Dinky Dome Designed by John V. KoesterOriginally The Minnesota Bible College the Dinky dome is named because of its adjacency to the neighboring commercial district. The building is square in dimension at 99’8” by 99’8”standing three stories tall. The glass dome centered over the building is made of steel double structure truss-framing creating two domes of glass. The 90-year-old Dinkydome began as home to the Minnesota Bible College, but it has long housed businesses related to the university, fast-food restaurants, and a coffee shop.
Hastings City HallDesigned by A.M. Radcliff and completed in 1870, the building s e r v e d as the Dakota County Courthouse u n t i l 1974. It became Hastings City Hall in 1 9 9 3 . The structure incorporates Italian Villa and Romanesque Revival features and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remains one of the most dominant structures in downtown Hastings, even though an unsympathetic addition in 1955 damaged its original integrity.
Minnesota State Capitol Designed by Cass Gilbert and modeled after Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome - the unsupported marble dome is the second largest in the world, after Saint Peter’s.It is the third building to serve t h i s purpose: the first capitol w a s destroyed by fire in 1881, and the second was completed in 1883, but was considered to be too small almost immediately.
Gilbert drew ire for choosing stone from Georgia rather than native Minnesota stone. A compromise was eventually made where the base of the building and interior spaces used varieties of native stone, including Kasota stone, and the rare Pipestone used by Native Americans for their peace pipes.
1st Capitol
St. Mary's Orthodox CathedralFounded in 1887 by Russian immigrants (Austrians, Hungarians, Bohemians, Slovaks, Czechoslovaks, Russians, and Poles), continues to thrive while persevering through numerous hardships over the last 100+ years.
Cathedral of Saint Paul Designed by Emmanuel Louis Masqueray is one of the largest and most historic churches in the United States and is rightly listed as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is a treasure forall Americans. It compares to the great cathedrals of Europe. This, the fourth Cathedral of Saint Paul, was the dream of Archbishop John Ireland, who secured the site in 1904.The 120-foot-wide dome has a clay tile surface overlaid with copper. A copper-clad lantern approximately 30 feet tall on top of the base lends to the Cathedral’s overall height of 306 feet. Masqueray completed only a few interior designs before he died suddenlyin 1917. Consequently, the archbishops and designers who succeeded Ireland and Masqueray assumed the responsibility of transforming the Cathedral’s stark, whitewashed interior into a decorative masterpiece.

• “Candid Camera” was followed after each broadcast by another pioneer of reality TV, the Ted Mack talent search show, “Original Amateur Hour.” Ted
Mack’s show televised amateurs competing before a live audience, who chose the winner. It was the fi rst example of public voting determining the outcome of a TV show, predating “Idol” by decades.• The longest running reality show in the United States is “Cops,” which has been gracing our sets since 1989. • MTV likes to tout its series “The Real World” (a success since the early ‘90s and still going strong) as the father of what most think of as modern reality TV, but that distinction probably goes to PBS’ “An American Family.” The 1973 series followed a family as they went through a divorce. • “An American Life” was so infl uential that it inspired a well-reviewed cinematic satire by comedian and fi lmmaker, Albert Brooks. 1979’s “Real Life” follows a fi lmmaker (played by Brooks) who is so inspired by the success of the PBS series that he tries to replicate it with a different family, with unexpectedly dire results.• The incidence of reality programming on TV today is higher than it has ever been. One in four programs in primetime is reality based. In addition to its popularity with audiences, the genre is popular with TV executives for its cost-saving benefi ts. The average reality show costs about $500,000 per episode, compared to $2 million for a sitcom.• Although reality TV has been a viable genre for over six decades, it’s taken a while for the Emmys to take notice. The fi rst award in the genre, “Outstanding Reality-Competition Series,” was given in 2003 to “The Amazing Race.” • In 2008, an additional category was added honoring “Best Reality TV Show Host.” It went to “Survivor” host Jeff Probst, who has since become a repeat winner in the category.• Reality shows aren’t just
