Columbus inspired others to

explore…Like John Cabot!• He was an Italian who lived in England seeking a

route to Asia.

• In 1497, he sailed west across the Atlantic.

• He landed in Newfoundland, an island off the coast

of Canada.

• “He coasted for three hundred leagues and landed;

he saw no human beings, but he has brought here

to the king certain snares which had been set to

catch game, and a needed for making nets.”

• “The discoverer…planted on his newly-found land a

large cross…”

A) Explain an understanding you have

about what Cabot did when he reached

land.

Like Columbus, Cabot

thought…

• He had landed in Asia

claim much of North America because of the flag planted in the ground by John Cabot in 1497.

B) Why do you think that England felt they had the right to claim North America?

In 1607, a group of English merchants formed the London

Company to start a moneymaking colony in Virginia.

-They crammed 105 settlers and 39 sailors into three

small ships to sail across the Atlantic!

-They called the swampy land they found

Jamestown, after King James I.

-What they did not know was that this

land was swarming with disease carrying mosquitos!

The colony settlers also faced

more conflicts…-This land was also surrounded by powerful American

Indian groups.

-These settlers were really only craftsmen/gentlemen.

None of them knew much about farming or hard work.

-They wanted GOLD! We don’t

have a clue

what we are

doing!

As food amounts decreased,

settlers tried to trade with

Indians. *The barter was not easy….Many Indians decided they

didn’t like trading arrangements

*Everyday, hunger and disease got worse and another body was buried.
