Hormonal Imbalance in Men By Dr. Greg Fors, DC / Board-certied Neurologist As men pass the age of 40 they can experience hormonal changes that inhibit their physical, sexual, and cognitive function. This process begins to accelerate after the age of 50 and notable symptoms can begin to manifest such as increased abdominal fat, decreased muscle mass, loss of libido, irritability, depression, anxiety, difculty concentrating, decreased facial and leg hair. The underlying metabolic cause of this disorder is too little free testosterone and too much estrogen. Until recently these changes were greeted by a slap on the back and a statement that you were just growing older and not to worry. This left men facing a hormonal imbalance causing a slow degenerative process eventually resulting in premature death. Recent research has amassed data indicating that many of the diseases the aging male experiences, from hypertension to prostate and heart disease are directly related to hormonal imbalances. Research is also showing that proper diet and nutraceutical intervention can correct these hormonal imbalances and reduce the occurrences of these health problems. To men’s detriment conventional doctors are increasingly prescribing multiple drugs to treat the depression, elevated cholesterol, hypertension and many other diseases that may be caused by this underlying hormonal imbalance. It is made worse for the middle-aged male by the fact that very few doctors know what hormonal blood test to order, how to interpret them and what nutraceutical approach to take to reverse imbalances found. -It’s Not Enough to Raise Testosterone- You Have to Set It Free!- Everyone is talking about low testosterone, but it is only testosterone not bound by proteins, called free testosterone that is available to stimulate cell function. It is free testosterone that makes the real difference between abdominal weight gain, decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction and optimal health. Free testosterone is much more than a sex hormone, it assists in controlling blood glucose levels, cholesterol regulation, optimizing cardiac output, improving tissue oxygenation and immune system function and mood regulation. Recent multiple studies have shown that men who suffer with depression have lower levels of free testosterone.. Many of these studies have also shown that elevating free testosterone levels can be an effective antidepressant therapy. -----Actually Too Much Estrogen----- The primary hormonal imbalance in the aging male is not just decreased total and free testosterone but also increased estrogens. Small amounts of estrogen are necessary but as estrogen levels increase they block free testosterone which leads to decreased libido, arousal, and increased abdominal weight gain. One of the primary causes of excess estrogen in the aging male is the action of an enzyme called aromatase. This enzyme primarily found in abdominal fat converts available testosterone into estrogen. Increasing abdominal fat amplies aromatase activity further depleting available testosterone by converting it into ever higher levels of estrogen, thus creating a feed forward cycle. This imbalance of estrogen to free testosterone has been shown to increase the risk of heart attack, benign prostatic hypertrophy along with erectile dysfunction. Research has shown that the inhibition of the aromatase enzyme does result in a signicant decline in estrogen levels while often increasing free testosterone to youthful levels. Therefore, natural aromatase inhibition and the lowering of available estrogen is a primary goal in any Andropause therapy program. Multiple studies have shown that the decline in testosterone levels in males is an escalating problem in todays society. This phenomena is taking place within our modern life not only because of drastic dietary changes but also because of increased exposure to chemical toxins and pesticides in our environment. Maintaining a proper free testosterone to estrogen ratio is essential for men to maintain optimal health and vitality. By combining specic standardized extracts of the botanical Tribulus Terrestris plus pharmaceutical grade DHEA, you can improve testosterone production to enhance vitality, libido and sexual function. Specic Stinging Nettle root extract with Zinc can help to reduce the conversion of testosterone to estrogen and enhance ‘free’ Testosterone levels. Want to know more, attend my FREE SEMINAR! ■ On June 4, 1986, Jonathan Pollard pleads guilty to espionage for selling top-secret U.S. military intelligence information to Israel. The former Navy intelligence analyst sold enough classifi ed documents to fi ll a medium-size room. Pollard was sentenced to life in prison.

Israel has since stuck by Pollard and continues to work toward his release.