infl uential in the United States. Singer Susan Boyle’s 2009 audition on the UK’s popular show “Britain’s Got Talent” has been viewed 120 million times on YouTube. • Reality television has also reached the Muslim world. In 2010, a show called “Imam Muda” pitted contestants in a variety of challenges. These challenges included tests of Islamic theory, the counseling of teenagers and the recitation of the Quran. The winner received a job as an Imam, along with a free scholarship in Saudi Arabia and a new car.• The most popular reality show in the United States is “American Idol,” but few know its origins. “Idol” was created in the ‘90s by Simon Fuller. Fuller rose to prominence as the manager, and some would say manufacturer, of pop sensation The Spice Girls. He was so important to the group’s success that the British press dubbed him “Svengali Spice.” When the group suddenly fi red him, Fuller devised a way to create a group over which he had full control, thus “Idol” was born.• “American Idol” was actually supposed to be an online show when Fuller created it in 1997. However, the lack of high-speed internet in most homes made the idea unfeasible, so Fuller went to television to broadcast his idea instead.• “American Idol” is actually a spin-off of a similar program in Great Britain called “Pop Idol.” After agreeing to be one of the judges on the upstart American version, Simon Cowell nearly quit in the last week before the fi rst episode aired. Cowell worried that his confrontational, distinctly British personality would not work with American audiences.• In the nonfi ction book “American Idol: The Untold Story,” author Richard Rushfi eld interviewed Cowell about his nearly quitting the show before it ever aired. Cowell said, “I remember calling my lawyer, and I said, 'I don't want to do it. I haven't signed the contract. Get me out of it.”• Fortunately, Fox producers managed to talk Cowell out of abandoning the show. They convinced him he’d have “free rein” and wouldn’t need to alter his abrasive persona for American viewers. One other judge did back out at the last moment, however. Originally, the show was to feature four hosts, but a Los Angeles radio DJ named Stryker quit the show at the last minute. • Stryker was worried the “cheesy singing contest” would hurt his image. With no time to recast, the show decided to go with three judges instead. In an ironic coincidence, Stryker later served as the house DJ for the daytime talk show hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. DeGeneres was briefl y added as a fourth judge on “American Idol.” • “Idol” fi xture Ryan Seacrest nearly wasn’t on the show as well. After being chosen for the show, contract negotiations stalled between the network and Seacrest’s father, who served as his manager. Seacrest signed his contract mere hours before the fi rst episode was shot.

■ On July 31, 1715, a hurricane strikes the east coast of Florida, sinking 10 Spanish treasure ships carrying tons of gold and silver coins and
killing nearly 1,000 people. About 80 percent of the treasures was recovered within a year, but the rest remained lost until the 1960s.
■ On Aug. 5, 1858, the fi rst telegraph line across the Atlantic Ocean is completed. Four British and American vessels met in mid-ocean and successfully laid 2,000 miles of cable, often at a depth of more than 2 miles.
■ On Aug. 2, 1876, “Wild Bill” Hickok, one of the greatest gunfi ghters of the American West, is murdered in Deadwood, S.D. Hickok was playing cards with his back to the saloon door when a young gunslinger named Jack McCall walked into the saloon, approached Hickok from behind, and shot him in the back of the head.
■ On July 30, 1976, American Bruce Jenner wins gold in the decathlon at the Montreal Olympics and sets a world record in the event. After his win, Jenner was
voted the 1976 AP Male Athlete of the Year. The 1976 Olympics was his last decathlon.
■ On Aug. 9, 1936, at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, black American track star Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold medal of the Games in the 4-by-100-meter relay. His relay team set a new world record of 39.8 seconds, which stood for 20 years.
■ On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s fi rst atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Some 80,000 people are killed as a result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least 60,000 more would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the radioactive fallout.
■ On Aug. 7, 1959, the U.S. unmanned spacecraft Explorer 6 is launched into an orbit around the Earth. The spacecraft featured a scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit.
