Dialogue 1 :Dependability Lifeina Fast Food RestaurantJesse just arrives at the fast food restaurant for his shift.

Manager: Jesse, Ive been meaning to talk to you. Do you have a second? (Interrupting).

Jesse: Sure Mike, Whats up? (Agreeing).

Manager: Lets go back to the office and sit down before you get into uniform for your shift.

(Suggesting).

Jessie: OK! (Agreeing).

(Jesse thinks to himself that he is really in trouble now but goes back to the managers office

and sits down.)

Manager: I was just doing the payroll for the last pay period and I noticed that you signed in

more than 15 minutes late on 3 out of your last 6 shifts. Are you having a problem getting

here after school? (Interrogating).

Jesse: Well, yes, I have been having some trouble with my math class which is last period

and sometimes I have to stay a few minutes after class to be sure I understand the

homework assignment. That causes me to miss the first bus so I have to wait for the next

one and that is what is causing me to be late. (Explaining)

Manager: Im sorry you are having problems with your math class but you have to

understand that I have a business to run and when you show up late it is an inconvenience

to the other workers who sometimes have to stay overtime until you get here. What do you

suggest we do to try to solve this problem? The bottom line is I need you here and ready to

work when your shift starts. (Giving order).

Jesse: I guess I will just have to forget about math and bust out as soon as the bell rings

so I can make that first bus. Im sorry Ive let you down a few times. I really need this part

time job so I wont let it happen again. (Apologizing).

Dialogue 2 : Conversationbetweentwofriends.

Karim : Hey, Amy, so whats the good news? I came straight away when I got your call,

OK? (Questioning)

Amy : Thanks, Karim. I wanted to tell you that I won. (Informing)

Karim : Won what? O Is it in relation to that Animax Awards you were working on?

(Interrogating)

Amy : Yes, yes, yes! Of all the 400 entries, my manuscript got chosen! (Agreeing)

Karim : Hey, thats great, congratulations! Tell me more! (Congratulate)

Amy : Well, Animax Awards is an anime cable channel. They organized a competition

among all the Asian countries, inviting anime enthusiasts to create and submit a story that

will be turned into an anime. A-1 Pictures, the top Japanese Animation Studios, will develop

that story and broadcast it across Asia. Can you believe it? (Explaining)

Karim : Wow, Amy, that is great! So you are tops for Malaysia, then? (Conforming)

Amy : No, Karim, I am top out of 400 entries from the entire South East Asian region, can

you believe it? (Informing)

Karim : Hey, that is really great, Amy. I remember you telling me that you were staying up

every night trying to write this story. You had to squeeze in every free moment you had,

and yet you could finish all your homework from school. I really salute you. (Imposing)

Amy : Thanks, Karim. (Thankful) Yes, that extra push to write this story was worth it.

Although sometimes I had no fresh inspiration, I am glad I pushed throughand now I will

compete with another eleven finalists from Asia. My parents are so happy for me, too!(Describing)

Karim : Congratulations again, Amy. You are a motivation to the rest of us in the class.

Come lets go to Caf 21 to celebrate! (Suggesting)
