• 1880 U.S census took 8 years to complete the population count. In 1890, Herman Hollerith, an employee of U.S. Census Bureau, automated population count. He devised punch cards with 12 rows and 24 columns that recorded the salient facts about each person. The cards were then slipped between a grid of mercury cups and a set of spring-loaded pins, which created an electric circuit wherever there was a hole. The machine could analyze not only the row total, but also the combination of traits like number of married males, foreign born people etc. It was the first major use of electrical circuit to process information.