■ On Aug. 11, 1965, in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, a riot began that eventually ranged over a 50-
square-mile area. With the assistance of thousands of National Guardsmen, order was restored fi ve days later. The violence left 34 dead, 1,032 injured, nearly 4,000 arrested and $40 million worth of property destroyed.
■ On Aug. 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon announces his intention to become the fi rst president in American history to resign. With impeachment proceedings under way against him for his involvement in the Watergate affair, Nixon fi nally bowed to pressure from the public and Congress to leave the White House.
■ On Aug. 10, 1981, Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies gets the 3,631st hit of his baseball career, breaking Stan Musial’s record for most hits by a National Leaguer. It was only Rose’s 2,886th game; it had taken Musial 3,026 games to set the mark.
■ On Aug. 12, 1990, fossil hunter Susan Hendrickson discovers three huge bones jutting out of a cliff in South Dakota. They turned out to be part of the largest Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered, a 65 million-year-old specimen. Amazingly, the skeleton was more than 90 percent complete. ▲ “Keep a globe or world map in your living
room or family room, along with a dictionary. This way, you can look up the meaning or spelling of a word if you hear it on television, and you’ll be able to reference the map for places mentioned. I consult mine often.” -- P.A. in Florida
▲ “Purchase a variety of wooden frames from secondhand stores or tag sales, and paint them all one color. It makes a statement when you hang them all close together on a wall. We created a nice large display this way, and it was very inexpensive to do.” -- E.M. in Arizona
▲ “When painting, write the name and brand of paint under the room’s light switch. If you ever need to go out and buy more, you will know where to start.” --

Uses for Amonia
● Use as plant food Give the alkalineloving fl owering plants and vegetables in your garden—such as clematis, lilac, hydrangea, and cucumbers— an occasional special treat with a shower of 1/4 cup ammonia diluted in 1 gallon (3.7 liters) water. They’ll especially appreciatethe boost in nitrogen.
● Keep stray animals out of your trash Few things can be quite as startling as a raccoon leaping out of your garbage pail just as you’re about to make your nightly trash deposit. Keep away those masked scavengers and other strays by spraying the outside and lids of your garbage bins with half-strength ammonia or by spraying the bags inside.
● Remove stains from concrete Tired of those annoying discolorations on your concrete work? To get rid of them, scrub with 1 cup ammonia diluted in 1 gallon (3.7 liters) water. Hose it down well when you’re done.
TIP BITSHELPFUL HOME
Did you hear about the guy who lost his left arm and left leg in a car accident? He’s all right now.
▲■▲Ten percent of all accidents on the road are caused by people who have been drinking. So ninety percent of accidents are due to people who are stone-cold sober.

There are no scratches on the outside of this car, but the vehicle is totaled. A man in Waterton, came out to fi nd the inside of his 18 month old Toyota Sequoia trashed. A grizzly bear had somehow got a door open (easy considering the way the handles are) and once inside got trapped when the door shut behind him. Probably by the wind.
The Toyota was a platinum edition, all the door panels were ripped off, the headliner torn to pieces, all headrests, the leather seats, the dash shredded. The steering column was twisted sideways. Two of the six airbags went off, the other four the bear ripped to pieces.
You can imagine a trapped grizzly being hit with an airbag in an enclosed space! He must have fi gured he was in for the fi ght of his life …and by the looks of this car, he won the fi ght. When the bear ripped off the door panels he also clawed all the wiring harnesses out. Toyota fi gures every wire he pulled or clawed at resulted in alarm bells, voices or sparks.
The head mechanic at Calgary Toyota doubted if they had the expertise to put this vehicle back together, even if they had enough parts to do it. And, to add insult to injury, the bear took a big dump in the back of the SUV ….and then broke out the rear window.
Fish and wildlife offi cers have inspected the damage and fi gure it was a 3 year old Griz. From blood left behind they are doing DNA.
The vehicle has been written off by the insurance company. The cost new was over $70,000, and they stopped counting repair costs at $60,000+.
So you think you might go bear hunting? Let us know how that goes if you do.