■ On June 6, 1949, George Orwell’s novel of a dystopian future, “1984,” is published. “HAIR”-Y FACTSLocks, tresses, curls, mane—no matter what you call it, it’s all about hair! How much do you really know about that mass of protein that adorns your head? Follow along as Tidbits “combs” through a few details about your crowning glory. • Hair is made up almost entirely of the protein keratin, the same ingredient that composes your fi ngernails. Hair color has its source in the cortex of each hair, which contains the pigment melanin. If your hair is dark blond, brown or black, eumelanin

is the dominant pigment, while pheomelanin is the dominant pigment in red hair. Light blond hair results from having very little pigment in hair strands. As we age, melanocyte cells decay, the hair receives less pigment, and we turn gray or white. • Hair is the second-fastest growing tissue in the human body. Only bone marrow grows at a faster rate. We have hair on every surface of our bodies except the soles of our feet, the inside of our hands, and our lips. It also doesn’t grow on mucus membranes.• Folks with black or brown hair have about 110,000 hairs on their head. Blonds average about 140,000, and redheads are in the 90,000 range.• The part of the hair below the skin is called the follicle, while the part you see is the shaft. One follicle grows many hairs over a lifetime, typically about 20 times. You are born with about 1,000 follicles per 0.16 square inch (1.0 square cm).

By the time you’re 25, that fi gure has dropped to around 600. By 40, it’s about 300 or less.• It’s the shape of the follicle that determines how straight or curly your hair is. Straight hair has a round fi ber. Oval and irregularly shaped follicles create wavier or curlier hair. • It takes between 20 and 50 strands of hair for 0.04 inch (1 mm) of thickness. The average person’s hair grows about 4.7 inches (12 cm) a year. • Don’t panic immediately if you think your hair is falling out. It’s perfectly normal to lose about 100 hairs per day. However, a thyroid imbalance or iron defi ciency can cause extreme hair loss, but the good news is that these two conditions are reversible. You’ll have to lose about 50 percent of your hair before it’s noticeable to others.• If you think that you can make your hair grow faster by cutting it, you’re mistaken. Cutting your hair has no effect on the rate of its growth. It does, however, grow faster in warm weather. And no matter what your expensive shampoo advertises, split ends cannot be repaired, but must be cut off. • Your hair will be healthier if your diet includes an abundance of eggs, liver, kidneys, herring, salmon, carrots, green vegetables and all foods rich in vitamins C and D.• We use the word “hair” in a multitude of ways in the English language. If we “let our hair down,” we behave in a more relaxed manner than normal. Giving excessive attention to or arguing about the fi nest details is known as “splitting hairs.” When we’re very irritated or frustrated, we might want to “tear our hair out,” and if we can remain perfectly calm in a stressful situation, we’re able to “not turn a hair.” Folks who over-imbibed and are suffering from a hangover might consume a little “hair of the dog” that bit them as a remedy.

WEIRD PASTIMES(continued)

• Can you talk afterwards? The World Stinging Nettle Challenge is held at The Bottle Inn in Marshwood, Dorset, U.K., every year as part of a charity beer festival. Competitors come from all over the world to see how many nettle leaves they can eat off two stalks in an hour’s time. The bare stalks are measured, and the winner is the one with the greatest accumulated length. It takes skill and endurance to chew and swallow the leaves and not blister the tongue. • You shouldn’t be asleep for this one! Bed Racing is a sport enjoyed by the people of North Yorkshire Town in the United Kingdom who hold the annual Knaresborough Bed Race.

