Late Fees to Be Waived for CertainWater Bills in Downtown Bayonne

The Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority (BMUA)announced that it is waiving late fees for certain waterbills issued in December to a designated area in down-town Bayonne. On December 7, the BMUA sent outwater bills to property owners from 1st Street through7th Street. The affected area also extends eastward toOak Street, Oak Court, and Isabella Avenue. The billswere carried to a mailing facility in Newark. By earlyJanuary, only about half of the bills were paid. TheBMUA staff knew that something was wrong when theutility received no payments at all from parts of thedowntown area. According to BMUA employees, its of-fice has received more than 100 inquiries from propertyowners asking about the water bill mailing, which manyof them apparently did not receive. Others apparentlyreceived the bills several days after they were mailed.

The BMUA sent out delin-quency notices earlier this monthto those downtown addresses thatdid not pay their December waterbills. That second mailingprompted calls from downtownproperty owners who said thatthey never received the originalmailing of the bills. The BMUAis working with the Postal Serv-ice to determine what happened with the mailing.

The account numbers of the bills in question beginwith the letter “F.” Late fees will be waived only forthose downtown Bayonne properties whose water ac-counts begin with that letter. The water account num-bers start with a different letter for each section ofBayonne. No other parts of Bayonne will be included inthe late fee waiver.

WOLFGANG PUCK’S KITCHENA perfect midwinter dessert

By Wolfgang PuckINDIVIDUAL BAKED ALASKAS Serves 6

1 loaf Classic Pound Cake (recipe follows), or goodstore-bought pound cake

1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, softened slightly at roomtemperature to scooping consistency

6 large cage-free egg whites1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar6 ounces sugarWith a sharp serrated bread knife, cut 6 crosswise

slices from the pound cake, each 1/2 inch thick. Use a3-inch round cookie cutter to cut a circular piece fromeach slice. Place the circles of pound cake about 2inches apart on a cookie sheet. (Enjoy the scraps and re-maining pound cake with tea or coffee.)

Mound a large scoop of vanilla ice cream on top ofeach of the 6 slices of pound cake. Immediately put thecookie sheet in the freezer and freeze the ice cream-topped pound cake until very hard, at least 1 hour.

Before serving time, preheat the broiler, positioningthe broiler rack 8 inches away from the heat source.

In the bowl of an electric mixture with the whip at-tachment, or in a mixing bowl using a hand-held elec-tric beater, beat together the egg whites and cream of

tartar at medium speed until they hold soft peaks thatdroop slightly when you lift out the beaters. Continuebeating while, 1 tablespoon at a time, you add the sugar.Beat until the meringue reaches stiff peaks that stand upstraight when you lift out the beaters. Spoon themeringue into a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip.

Remove the cookie sheet from the freezer. Quicklypipe a generous coating of meringue over the ice creamand pound cake, covering each one completely, startingat the bottom of each and piping in a spiral up to thetop.

Immediately place the cookie sheet under the broilerand broil just until the tops of the meringue arebrowned, about 2 minutes, watching carefully to pre-vent burning. Remove from the oven and serve imme-diately.

CLASSIC POUND CAKE Makes 1 loaf2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter, for brushing loaf pan1/2 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature1/2 tablespoon pure vanilla extract1/2 pound granulated sugar4 large cage-free eggs1/2 pound cake flour1/8 teaspoon saltPreheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Brush the inside of a 9-by-5-by-3-inch loaf pan withhalf of the melted butter. Cut parchment paper to fit thebottom and sides of the pan and line the pan with it,brushing again with the remaining butter. Set aside.

Put the butter in the bowl of a stand mixer or in amixing bowl. Using the whip attachment or a hand-heldelectric beater, beat at medium speed until creamy,about 5 minutes. While continuing to beat, add thevanilla extract, and the sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, until themixture is light and fluffy, 10 to 12 minutes. Beat in theeggs 1 at a time, waiting until each is fully incorporatedbefore adding the next. Reduce the speed and add theflour and salt, continuing to mix until well blended.

Pour the batter into the loaf pan. Bake until the top isgolden brown and abamboo skewer in-serted into the cen-ter comes out clean,about 1 hour. Trans-fer to a rack and coolfor 10 minutes. In-vert onto the rack,remove the pan, andcool completely be-fore storing in anairtight container.
