Janelle Agius – Principal Year 12 Final Documentation Just a reminder that Year 12 students’ final documentation will be available from the College from lunchtime on Wednesday 1 December. Students who have outstanding fees or library books will not be able to receive these documents until these matters are resolved. I wish all our graduating students the best as they continue their journey into the next stage of a wonderful life. Fees and Textbooks Please ensure that all fees are finalised as soon as possible. Year 12 students should have returned all their textbooks prior to next Friday’s graduation. Year 12 Students Driving I remind students of their obligation to remember to drive safely and obey all road rules when they leave the College on next Friday. Local police have indicated that there will be a strong law enforcement presence next Friday (Graduation Day) and over coming weeks. High spirits that can accompany significant moments such as leaving school for the last time, should not play out in bad behaviour whilst driving vehicles. Parties and Young People Hosting parties for people who are underage is a high risk activity and I remind parents of the legal obligations and issues that can surround such events. It is important that any hosts of non-official social events understand they can be held liable in law for any injury/breaches in criminal law by anyone attending under their supervision. The College disclaims any responsibility for any non-official functions held. I refer families to some excellent publications of the Queensland Police Service which discuss legal implications for young people and alcohol and drugs, and parties. 2022 Next Step Survey The Queensland Government will conduct its annual statewide survey of Year 12 completers in 2022. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.

Between March and June next year, our current Year 12 students will receive a letter from the Minister for Education or an email or phone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office inviting you to complete the survey. To enable them to reach you, please ensure your contact details are correct in your learning account by logging into the student portal at https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/

Further information on Next Step and results from previous surveys are available online at www.qld.gov.au/nextstep. Joseph Kelly – Assistant to the Principal: Mission Readings at Mass, Sunday 14 November 2021 – 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading, Dan 12:1-3… When that time comes your own people will be spared Psalm, 15:5, 8-11… Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope Second Reading, Heb 10:11-14, 18… By a single offering he has achieved the eternal perfection of those who are sanctified Gospel, Mk 13:24-32… He shall gather his elect from the four winds Readings at Mass, Sunday 21 November 2021 – Feast of Christ the King First Reading, Dan 7:13-14… His sovereignty is eternal Psalm, 92:1-2, 5… The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty Second Reading, Apoc 1:5-8… The ruler of the kings of the earth...made us a line of kings, priests to serve his God Gospel, Jn 18:33-37… You say that I am king An old Chinese story tells of a farmer whose only horse runs away. “How terrible!” say his neighbours. “Maybe!” says the farmer. The next day his horse returns, bringing along three wild horses. “How wonderful!” say his neighbours. “Maybe!” says the father. The following day his son tries to tame one of the wild horses, but he falls off and breaks his leg. “How terrible!” say his neighbours. “Maybe!” says the farmer. The next day some soldiers come along to force young men of the village to join them in war. Because the lad has a broken leg, he is left behind. “How fortunate!” say the neighbours. “Maybe!” says the farmer. The soldiers, still one man short, take the young man’s cousin instead. “How dreadful!” says the farmer’s neighbours. “Maybe!” says the farmer. That night a landslide covers the house in which the cousin would have been sleeping if he had not been taken by the soldiers. “How fortunate!” say the friends. “Maybe!” says the farmer. And so the story could go on! One of life’s great lessons is this: we are never sure just how things are going to turn out. As our Year 12 students are coming towards the end of their schooling, it is an important lesson to remember. If their attitude is always positive - determined to make the best of all situations that come their way - then our Graduating class of 2021 will always live a good life. May God bless all our Year 12 students as they move on from St Patrick’s College.

Report Cards As report cards were issued at the end of Unit 2, no report cards will be issued, however interim results will be available on Parent Lounge from Friday 3 December through the Learning Management System. Learning Management System (LMS) The College uses the Learning Management System (LMS) as a form of communication with students and parents regarding assessment. The due dates for all assessment items for all units are added to LMS and should be viewable through Parent Lounge and Student Café. Assessment due dates are easily seen by students through the ediary tab on Student Café. Results for each piece of assessment as well as comments, will be added to LMS once they have been marked and moderated by teaching staff. Parents may view results, due dates, and where appropriate, the actual assessment items, through Parent Lounge. These can be found by logging onto Parent Lounge and selecting: from the top menu Student details → Curricular Activities

or from the side menu Curricular Activities Due →view all activities or activities due.