Competitors race beds in teams of six, plus one on the bed. The bed has to run on four wheels and must also fl oat. The race is 1 mile (3 km) long with fi ve up-hill climbs leading to a fi nal challenge of crossing a river.• Ferret Legging is a male-only competition that started in Yorkshire, England, and is now held at the Richmond Highland Games & Celtic Festival in Richmond, Virginia. Men compete with one another by trapping two live ferrets in their pants. The pants must be tied at the ankle and secured at the waist with a belt to prevent the ferrets from escaping. The animals cannot be sedated and must have a full set of teeth. No fi ling or blunting of teeth is allowed. After the ferrets are secure in the trousers, the competitors stand in front of the judges. The winner

is the man who can last the longest. There are two important additional rules to Ferret Legging: The ferrets must have free access from one leg of the trousers to the other, and no underwear can be worn! The current record stands at 5.5 hours.• Witcham in Cambridgeshire, England, hosts an annual Pea Shooting contest where the competition is fi erce! Contestants shoot a pea 12 feet (3.64 m) through a 12-inch (30.48 cm) tube towards a 12-inch (30.48 cm) target. Pea shooting recently moved into the 21st century with laser-guided shooters.• Wife Carrying started in Finland and is now played all over the world. In this race, male competitors run a 278-yard (253.5-m) track with two dry obstacles and one water obstacle while carrying their wife on their back. The fastest time wins. The wife must weigh at least 108 pounds (49 kilograms) and may be carried piggyback,

fi reman’s carry or Estonian style, where the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband’s shoulders, holding onto his waist. The prize is the wife’s weight in beer. • A conker is a nut of the horse chestnut tree. During The World Conker Championships, conkers are threaded onto pieces of knotted string to prevent them from coming off. The aim of the game is to smash your opponent’s conker. Who goes fi rst is decided by a coin toss, and the loser of the toss holds up a hand with the dangling conker on the end of its string. The other player then attempts to hit the dangling conker as hard as he can with his own conker by swinging it over-arm. If he hits it, he gets another go. If he misses or hits the opponent’s knuckles, the play switches, and the receiver gets a crack at his opponent. This continues until one of the conkers is so damaged that it falls off the string.• Big crowds regularly attend the Great Christmas Pudding Race held in London’s Covent Garden’s West Piazza. It is a relay event where teams in fancy dress negotiate a challenging 164-yard (150-meter) obstacle course while carefully balancing a dish of Christmas pudding on a tray. The race supports cancer research in the U.K.• The ancient sport of shin-kicking is part of the annual Cotswold Olimpicks. The goal of shin-kicking is to kick your opponent as hard as you can in the shins. Each time your opponent falls to the ground you earn a point. The winner is the person with the highest score in the best of three rounds. Competitors are encouraged to pad their legs with as much straw as possible. • The World Toe Wrestling Competition started in 1976, and it has made it to the big time in the adult sporting world.

Competitors face each other toe-to-toe across a “toedium,” where they lock their big toes together and try to force their opponent’s foot to the ground. Organizers of the sport applied for its inclusion in the Olympic Games, but it was not accepted.• Extreme Ironing is a dare-devilish sport that combines the dangerous and exciting with the dull and mundane. Participants call themselves “ironists.” They take their ironing board, iron and some wrinkled clothes to extreme places and set to work. Individuals and teams participate in world competitions to set new records for ironing clothes underwater, hanging off cliffs, on top of moving vehicles, even near the top of Mount Everest. Photographs are taken for proof.

MIGHTY MINNESOTANS Alexander Ramsey : elected 2nd governor of Minnesota in 1860 he accomlished a 36% reduction in state spending within 1 year, and whenever possible marched against the succession of the south. When on a vist to Washington he heard about the attack on Fort Sumpter and hastened to the Secretary of War to pledged 1000 men to defend the Union making Minnesota to first state to offer voluntereers. In the Souix uprising of 1862 he put a friend Henry Sibley, also the man he defeated for governorship, in charge of the military forces used to put it down.

Tidbit'ing Your Golf Game (Chipping) Golfers who slice tend to stop their swing right after impact in order to steer the ball. To cure a slice, remove tension from your arms and feel as if the club is turning over as you turn through impact. Instead of stopping, allow the club to flow through the impact zone as you turn your hips and shoulders. Keep your spine angle (the amount you are bent from the hips) constant throughout the swing until you make your follow through, Practice Perfects
