It is now estimated that as much as 90% of the population is in some degree of adrenal stress that over time can trigger detrimental effects in the body causing chronic health issues. It works like this, your adrenal glands sit over your kidneys where they play a signicant role by secreting more than 50 hormones necessary for life. These same glands respond to everyday stress by short-term secretion of adrenaline, DHEA and cortisol. This is necessary to help you navigate any limited stressful event. However, states of chronic long term stress and being driven through the day by abnormally high levels of adrenaline and cortisol can result over time in anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes and other chronic diseases. Studies have even shown a connection of elevated cortisol levels to Alzheimer’s. When testing through a salivary Adrenal Stress Index Test, I nd many individuals with unexplained anxiety and insomnia suffering from high states of adrenaline and cortisol output. I refer to this as Adrenal Drive Syndrome. Having this information helps to properly treat the individual’s anxiety and/or insomnia and prevent future health problems. There is more…Under constant stress your adrenal glands also become fatigued and adrenal hormone production can actually fall off, leading to deciencies in cortisol, DHEA and pregnenolone. Now, the hormones that got you through a normal work day are depleted, and you can begin to struggle with other symptoms, like chronic fatigue, difculty getting up in the morning, dizziness upon standing, depression, irritability, craving for sugar and caffeine, weight gain, and thyroid symptoms that do not respond medication. Referred to as Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome this also can be diagnosed with a properly administered salivary Adrenal Stress Index Test. Misunderstanding of this bafing complex of stress related symptoms many times ends up with individuals being placed unnecessarily on antidepressants and other dangerous medications. What primarily causes this epidemic of people developing Adrenal Drive Syndrome and subsequent Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is our modern lifestyle; a lifestyle permeated with poor diets, smoking, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, overwork, lack of relaxation, and then comes the subsequent chronic pain, infections, allergies and illness which is all to readily treated with surgery, drugs and other toxic medicinal relief. Moreover, most doctors do not understand Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome and therefore fail to run the proper tests to diagnose it, leaving the poor patient wondering if it is all in their head. How can you tell if you have Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome? Do you wake up exhausted after eight hours of sleep?, need two cups of coffee to open your eyes? Do you crave sweets or salt?, feel depressed? Have you lost interest in sex, keep catching colds, and have trouble falling asleep? If so, you may have adrenal fatigue. The very best way to know if you are suffering with adrenal and/or thyroid issues is to have laboratory testing done by a doctor knowledgeable in Functional Medicine. If laboratory testing reveal that your adrenal glands are not functioning properly, you need to address the problem appropriately. Most people may need dietary changes, hormonal support and co-factored supplements to rebalance the adrenal function. Depending on a person’s unique needs and health prole, hormones can be replaced or supported directly through the use of specic supplements. The causes, proper diagnosis, and supplemental relief options of this disabling syndrome will be the subject matter of my upcoming seminars. THESE SEMINARS ARE FREE AND ALL ATTENDEES WILL BE GIVEN A FREE ADRENAL SCREENING EXAM. They will be held Wednesday, June 6th and Monday, June 11th 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the Pain and Brain Healing Center and Monday, June 18th 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Northtown library. ► On May 21, 1881, in Washington, D.C., humanitarians Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons found the American National Red Cross, an organization

established to provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters.

► On May 24, 1917, after losing 373 Allied and neutral ships in one month because of attacks by German U-boat submarines, the British Royal Navy introduces a convoy system, whereby all merchant ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean would travel in groups under the protection of the British navy.

► On May 27, 1963, Bob Dylan releases his second album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” which included future hits “Blowin’ In the Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.”

► On May 25, 1977, the communist government of China lifts its decade-old ban on the writings of William Shakespeare. Mao Tse-Tung’s 1966 revolution had banned any cultural work -- music, literature, fi lm or theater -- that did not have the required ideological content. By the early 1970s China was desperate for new sources of trade, and the revolution was declared ended.

► On May 31, 1859, the massive clock-tower bell known as Big Ben, located at the top of the 320-foot-high St. Stephen’s Tower, rings out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the fi rst time. Just two months later, however, the heavy striker cracked the bell.

► On May 30, 1911, the inaugural Indianapolis 500 is run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. With the exception of a break in 1917 and 1918 for World War I and from 1942 to 1945 for World War II, the 200-lap, 2 1/2-mile race has been run every year.

► On May 29, 1932, the so-called Bonus Expeditionary Force, a group of 1,000 World War I veterans seeking cash payments for their veterans’ bonus certifi cates, arrive in Washington, D.C. One month later, that number had swelled to nearly 20,000 strong.

► On June 3, 1956, Santa Cruz, Calif., authorities announced a total ban on rock and roll music at public gatherings. Just two weeks later, Time magazine reported on similar bans enacted in Asbury Park, N.J., and San Antonio, Texas.

