a plan for an app that could alleviate the severity of the issue, or solve it entirely. The workshop was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity. I would thoroughly recommend all females looking to make a positive impact, to check both the Tech Girls and Academy for Enterprising Girls websites, which offer programs and competitions.

Lauren Rickards – Tech Girls Workshop Participant

The Academy for Enterprising Girls offers courses for girls aged 10-18 to teach them: entrepreneur skills; design thinking skills; and how to start their own business. They are partnered with the Tech Girls Foundation which is designed to get girls interested and engaged with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industry. Books are provided to every school in Australia, that show kids and teenagers all the rewarding careers in STEM fields that women are in, and use strong powerful avatars to counteract the negative STEM stereotypes represented in the media. On the 24 June I participated in a workshop for girls about entrepreneurship, design, and problem solving. I

met many interesting people who shared the same interests and the workshop included girls from all over Queensland, including very rural communities. We did lots of brainstorming and planning on local and global issues affecting us right now. We discussed ways we can spread awareness and knowledge and what we can do to fix them. We also created an app design that can help tackle one of these many issues. We also had the opportunity to submit this app to the academy, giving it the opportunity to become a real app down the track. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I learnt so many great skills! I strongly recommend participating in one if you’re interested in the STEM field, or want to start your own business one day. Is darkness really the basis of the universe? In the Belly of the Water Beast Since the early 1990’s, the science world has regarded the universal expansion theory as fact. The expansion of the universe has been observed using the Hubble Space Telescope. Scientists at NASA followed the path of a distant supernovae, this supernovae helped scientists to discover that the universe has been expanding more rapidly. This rapid expansion of the universe is caused by what

scientists call dark energy, this dark energy makes up roughly 68% of the universe. Dark energy and dark matter are one of the biggest mysteries in science. As recently as April 2020, more theories are being founded. In fact, astrophysicists have observed satellite galaxies. These galaxies placed around the milky way, have shown the physical connection between size and structure of galaxies, and the halos dark matter that surrounds them. This mysterious halo like structure has recently been observed by the Hubble Telescope. In an image taken by NASA/ESA, you can observe the object UGC 695. This object is located in the constellation better known as The Sea Monster or The Whale, a constellation resting 30 million light years from earth. UGC 695 is known as a LBS (low surface brightness) galaxy, or a galaxy which has a higher fraction of dark matter in relation to their stars. These galaxies are very faint in comparison to other formations and this is due to the smaller number of stars found within them. In the image below, you can see a

cloud of dark matter which encases the object. This observation helps to prove that dark matter makes up much of the universe.

Simon Korneliussen – Vocational Edcucation and Training (VET) Coordinator Work Experience The College has been advised that we are now able to go ahead with whole cohort work experience. As with previous advice, we need to be aware that the situation may change at very short notice. If government recommendations change, this work experience may no longer be possible. Catholic Education are working to ensure COVIDsafe policies and procedures are in place both within the College and the student’s workplace. It is not compulsory for students to participate in whole cohort work experience but we are pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to students who wish to take it up. Work Experience dates: Year 12 5 – 16 October Year 11 12 – 16 October
