Introduction from theHead of DepartmentThe University of Sheffield's Department of MechanicalEngineering is one of the finest places to work and study inthe University. We are justly proud of all our staff andstudents and the contribution they make to theDepartment. Our philosophy is one of fostering a cultureof innovative teaching and entrepreneurial cutting-edgeresearch. We aim to excel at everything we do and workhard to maintain the highest of standards. We also like tothink we make engineering exciting!
Our core course is a BEng or MEng in MechanicalEngineering. But we recognise people have differinginterests within the discipline and so we also haveprogrammes which include an emphasis on sportsengineering, motorsport engineering management orindustrial management. You can also learn a language andstudy abroad in one of our partner universities as part ofyour degree. All new students are paired up with apersonal tutor, who you see on a twice weekly basis duringyour first year and regularly during the rest of your course.Your tutor is there to offer you help and support, whetheracademic or pastoral.
Our students are amongst the best in the country and wehave over 400 undergraduates and 75 postgraduates. Werecruit bright and able young people and challenge themto achieve at the very highest levels. We offer a great dealof choice in our undergraduate programmes and we areconstantly reviewing and updating them.
Our staff are dedicated professional engineers with a widerange of specialist expertise. So you will be taught bysomebody who is practicing in the field and up to datewith the most recent technology. Their links with industryhave an important input to the teaching and project workand also help with graduate recruitment. You, as anundergraduate, can reap the benefits of the interests andexpertise of staff in the Department. We plan to liven up
academic learning with innovation, research, discovery, design and manufacture. You will get to grips with realengineering projects, and benefit from our closepartnerships with companies including Boeing, BAESystems, Airbus, Ford Motor Company, Rolls-Royce, Nissan,Shell, and many more of the world's leading companies.
We continually invest in facilities for students in theDepartment; we have installed a flight simulator, purchased a Formula 4 race car, set up an enterprisecentre, refurbished several laboratories and invested in anew undergraduate workshop where students can gettheir hands dirty. These, combined with a design office, well equipped lecture theatres, and a computer-aided-design centre give you the very best facilities to supportthe more formal lectures and tutorials.

Mechanical Engineering is one of eight engineeringdisciplines that forms the Faculty of Engineering atSheffield University. We offer a friendly and excitingenvironment for learning, with guidance and advice beingoffered throughout your time at the University. MechanicalEngineering is probably the most broadly based of all theengineering professions. A career in mechanicalengineering could involve you in any stage of theconception, design, production, finance and marketing ofall manufactured goods – from the largest power station, space craft and car plant to delicate mechanisms requiredfor scientific instruments, heart valves or micro-surgery.As a mechanical engineer, you could end up working for asmall to medium sized company, or a larger employer suchas Arup, GKN, Shell, Rolls-Royce, Rover, Jaguar or ICI. Thenagain, you could work independently, begin your ownbusiness or become established in research.
All our MEng courses take four years to complete. Thefour-year MEng degree is the only direct routeto Professional Chartered Engineer status. Our MEngcourses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers (IMechE). The MEng with a Year in Industrytakes five years to complete.
Our standard BEng course takes three years to completeand is also accredited by the Institution of MechanicalEngineers (IMechE). The BEng with a Year in Industry takesfour years to complete with the industrial year being thefourth year. To qualify for Chartered Engineer status with aBEng will require at least one year’s extra study.
The curriculum is designed to develop individuals in theskills necessary to become successful mechanicalengineers. The fundamental scientific, technical andengineering subjects are accompanied by the developmentof a high level of computer literacy, training in businesseconomics, management and communication skills. Thecourses are designed to develop individual ability in oraland written communication, team working andpresentation skills. We also aim to give you the essentialskills for the self-learning and continuous professionaldevelopment that you will need in a career involvingcontinually advancing technology.

“I graduated in 2007 with an MEng inMechanical Engineering from theUniversity of Sheffield. Aftercompleting a summer placement atbuilding design consultancy, BuroHappold, I went on to work in theirLeeds office as a building servicesengineer for the following two years.”Last September I returned to Sheffield and student life, currently based in MaterialsEngineering as part of the new E-Futures Doctoral Training Centre (for energyresearch). So far we have experienced a number of lectures from manydepartments across the University with an interest in energy and completed a twomonth research project. For this I looked at the energy benefits of green roofs forbuildings. For my next project I am working in the Tribology group in MechanicalEngineering, and after a further two month project will be starting my PhD in thecurrently very general field of energy.
Outside of work I started playing water polo when I first came to University. After astint playing at City of Leeds, I have rejoined the university team this year.
In the fourth year of my undergraduate course Iwas awarded with the Ford WISE prize, anational award which recognises achievementsmade by female undergraduate engineers.

