NEWSLETTER 2nd March 2015

From the Principal

Welcome everyone to Week 6.

Secondary School Camp

As I write, all seems to be going well on camp in Sydney. I met the

group yesterday at the Art Gallery NSW and all was well. The mood

was high among students and staff, though I can’t be sure the staff

still feel that way after the first night in the tents.

A few photos have come through, thanks to Mrs Gibson. More to come.

Lockdown and Evacuation Drills

We expect to run a lock down drill during the week of 9-13 March and an evacuation drill

during the week of 16-20 March.

This is a good opportunity to mention our parents’ role during lock downs. In the event of a

genuine lock down, parents do sometimes attempt to contact their child. This is

understandable, of course. The objective of a lock down, however, is to keep children silent

and out of sight. A telephone call or text message at such a time would indicate the child’s

location (and the location of other children and the teacher) to anyone who might hear it.

Arriving at the school can also complicate the situation and, again, jeopardise the safety of

staff and students.

For this reason we ask that no parent attempt to contact their child during a lock down

procedure. Thanks for your co-operation in this.

NSW Parents’ Council Event

The NSW Parents’ Council will run the ‘Parents Congress’ on Sunday 8 March, a free event. As

explained in their flyer:

The Parents Congress is your opportunity for as little as 90 minutes on a Sunday afternoon

to hear about some of the most advanced ideas about better parenting, engaging with

teachers and schools, and the pathways to quality learning outcomes.

Meet our renowned speakers and have your questions answered regarding parent

engagement and educational policy and options.

Register and attend local venues (and receive a free parent kit!) in your region. If you

can’t attend a face-to-face session you can register to watch the live webcast and have

your questions submitted online.

Congratulations Laura

In October 2014 the Orange City Touch Association held trials for the Rep Touch Teams from

8 years to 18 years. Laura Sharp (Year 9) was chosen in the 16 years girls’ side to compete in

carnivals in Orange and Mudgee, as a lead-up to the State Junior Touch Carnival in Port

Macquarie.

Last week Laura made the trip to Port Macquarie. The competition is the largest junior

sporting competition in the southern hemisphere, with over 330 teams and over 1,000 players,

coaches and referees.

Laura’s team played two games on Friday afternoon for two wins. On Saturday they played

four games for two wins and two losses; this put them third in their pool with one game to

play Sunday.

The girls were in a good position to make the finals, but unfortunately the weather was not

kind and the carnival had to be abandoned, with three feet of water covering the fields.

The Orange rep sides were all very competitive, with some teams undefeated. The carnival

presents an opportunity to be selected for the NSW State teams, and Orange had at least

two players chosen in each age group.

Congratulations to Laura for being chosen and putting in the months of training required at

this level. A reminder that trials are held around October each year and are open to anyone

who is interested in representing Orange.

PRC - By now all students should have a Premiers Reading Challenge sheet with cover letter.

Parents do not need to register their children. Ms Taylor does this. All that needs to be written

on the sheet is the title and the author. Please take note of the cover letters instructions as to

how many texts a student needs to read to complete the challenge.

World Read Aloud Day -

Wednesday the 4th of March is World Read Aloud Day. This is a timely opportunity to remind

all parents and families of the importance of reading aloud to young children. One

interesting statistic is below;

"Reading aloud to children every day puts them almost a year ahead of children who do not

receive daily read aloud regardless of parental income, education level or cultural

background.”(Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research)

Some 'World Read Aloud Day' activities will be occurring in the library on Wednesday 4th

HICES Debating 2015 HICES Debating Round 1 was held at Scots in Bathurst last week. It was a pleasant occasion

of argument and ideas in an atmosphere of respect. There were solid results for each of our

teams and although all but the Middle B team (Year 8) went down in each case they were

close results. Each team received positive comments from the adjudicators.

Particularly pleasing given that again all of our teams are quite inexperienced. Our new

primary team of Jess, Henry, Imogen and Elouisa did well in their first HICES debate. Well

done.

Dudley Cup Debating is on Mar 10 at Kinross and Round 2 of HICES at Blue Mountains on Mar

19. More information will be coming out to teams soon.

WW1 - 2015

As you are no doubt aware 2015 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign.

To mark this event, the Year Stage 5 Elective History class is compiling an electronic book that

highlights the involvement of Orange Anglican Grammar School families in the Gallipoli

Campaign in 1915.

If you have a relative who served at Gallipoli or in any other theatre in World War I, we would

appreciate you sharing their stories, letters, diaries, photographs etc. with us so they can be

included in the book and your relatives service can be recognised by the Orange Anglican

Grammar School community and beyond. Wherever possible, we would appreciate it if you

could send copies (either hardcopy or electronic) of valuable documents and photographs

but if this is not possible, the school will take great care of originals and will return them to you

as soon as possible.

If you have stories, letters, diaries or photographs relating to a relatives service at Gallipoli or

any other theatre of World War I and you would like to take part in this project, it would be

appreciated if you could send any documents to the school no later than Monday, 2nd

March 2015 to [email protected] as the students will need time to collate

information and compile their book.

To assist in gathering information you can speak to other relatives, access Orange City Library

or your local Library and the following website; http://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/

This will be a valuable learning experience for students and families as they will gain deeper

insight into the nature of the Gallipoli campaign and World War I.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy 2015

LETTER TO PARENTS

In May 2015 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 12-14 May 2015.

TUESDAY 12 MAY WEDNESDAY 13 MAY THURSDAY 14 MAY Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) Writing

Reading Numeracy

In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.

Friday 15 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day. Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if they:

• are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

• have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to

participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, Braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are available to meet the needs of individual students.

Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in consultation with the Principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed.

Please make an appointment with the principal of the school your child attends if you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent_Carer_support/index.html.