Since we spent some
time on the stars of reality television, it seems appropriate to allot a little space to the medium that provided them stardom. Here are a few interesting pieces of information about the invention that helped shape the modern age.• The fi rst displayed image on a television was only 30 grainy lines. It was displayed in the year 1926 by J.L. Baird. The digital image currently seen on our TV sets is nearly 35 times as dense. In addition to being a much clearer image, the digital signal of modern televisions is 1,080 lines. • Until late last year, the largest plasma TV available for purchase was a 103-inch plasma sold by Panasonic. It comes at the budget-unfriendly (except for the fabulously wealthy) price of $70,000. • However, Panasonic unveiled an even larger one at the most recent Consumer Electronics Show (known as the “Super Bowl
of Technology”) in Las Vegas. The 152-inch Panasonic 3D Plasma TV can be had by the true television connoisseur for $500,000.• July 1, 1941, marked the broadcast of the very fi rst advertisement in TV history. It occurred prior to a baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Brooklyn Dodgers. • The ad for Bulova Watches was 20 seconds long. The price for those 20 seconds of airtime was only $9.• To put it in perspective, in 2008, a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl broadcast went for $2.7 million. It was the most expensive airtime in the world to that point.• The shortest TV commercial ever produced was for a Canadian music and video channel called MuchMusic. It was created by a Canadian named Tharanga Ramanayake. He produced 12 different versions of the commercial. Each of these was a half a frame long. That’s the equivalent of 1/60th of a second! Even those with the shortest attention spans would have a pretty hard time registering that. The fi rst of these micro-commercials was aired
on January 2, 2002. • The current struggle over piracy that has been the focus of the music, movie and gaming industries is by no means the fi rst piracy issue addressed in the courts. In 1970, when Sony fi rst began selling video cassette recorders (or VCRs) capable of recording shows off television, they were sued by the fi lm studios for copyright infringement. Years later, Sony would be vindicated by the Supreme Court.• The two longest-running talk shows in the history of television are found in Ireland and the United States. “The Tonight Show” in America is the longest running, still going strong since fi rst airing in 1954. The second longest is the “Late Late Show” of Ireland. It’s been on since 1962. • The youngest-ever TV host of his own show is in Australia. It’s Luis Tanner, the presenter of “Cooking for Kids with Luis” on that country’s Nickelodeon channel. Though he’s 13 years old now, the fi rst episode of Luis’ weekly show aired when he was just six years old!

The Reluctant PsychicPassages
I’m frequently asked what it’s like when someone passes away. The mystery of death is always interesting to contemplate. I don’t pretend to know all of the answers, but I can tell you what I’ve experienced. One night a few years ago I was getting ready for bed when my guide told me to get dressed and go the to bedside of a friend’s mother. I didn’t know the mother so I was confused as to why I was supposed to be there. After arguing with my guide for a few moments I decided it would be best for me to get dressed and go to the nursing home. It was about 11:30 p.m. when I arrived. I wasn’t a relative. The staff didn’t know me at all. I quietly went in and sat beside my friend’s mother. The nursing staff approached me to see why I was there and to let me know that she wasn’t expected to pass that night. I thanked them and asked if I could just sit quietly beside her. After about an hour or more, and much to my surprise, her husband’s spirit arrived to stand above her. Shortly after that my mother arrived and then my sister - everyone in spirit form. As I was acknowledging all of these spirits, her spirit pulled
right out of her body through her head. It was a beautiful thing to see. A lovely cream color that sparkled like someone had thrown glitter on her. She looked like something out of Hollywood. She hovered there just briefl y when her husband wrapped his arms around her and they vanished. There was a short pause before my mother and then sister vanished too. I was stunned and I’m sure I had the largest smile on my face. It was then that I realized her body had begun to go through the dying process. It took about 10 minutes before it was all over. I can’t say that this is how it works every time, but I fi nd comfort in believing that it is. Thank you for your interest and attention. If you’d like to have a reading, please contact me. Till next time, stay in touch with yourself, your life, and with those loved ones who have moved on.