Industrial Liaison: Dr Andrzej F. NowakowskiPart of the requirement to become a ProfessionalChartered Engineer (CEng) is proper practical training.During the first year of the course, you will be introducedto the basic workshop practice needed in EngineeringApplications. Employment in the summer vacations cancontribute to this training, and will provide relevantexperience of engineering which will help with your courseat Sheffield and your development towards professionalengineer status. If you are a sponsored student, trainingand experience provided by your sponsor before youruniversity course will also count.
Industrial sponsorship is well worth considering. It usuallytakes the form of a ‘thick sandwich’ of a deferred entryyear in industry, the four-year degree course and a finalyear in industry. You gain the advantage of fulfilling thetraining requirements at an early stage, you have theopportunity to do real work on practical projects duringyour training assignments and you may receive a bursarywhile at university from your sponsor.
The Admissions Tutor can give you advice on sponsorshipsor you can get information from the Careers Service ofyour local education authority.
IMechE Liaison: Dr Stephen BeckWe encourage you to become a student member of theInstitution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) while you arestudying at Sheffield. Student membership is free. Onceyou have achieved your MEng, you are on the road to beingadmitted to corporate membership and to gaining theprofessional qualification of CEng, a Chartered Engineer. You will need to gain suitable experience and demonstratethat you hold a position of some professional engineeringresponsibility, but by the time you are around 25-28 yearsold, you should be able to add the letters CEng, MIMechE,after your name, and Eur Ing before, if you wish.

“I am a great believer thatlearning by doing is one of thebest ways of mastering the art of engineering.”Hola! My name is Elena Rodriguez-Falcon and I am a Senior University Teacherin the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Before I came to the UK I workedin industry for several years in my country of origin; Mexico. Since I joined theUniversity I have taught courses in Enterprise, Business Planning andTechnology Strategy. In my courses, you can expect to work on real lifeproblems, with real clients and with real practitioners. I am a great believer thatlearning by doing is one of the best ways of mastering the art of engineering! Ialso believe that through learning we can make a difference, so you can alsoexpect to be involved in projects that could make someone’s life better, such asyoung Kieron Norton, a seven year old boy with cerebral palsy who was oneyear the ‘client’ in one of my courses. It was amazing.
In my spare time, I like working with groups of volunteering students and withthe Engineering without Borders organisation on projects to develop solutionsfor people who require the support. Recently, we developed a walking frame forthe Sheffield Children Hospital for short stature children.
When I am not at work or volunteering I like spending my time with my family, looking after my African Pygmy Hedgehog, Prickly, or going to the cinema orshopping.

Mechsoc is your society, run by us, for you. We’re here tosupport you through your degree whilst you study here inSheffield. We work hard to offset the sometimeschallenging academic demands of an engineering degreeand generally improve your student experience.
Like most academic related societies, one of our mainfunctions is to help you meet other people on your course.Having friends doing the same course as you is a majoradvantage when it comes to working on projects and atexam time. And how do you think we encourage meetingpeople? MechSoc Socials!
So far this year we’ve organised a 150-engineer strong barcrawl early in freshers’ week so that everyone can getacquainted with Sheffield and their fellow engineers.During the first month an International Students Social wasset up so that more members could be integrated into ourcommunity. The classic pub golf has also been a staple ofour yearly calendar.
Don’t worry; we don’t only abuse our bodies going out. They also take abuse through sports! This year we havefour Intra-Mural 6-a-side football teams competing in the University of Sheffield leagues.
There are also badminton and squash leagues that oursports officer will be able to enter you into if racquets areyour forte. If there are other sports that you fancycompeting in at intra-mural level, feel free to contact theSports Officer and we’ll see what we can do.
As a society we not only take care of your free time, possibly the most important thing that we do for you isprovide the best opportunities we can so that yourSheffield experience will prepare you to take your careerto the next level. Finally, we’re the society run for you by you. We’re alwayslooking for people to get involved, be it standing in theMechSoc elections, playing for a sports team, showingpotential students around the University or just by comingon the socials. So when you arrive, please get involved. We’re MechSoc.
