Respected members, Jai Jinendra, Strap on your winter gear 012. Here are the highlights of the

We received feedback from members through survey and during the General body meeting,

was discussed in length among BOT and JCC members enough emphasis is given on cost of

construction, utilization of current building and ongoing maintenance. BOT provided input to

JCC committee to limit project scope within $ 5.0 million and develop conceptual plans and

cost for single level and two level plans (with option to finish lower level later to stay within

budget). BOT authorized $ 10K budget to develop preliminary plans.

Nalinbhai and Arvindbhai Shah met with Doug Necci, architect to discuss development of

conceptual plans and costs. Doug Necci have done concepts development for JCC in 2013 and

Bharatiya Temple last expansion project also.

BOT and JCC Plan to present progress during 2015 Diwali program.

Humanitarian Projects / Sadharmik Bhakti : Most of us are familiar with Girivihar in Palitana.

They carry out number of activities under the banner of 'Anukampa'. It consists of medical

assistance including dialysis and other many humanitarian efforts. We (JSGD) were asked to

sponsor one machine for Dialysis. With a wonderful response from the donors we have raised $

5,316 that will go beyond the purchase of the machine. A sizable contribution came from non-Jain

members and from out of town donors. JSGD leadership team thanks all the donors for supporting

such a noble cause.

JAINA UPADTE: We regularly receive beautiful publication Jain Digest three to four times a year

from JAINA at no cost. JAINA has no membership fee. This publication gets circulated over more

than 100,000 Jains in North America and helps us to connect with other centers and globally.

Wonderful service to all Jains and Jain centers.

JAINA President Shri Ashokbhai Domadia has requested our JSGD BOARD chairman Hemantbhai

Shah to Chair the JAINA Fund raising committee. Hemantbhai(Veenaben) Shah will be heading

the JAINA Fund Raising and Jignesh (Jayshree) Madhani will co-chair with support from Sanjay

Bhandari and Tanya Madhani to co-ordinate for JAINA Digest. Both will be leading and supporting

this task for JAINA. Tanya Madhani has written interesting articles and critics on various, religious,

political and historical topics for The Michigan Daily Newspaper.

Fund Raising Chair 2015:

Pratik and Sangeen Shah will be our Fund Raising Chair for our 23rd Annual Fund Raising Dinner,

which is going to be on March 19th 2016 at Suburban Center in Novi , Michigan. Both Pratik and

Sangeen has worked in our society for many years in different capacities, Pratik was also president

of Guajarati Samaj and well connected with many non-profit organizations. This is a major event

during which we collect major fund for operation of the temple and society. We request members

to extend full support to them by joining the FRD team, getting the advertise from your contacts

and by inviting the friends during the event.

Finally Have you done the RSVP for the Diwali Swamivatsalya lunch yet? If not, please

Library Update It is our great pleasure to inform the members of JSGD that during Paryushan Maha Parva we were able to distribute (Free Prabhavana) of atleast 200 plus books to the members. It included from small English cartoon based books related to Jain Stories to many good books written by Guru Maharaj(s) and known scholars. We were fortunate to channel the Shrut Gnan to the interested members of our Center. We also had some specially purchased books from JAINA Education Committee for Prabhavana. We will certainly do similar set up in future. We appeal members to make a good use of our library for borrowing the books. The index of all the books in our library are listed on JSGD.org web site (under library section). Pranam from library coordinators

Compassion-- The Highest Spiritual Truth

The fundamental need for all of us is love "The fundamental need for all of us is love. Every living being is looking for pleasure—from the insignificant insect

to the kings and prime ministers. Every one is seeking pleasure, but there is only one pleasure that can reach the

heart, that is the pleasure of experiencing the heart’s need to love and to

receive love.

The pleasures of sensual experience, fame, acquisition of wealth, etc. can

reach the mind and the senses, but they don’t really touch the heart. What if

you were the proprietor of everything on earth when you were the only being

on earth? There will be no one to love you and there will be no one to be loved

by you. We need love, that’s our nature.

One thing that every spiritual path has in common is the characteristic of compassion. One who actually follows

a spiritual path is an instrument of compassion. In Jainism, one of the cardinal principles Lord Mahavira taught

is ahimsa, which means non-violence, respecting the integrity of the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of all

living beings, regardless of their race, religion, sects, economic or educational backgrounds or even their species—

to be compassionate towards others. In the Jain religion, they are very strict vegetarians because they want to

reduce the amount of violence that they commit to others. Bhagwan Mahavir said, "If you kill someone, it is

yourself you kill. If you overpower someone, it is yourself you overpower. If you torment some one, it is yourself

you torment. If you harm someone, it is yourself you harm." A wise man knows this and so he does not kill, nor

does he overpower or torment anyone.

To give in charity to get your name exalted is good, but it doesn’t touch your heart. But to give in charity because

you actually feel for the suffering of someone else and out of love you really want to help that person, that is real

charity. He fasted so that he could know what the pains of hunger are like and when we sees someone hungry, he

feels compassion for that person. The highest and most pleasing service that one can offer is to be willing to accept

inconvenience and difficulty in order to show care and compassion to another.

Jain Vani – Kids Section Punia Shravak

Punia Shravak and his wife were poor villagers by their own choice. They lived in a small shack made of mud and

grass. Punia had a vow not to earn more than 12 dokadas (1/12 rupee) every day. He did that by spinning cotton

yarn in the house and selling it. They also had another vow to offer food to a Sadharmik. As they could not afford

this , he would fast one day and his wife would fast on the next day. Even during such difficult situations, they

always offered their hospitality to fellow beings. In this way, the couple did Sadharmik Bhakti (helping deserving

people) every day.

Punia Shravak was known for his prac tice of Samayika. Once during

Samayika, he could not concentrate on meditation. He started thinking to

himself that what had he done that was disturbing his meditation. He could not

think of anything that would disturb his meditation. Therefore, he asked his

wife, "What have we done differently that I can't concentrate today.” At first,

his wife could not think of anything either. But as she kept on thinking, she

remembered that today while coming back

from market, she had picked up dry cow-

manure and used that as fuel to cook. She told Punia about this. He told her

that she should not have done that even though it did not belong to anyone. We

should only use things, which are bought from our daily earnings. Punia could

do true Samayika because he lived a life of such high morals.

Even Lord Mahaveera praised his Samayika. Once when king Shrenik asked

Lord Mahaveera how he can destroy his bad karmas to avoid being born in hell

in his next life, Lord Mahaveera said, "If you can buy Punia Shravak’s

Samayika then it may be possible.” King Shrenik went to Punia Shravak and

asked him, if he could buy his Samayika. He said, "I do Samayika not to sell, but to uplift my own soul. Religious

rituals can't be purchased. One has to do for himself.” King Shrenik left in disappointment but with admiration

for Punia's real faith in religion.

Key Message:

This shows that one can live a content life even with limited earnings. We should not take anything, which is not

given to us. We should not accumulate more money than necessary because it will create more problems. Vows or

rituals are done for spiritual uplift and not for monetary gain. In order to gain benefit from Samayika and other

forms of meditation and penance, it should be motivated by one’s inner self and not by any motives that conflict

with Jain principles.