You will also be able to view if your student has outstanding drafts for any subject. Parent ID numbers are listed on your school fee invoices. Access to Parent Lounge is required to view student reports and to make appointments for parent teacher interviews.

Danika Hurley and Susan McKay– College Counsellors Safe on Social "If you don’t send me a nude in 60 seconds I will send this image to some of your friends and say it is you"

This is the exact message a 16-year-old student received in her Instagram DM’s recently. When she ignored the message, the perpetrator sent a cropped image of a

naked young woman laying on a bed to some of her Instagram followers. There was nothing she could do to stop it. This is just one of many examples of sextortion we are hearing from students younger and younger. Sextortion is on the rise and we need to be able to talk about it. So…what exactly is sextortion? Sextortion is the practice of extorting money or sexual favours from someone by threatening to reveal evidence of their sexual activity. This is commonly played out when teens are sexting with peers (as a means to build trust) but once nudes or photos are shared they are then threatened with money - or their photos will be revealed to their friends, family, or Instagram/Snapchat followers. Safe on Social, works directly with students (like the 16-year-old girl mentioned above) who have experienced this. It’s an extremely traumatic, fearful, embarrassing, and stressful situation for the child at hand. Encouraging them to speak up is the most important thing we can do. They need to understand that if they are being threatened in any way we, the adults in their lives are here to hear them and help them.

If you’ve experienced Sextortion or need advice, the Safe on Social team are here to help. Simply reach out at any time if you need specific guidance in this area.

Donna Sumpter – Hospitality Teacher Year 11 Certificate II in Hospitality The Year 11 Hospitality class recently participated in a three day coffee workshop with Blueprint Careers Development Trainer, Ashleigh Black, as part of their Certificate II in Hospitality. The three day workshop covered the unit “SITHFAB005 Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee”. The workshop was held in the College kitchen where students learned to make a range of espresso coffees, including short and long black, flat white, ristretto, cappuccino, latte, macchiato and mocha on the College Boema coffee machine. Students enjoyed the course, learning new skills and updating their hospitality industry experience while working towards their Certificate II in Hospitality.

Warren Bolton – Teacher Year 11 Furnishing Students individually designed and manufactured wakeskates from the Year 11 Furnishing Class as part of their assessment. Each student had to design and develop a shape for their board and then using a pyrography pen, burn their own patterns into the timber, customising their individual boards.

1. Never accept DM requests through Instagram, assure them it will never be a friend (if it is, they will contact through other means). There may be a sinister side, and accepting a DM request is not safe.

2. Let them know that they can always speak to you without judgment, that you will help them if they make a mistake online, and something goes wrong. They need to know that they should never be afraid to speak up.

3. Know what to do when things go wrong. Make sure they know not to pay or respond to the demands at all. They should not engage at all. Teach them that they should take screenshots if something happens to have evidence if the authorities need to be notified. If you are in Australia, help your teen to make an image-based abuse report here or report to local Police or Crimestoppers at 1800333000

Kelsey Wallace – Campus Minister/Student Welface Officer Vinnies Christmas Appeal This week begins our Vinnies Christmas Appeal. This appeal has always been one that St Patrick’s College community gets behind and supports extraordinarily well. This year, we again encourage Year 11 students to bring in non-perishable foods, Christmas decorations, and toys to their respective religion classes. We will compile all donations and present them to a St Vincent de Paul representative at the Year 11 Christmas Liturgy on the last day of Term 4. Our donations will go towards helping families in the Mackay area, and you will be assisting those locally to have a Joyful and Happy Christmas. So please dig deep and help those experiencing difficulties, and spread some Christmas cheer.

Community Notices MONSTER CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

There may not be NORFAIR this year, but the parish is selling tickets in an amazing raffle. With a first prize of $10,000, tickets are great value at $5.00 each. The raffle will be drawn on Friday 10 December, just in time for Christmas. You’ve got to be in it to win it!

Tickets are available online, outside the churches before and after weekend Masses and from St Joseph's Parish Office (Monday - Friday 9am to 2:30pm phone 49574855).