► On May 28, 1987, Matthias Rust, a 19-year-old amateur pilot from West Germany, takes off from Helsinki, Finland, and travels undetected through more than 400 miles of Soviet airspace. After Rust landed his small Cessna aircraft in Red Square by the Kremlin, an American diplomat in the Soviet Union joked, “Maybe we should build a bunch of Cessnas.”

• A fourth “Bruce” was made from the same mold as those used in the fi lm. Although it never had a place in the fi lming of “Jaws,” it was employed at the Universal Theme Park from 1975 to 1990.• In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror classic “The Birds,” people in a California beach town are suddenly terrorized by swarms of birds. As outlandish as the premise sounds, it was inspired by an incident only two years before where birds in Monterey Bay suddenly began crashing into local houses. • Many years later, the strange real-life occurrence that inspired “The Birds” was explained as the result of toxic algae in the birds’ water supply.• In the 1976 suspense blockbuster “The Omen,” a couple (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) takes on the care of an orphan who may literally be the devil’s spawn. The fi lming of this movie was so crazy it inspired the documentary “The Curse of the Omen.”• Not one, not two, but three planes associated with “The Omen” were hit by

lightning during the shoot. Among those onboard during these three separate incidents were star Gregory Peck, screenwriter David Seltzer and executive producer Mace Neufeld.• Speaking of Mace Neufeld, his hotel during the “The Omen” shoot was the object of an IRA bombing. A restaurant frequented by the cast and crew was also bombed. Luckily, no one was hurt in either incident.• The special effects coordinator of the fi lm had the spookiest scrape. On Friday the 13th, 1976, he crashed his car in Holland. When he got out, he noticed the road sign. It read “Ommen, 66.6 km.”• In terms of sheer danger, the fi lm shoot for the 1925 epic “Ben-Hur” (the second of three cinematic adaptations of the novel of the same name) takes the cake. The chariot race in the fi lm is still renowned for its realism, because the race was completely real. • “Ben-Hur’s” director Fred Niblo wasn’t happy with the initial footage of the race, so he staged it again. The second time, he told the stunt drivers that the winner of the race would be given the equivalent of around $1,000. Drivers

took the race so seriously that there was a huge pile-up of men and horses before the fi nish line.• Another scene in “Ben-Hur,” a huge sea battle between two ships, proved equally dangerous. Italian extras were recruited and separated by political affi liation (pro- or anti-fascist), then put on the two boats, to give the on-boat clashes more “realism.”• After separating the two sets of extras according to their violently opposed political affi liations, “Ben-Hur’s” director gave all the men prop swords that had actually been sharpened, again for “realism.”• In Howard Hughes' misbegotten 1956 epic “The Conqueror,” John Wayne played Genghis Khan. Filming was disastrous from the very start, when a fl ash fl ood nearly claimed the entire crew of the fi lm.• Later, “The Conqueror’s” lead actress, Susan Hayward, was attacked by a panther. Fortunately, she survived the attack and was able to carry on fi lming. • Most of the fi lming of “The Conqueror” took place in St. George, Utah. Heat during fi lming regularly topped 120 degrees, and, unbeknownst

to the performers, not far away in Yucca Flats, Nevada, were the military testing grounds for the atomic bomb.• Eleven atomic bombs were tested in Yucca Flats during fi lming of “The Conqueror.” Not only were the actors and crew exposed to dusts blown over from the nuclear test site, fi lmmakers unknowingly shipped 60 tons of the radioactive dirt back to Los Angeles for reshoots.• There aren’t many fi lms more beloved than 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz,” starring Judy Garland. A little known fact is that she wasn’t the child actor the screenwriters had in mind for the part. Their choice for the part wasn’t a child actor at all: W.C. Fields!• In “The Wizard of Oz,” actress Margaret Hamilton offered one of the best villains in fi lm history — The Wicked Witch of the West. Her performance was so good, in fact, that many of her scenes were trimmed down or even removed because they were too frightening.

Before guests come over, give the whole cake a once over holding the hair dryer about 7-10 inches away from the frosting and set on high. It will soften the frosting, giving the cake a just-made look.” -- R.L. in California

■ Remove hard-water stains and mineral deposits from your showerhead with this trick: Fill a zip-lock baggie halfway with warm vinegar. Immerse your showerhead in the baggie and secure it to the pipe with a rubber band. Let it hang for an hour or so, then release the bag and scrub the showerhead with a soft toothbrush.

■ You might not have a blackboard in your home, but keep a clean blackboard eraser around to get streaks off of freshly cleaned windows. It works really well in the car, too!

■ From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here’s a great tip to use when grilling chicken: “When applying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it’s often hard to keep the rub affi xed, and it’s even more diffi cult to keep the chicken’s original, golden color. Try ‘painting’ chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to applying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your fi nal product will be visually appealing -- without any trace of mustard fl avor.”

■ When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. This way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won’t affect the taste of the food.

