Impact on the US and Israel"

The Middle East today is beset by conflict and protest, as simultaneous and overlap-ping wars stretching from Libya to Syria to Yemen further destabilize the region.

From the rise of ISIS to the effort to combat Iran, Jordan will explore a framework for understanding the conflicts in the Middle East today, and discuss the threats --

and surprising opportunities -- that they present to Israel and the United States. Jordan Reimer is a policy analyst at RAND in the defense and political sciences depart-

ment. He has an MPA from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and studied in Egypt and Yemen. He served as a policymaker at the Department of Defense under two administrations, focusing on Iraq, Iran, and the Arabian Peninsula. Before

RAND, Jordan was an intelligence analyst at the NYC Police Department, working on counter-terrorism investigations with a nexus to Syria. He is

also a lecturer and course instructor on conflict and insurgency in the post-Arab Spring Middle East, radicalization, and political Islam, most recently

at New York University.

Shabbat, Jan 4 | Immediately After Davening All parents of 4th-6th grade boys are urgently invited to attend a meeting with Rav

Yosef, members of the Rechov Yeladim Committee, and Alon and staff. The 4th-6th grade years are critical to our children’s developing the capacity and skills to function in a teen /

adult shul setting, and at this time the boys’ 4-6th grade Rechov Yeladim program needs significant attention. Rav Yosef and the committee have already begun to think in serious

ways about this, and this meeting on the 4th will determine how we go forward. We need – and your son needs - your ideas, thoughts, and involvement. Together (only!) we can do

this.

What should you do if you are travelling out of town over Chanukah? What

are your lighting obligations and options? Let’s say for example that you are in a hotel overnight, but the rest of your

family is at home. The Halacha is that if your family is lighting with you in mind, then you can fulfill the Mitzvah through them (as the Mitzva is funda-mentally defined as “a light, for a person and his/her household”). Nonethe-

less, it is always preferable that you light on your own anyway, both because personal participation is always preferable, and because part of the Mitzva is

to see the lights, and as a result to think of the miracle. (“Seeing” is so signifi-cant in fact, that if for whatever reason a person is simply unable to light his

own lights, but sees the lights that another has lit, she should recite the bra-cha עשה ניסים.) Even if you are eating dinner at the home of a friend, the

proper place to light is back at your hotel room, which is your “home” for

the night.

If you (and your family) are staying with relatives out-of-town, then you have the option of making a financial contribution to the cost of the candles or oil,

and participating in that way in the lighting that your hosts are doing. Once

again though, if you can light your own, that’s always the first choice.

Shabbat, January 18 "The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness"

Father Gregory Boyle will share what he has learned in three decades working with marginalized populations at Homeboy In-

dustries in Los Angeles, Calif.—that love is the answer, community is the context, and tenderness is the connective tissue. Ten-derness reflects the foundational notion that there are no us and them, only us. Homeboy seeks to be what the world is invited to

become. Kinship cannot happen without tenderness.

Shabbat, Jan 4

On January 1st, 2020, Jews around the world will cele-brate the conclusion of the 7 ½ year cycle of “Daf Yomi”,

little learning of our own, also to be concluded by Jan. 1. Please participate by signing up for one (or more) Mishna

from Pirkei Avot! Join us on Shabbat morning, January 4th for a special drasha on our Pirkei Avot learning.
