Jai Jinendra! Happy Spring time! Here is a summary of the events held after publication of the last Jain
Vani:
Our Eighteenth annual Fund Raising Program was held on March 19 with over 310
members and supporters in attendance. With generous support of donors and advertisers,
pledges from the program totaled over $141,000, a record for this event. We would like
to thank Akshay and Shweta Shah, co-chairs of the Fund Raising committee and all the
volunteers for a job well done.
Mahavir Panch Kalyanak Puja was performed on April 3rd. We also did the Aymbil Oli
from April 10th – 18th. There were 10 sponsors this time. 58 Society members did the
entire Oli.
Mahavir Janma Kalyanak Mohotsava was celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. 700
people attended the Swamivatsalya. We were able to start the program at sharp 10.00 am
and also end it on time. EC and BOT has been trying hard to start the programs on time
and we all have enjoyed the FRD and the MJK programs because of it. We hope more
and more people take note of it and show up early to the programs. We appreciate the
help from JOY and students from Study Class who recited the Snatra Puja. It was one of
the best Snatra pujas performed by our younger members.
The Uttar Pradesh Association of Detroit, in partnership with our Society held a Hasya
Kavi Samelan on Sunday May 1 at the Temple.
We have quite a few activities planned at the temple for the upcoming month.
The JOS (Jain Organization of Seniors) will start to meet on a monthly basis at the Temple on
first Tuesday of the month from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm starting on May 3.
Chicago Seniors will be coming in a yatra to our temple on May14th evening and leave on
May 15th afternoon. Please talk to Pratiksha Shah if you are willing to volunteer.
The JOY group will organize a SAT /ACT seminar on Sunday May 22. The Father’s Day
picnic is planned for Sunday, June 19th.
The Thirteenth Temple Anniversary celebration will take place during the weekend of June 24

Volunteer Drive Speech
By ANAND BORA
At the Fund Raising Dinner, those who were there might recall me saying that volunteers are priceless. Today I continue on
this very subject of volunteers. Our goal is to involve every member of this society in our “Volunteer Drive”. Each one of
you has donated money and will continue to do so. Today, I ask you for your TIME.
The Temple needs you, your time. We all take pride in our temple. We have it today because members of the Society came
together and volunteered to make it happen. It is the responsibility of each and every member of the Society, to maintain this
temple and volunteer for its betterment. Just like you think about your home – this is MY home, think this is MY temple
and you will know what you have to do.
What is in there for me? --- By volunteering you get inner peace and a feeling of gratitude, you will present new ideas
something which we may have missed, new members in the society will make some new friends, and seniors can spend this
time for their inner and spiritual growth. Those who are young and in school will learn how to carry this responsibility in the
future. By volunteering for the temple, you will only gain, because it is like serving God.
Finally I would like to conclude with the story by Nobel Prize winner Ms. Wangari Maathai of Kenya. … Once upon a time,
long long ago, there was a huge jungle in Central Africa. There were animals big and small, staying happily in the jungle.
Once, the jungle caught fire. Lots of wind caused the fire to grow fast and soon there is fire all over. All the animals started
running away from the fire and come out of the jungle and were now standing and watching the fire. One small
hummingbird thought – I must do something about the fire. He flew to the nearby ravine, brought a drop of water in its beak
and puts it on to the fire and of it went again. Every time it flew back and forth, all the animals including large ones like the
elephant who could bring much more water in its trunk wondered why the hummingbird was doing this. So, one of them
stopped the hummingbird and asks him what was he trying to do? Did he really think that the fire could be turned off by the
little amount of water he was bringing? And the hummingbird replied – I am doing the best I can. I am doing the best I can...
My message to you all is – be the hummingbird of the Society and do the best you can. If we all do our best, we will become
one of the most vibrant Jain Societies in the entire United States, and I can guarantee that. Thank you….
Below is the Volunteer Card. Please fill and return to any EC member. Please fill the # of hours’ field with hours per week,
per month or per year. We appreciate your help. Thank you.

Jai Jinendra! JOY had many spectacular events this past year including the annual
Winter camp. The camp was a great success. A special thanks to all
the chaperones that helped make this possible. During winter camp
we bonded, discussed very interesting Jain topics, and above all had
fun! We learned how to deal with real life situations involving
religion and beliefs. This included working at non-vegetarian
restaurants (preparing and serving such food). Marrying to a non-Jain
was another topic that was discussed.
JOY members assisted at the annual Fund Raising Dinner by
volunteering their time at the check-in desk, distributing and
collecting pledge cards and escorting the various speakers/dignitaries
