It is meant to be that way. In one 24-hour period, we travel through the emotions of soul-searching regret and remorse, heartfelt resolution and reconciliation, and mindful acceptance and appreciation. By the end of the day, we are tired, hungry and exhausted, but also inspired, rejuvenated and ready to face a new year. Such is the path of repentance and forgiveness. The emotion that I most feel now, at the end of another High Holy Days season, is gratitude. Every year that I have served Temple Sinai, I have come to this time of year with deep appreciation for the tireless commitment of Temple Sinai's members and staff in making our Days of Awe meaningful for everyone. I offer my first deep thanks to Cantor Deborah Johnson who brings so much exuberance, feeling and beauty to our services all year long. I am grateful also to Raymond Buttero, our choir director and accompanist, who creates memorable musical experience for us all. The High Holy Day choir itself is a treasure for our congregation. I must also express my deep thanks to our Cantor Emeritus Remmie Brown who brought us to tears with his moving Yizkor service. I am so grateful this year to our new Temple President, Gregg Rosen, who did such a great job of introducing himself on Rosh Hashanah and of expressing his vision for our community. Thank you to Sherry Kriss who coordinated the honors for the High Holy Days superbly, as she does every year, and thank you to Steve Hirsch who leads our ushers and looks after our safety. Thank you also to Alana Deluty and her team of high school students – Caleb Gupta, Eli Land, Joelye Land, Blake Land, and Daniel Meyerson – who led joyful and memorable Family Services in the Chapel. Thank you to the three speakers at our Rosh Hashanah evening service – Paula Annenberg, Mike Schlesinger, and Susannah Carter – who shared stories of their Jewish journeys with us. I also want to thank our Temple's Past Presidents who join me on the bimah for Kol Nidre every year as living symbols of our congregation's continuity with its past, and commitment to the future. You do more than hold Torah scrolls. You hold up and sustain the collective memory of our congregation. Coordinating everything behind the scenes is our amazing Temple Administrator, Dottie Swajian, who is the calm, warm, friendly, funny, thoughtful and precise heart at the center of our congregation. Thank you, Dottie, for everything. In addition to all of those thanks, I have to add one more – thank you to you. At the beginning of our Rosh Hashanah evening service, I asked you to recognize that your voice and your prayers give strength and support to every person in the Sanctuary. You did a great job. You brought all your spirit, prayer and love into our services. That not only makes my job easier, it makes my work infinitely more fulfilling. Thank you! L'shanah tovah, May you have a good new year, Rabbi Jeff Goldwasser

From the Cantor’s Desk By Cantor Deborah Johnson

If you have loved, you have prayed: prayed that love is returned, prayed that the loved one never leaves, and perhaps especially, prayed that nothing untoward happens to the loved one, or if it has, that he/she recovers promptly.

The Mi Sheberach is our much-beloved prayer for those who are ill or recovering from illness. Some say it rivals the Sh’ma as the most important prayer in our service. The name is taken from its first two Hebrew words: “mi shebeirach,” “[May The One] who blessed.” It loosely translates as: “May The One who blessed our ancestors…bless and heal the one who is ill…May The One overflow with compassion and restore him/her…and strengthen him/her….May The One send him/her, speedily, along with all the ill, a complete healing of body and soul, and let us all say: Amen!”

The prayer has its origins in ancient Babylonia. In our earliest prayerbooks, it was said only on Mondays and Thursdays, when the Torah was read -- perhaps as a way to get people to services on those days – and asked for all good things for the congregation, and beginning in

the 12th century with a donation, for an individual. As one Rabbi said: “Who wouldn’t want to have a prayer that asked God to deliver good fortune, because you came to services and gave tzedakah?”

The Rabbi’s words contain a gem of insight. Our prayer does not merely call for the miracle of healing, but for the courage to endure inevitable suffering. This “reality check” helps us to feel less powerless in the face of things over which we ultimately have no control.

The Mi Shebeirach it is not an “officially” mandated prayer, and for that reason, there is room for many lovely musical settings. Unquestionably the best-known, sung in Reform congregations around the world, was written by Debbie Friedman, a Jewish folk singer who revolutionized Jewish liturgical music at the end of the 20th century. She actually wrote it for herself, following a neurological episode from which she eventually died. However, for very different, equally beautiful treatments of the prayer, listen to a couple of my favorites which I hope to bring you from time to time: Lisa Levine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZJ2Fr9h7SY), CraigTaubman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3ZRCxnLnT8), and Leon Sher (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEA9L3stnDc).

May we all, and those we love, move from illness to healing when it is God’s will, and may we have strength to endure when it is not.

See you at services!

Social Action By Bob Haiken

Our dedicated Sandwiches at Sinai sandwich makers will continue their monthly mitzvah on Sunday, November 24, at 10:00 AM. Please join the fun preparing the sandwiches and feel the warmth of providing a small but well appreciated bit of nourishment for needy neighbors.

The Social Action Committee has been re-constituted. Our mandate is to organize and promote congregational action on social issues, including both relief efforts to provide for people in need, and advocacy efforts to seek policies for justice and peace. We will need and look forward to your interest, comment and support as we move forward with these issues.

Donate your warm winter clothing in good condition for reuse by others starting November 17, and continuing through the cold weather.

Bring those old, but usable bicycles, parts and accessories that are currently collecting dust in your home to Temple Sinai on November 17 and 24. We will be donating what we collect to Recycle A Bike RI, an organization dedicated to educating, empowering, and building community by connecting people and bicycles. Let’s keep those items out of trash by repurposing them. Collection dates will be Sunday November 17 and 24 from 9 to 11 am.

The Teacher as Role Model

The great teacher Abraham Joshua Heschel taught, What we need more than anything else in not textbooks but text people. It is the personality of the teacher which is the text that the pupils read, and the text they never forget.

With our new, one-day-a week model, we are encouraging more student engagement, experiential learning, nurturing relationships to build community, and a greater emphasis on making learning life-relevant.

We begin our day with kudos for students’ happy news and t’filah, a mini-worship service, to ease students’ familiarity with prayers and songs. We follow with classes of all levels. Our school has been blessed with wonderful, skilled and caring teachers (morim), who do so much to make each lesson meaningful for students and to keep their families in the loop.

While we usually think only of staff members, some fine instruction also has been given by others. Our Israeli emissary, Or Cohen (shlichah) introduced Israeli High Holiday preparations with games and meaningful discussion while outside using natural props. Three of our student teachers (madrihim), Blake, Joelye and Eli Land, helped ready us for Sukkot, a Festival holiday, by teaching new songs to our classes. (Imagine “Shake your lulav,” to the tune of Twist and Shout!).

Our youngest pupils were building a classroom sukkah (hut) and practicing its traditions. Older students were grappling with how to apply Jewish values after comparing views on ancient examples, then baking traditional Jewish recipes. The Confirmation class discussed images of beauty and finding God in personal relationships. Teachers in Hebrew classes addressed each student’s needs, practiced prayers and even combined classes to sing beautiful rounds. Referring to the happiness of his child at the end of class, a parent recently said to me, “This is not your father’s (or mother’s) Hebrew school!”