■ To cover a picnic table in windy conditions, choose a fi tted bed sheet. A kid-friendly alternative is to cover a table entirely with white butcher paper, taped at the seams and secured underneath with strong tape, such as duct tape. The kids can busy themselves drawing placemats and decorations for everyone in crayon while the adults do the grilling.

Among the countless actors and actresses that have graced our TVs or movie screens, there are an untold number of fascinating stories about how those men and women got there in the fi rst place. Here are a few of the most interesting ones. • Although Elvis wasn’t primarily an actor (though he did appear in 31 movies between 1956 and 1969), his eighth grade teacher certainly encouraged acting over his eventual day job. She told him that he had no "aptitude for singing." Fortunately, he politely disagreed with her appraisal and became the best-selling recording artist of all time.• Emmy-nominated actress Jane Lynch of the hit Fox show “Glee” got her fi rst break from doing commercials for Frosted Flakes. She struck up a friendship with the commercials’ director, Christopher Guest. Later he would cast her for big spotlight roles in his fi lms “Best in Show” and “A Mighty Wind.”• People strongly associate John Travolta with his starring role as Danny Zuko in the smash movie version of "Grease.” Yet fi ve years earlier another future star played the same role in a theater production of “Grease.” He was a then little-known actor named Richard Gere.• Before he became the blockbuster superstar we know from such movies as “Rain Man” and “Mission: Impossible,” Tom Cruise considered a far different calling: priesthood. In fact, he told Parade magazine: "I looked at the priesthood and said, ‘This is what I’m going to do.’” Fortunately for Hollywood, he ultimately decided not to become “Father Cruise.”• Before becoming the world-famous director of the two highest-grossing movies of all time, “Titanic” and “Avatar,” James Cameron drove a bus for a living. • Long before winning an Oscar in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in “Jerry Maguire,” Cuba Gooding worked as a back-up dancer for Lionel Richie. When Richie played the Olympics in 1984, Gooding was with him. • Mick Jagger once considered a more stable calling than “internationally

famous rock star.” He originally studied to be an accountant at the London School of Economics.• Legendary actor Christopher Lee — who has appeared in over 275 movies and shows in his long, illustrious career — was once a heroic fi gure in another life, too. He was a Special Operations Executive during World War II, serving as part of an elite unit commissioned directly by Winston Churchill. • Also serving in the unit with Christopher Lee was Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Many of Bond’s adventures were actually modeled after Fleming’s own experiences with the elite commando unit.• Kurt Russell has been on our TVs and movie screens since the 1970s, but did you know he was also a champion athlete? Before injury, Russell played minor league baseball. His batting average when he retired was .586! He was a pretty good race car driver also, winning six national championships before he was 21.

The Hills Are Alive• During the fi lming of the opening scene of The Sound of Music, with Julie Andrews on top of the mountain, she kept getting thrown to the ground by the helicopter’s’ downdraft.• Several future stars auditioned to play the von Trapp children, including Richard Dreyfuss (who couldn’t dance), Kurt Russell, Patty Duke, Mia Farrow, Sharon Tate, Lesley Ann Warren, and four of the Osmond brothers. Doris Day and Audrey Hepburn were considered for the role of Maria.• Yul Brenner, Sean Connery, and Richard Burton were considered for the role of

Captain von Trapp. • Christopher Plummer, who played the Captain, intensely disliked working on the fi lm and likened acting with Julie Andrews to “being hit over the head with a big Valentine’s Day card.”• The von Trapp house used in the movie actually belonged to Hedy Lamarr.• The movie is practically unknown in Austria, but there are tours of the fi lm’s locales for tourists. • To offer more showings, a South Korean movie theater once cut out all the songs to shorten the movie.

We’re Not In Kansas Anymore

• There have been thirty-nine book sequels to The Wizard of Oz, thirteen of them by L. Frank Baum. • The song “Over the Rainbow” was almost edited out of the movie.• Frank Morgan, who played the Wizard, also played Professor Marvel, the Emerald City gatekeeper, the Wizard’s guard, and the cabbie of the Horse of a Different Color carriage.• The movie went through fi ve directors before it was fi nished.• Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the West, was a kindergarten teacher who adored

children. She was severely burned during the special effect where she exits Munchkinland. A trapdoor, obscured by smoke, was supposed to drop her below the stage just before an eruption of fl ames shot up. On the fi rst take, the trapdoor could be seen, so they set off the fl ames a little earlier for the second take, setting her costume on fi re. The fi rst take, with the trapdoor visible, is the one used in the movie.Source: The Essential Book of Useless Information by Don Vorhees, Penguin Publishing.

Bits that BiteBits that BiteA Chihuahua, a German shepherd, and a bulldog are sitting in a park when an attractive collie comes along.

The collie tells them that the one who constructs the best sentence using the words “liver” and “cheese” can take her out.

“I love liver and cheese,” says the German shepherd.

The collie is not impressed.

“I hate liver and cheese,” says the bulldog.

The collie doesn’t think this is very good either.

Finally, the Chihuahua says, “Liver alone. Cheese mine.”
