FOREWORD

This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of lndian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Plastics Containers Sectional Committee had been approved by the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.

Th-is stardard was first published in 1972 and was covering the detailed specifications for the retail pack, secondary cartons and transport packages for the packing of solid powder pesticides packed in retail packs of mass not exceeding 500 g. Subsequent to the publication of IS 8190 ( Part 1 ) : 1988 ‘Rcquiremert for packing of pesticides : Part 1 Solid pesticides ( second revision )‘, the requirements of packaging of solid pesticides have been covered in details for both retail packs (up to 1 000 g) and bulk packaging. Hence in this revision, retail packs of 1 000 g are also included. Other requirements have also been updated.

In reporting the result of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised 1’.

1 SCOPE

This standard prescribes requirements for packaging of solid pesticides in the form of powder in retail packs weighing rot more than 1 000 g.

3 REQIJIREMENTS

3.1 Retail Pack

The pesticides in the powder form shall be packed in polyethylene bags having film thickness not less than 0’062 mm and their mouths heat-sealed and then packed in secondary pack individually as detailed in 3.2.

3.1.1 Retail packs for water dispersible powder concentrates like zineb and mancozeb which require extra protection against moisture permeation may be of tri-laminate pouch constituting 50 gsm kraft paper/O’009 mm aluminium foil/O’037 5 mm LDPE/LLDPE, their mouths heat-sealed and then packed in secon- dary pack individually as detailed in 3.2.

3.2 Secondary Pack

Retail packs up to 500 g shall be packed in a carton made from paper board of grammage not less than 190 gsm when tested in accordance

with the method prescribed under 6 ofIS 1060 (Part 1) : 1966.

3.2.1 Secondary packs for 1 000 g packs shall be packed into 3 ply corrugated fibreboard cartons with E flute and of the following ply construction:

3.2.2 The secondary pack shall be closed by firmly gluing overlappirg flaps or by securely closing tuck-in type flaps. It should then be closed by 20 mm wide pressure sensitive plastic/ cello tape or 50 mm paper tape.

3.2.3 The boxes (exterior transport containers) so packed shall be subjected to drop test from a height of I.2 m as per IS 7028 (Part 4) : 1987. The boxes shall not show anv sign of damage or shifting of powder from it. ’

3.3 Transport Pack

Ca.rtans as in 3.2 shall be corrugated fibreboard box or the purpose of transport and corrugated fibrebord box and conform to 3.3.1 and 3.3.2.

3.3.1 Corrugated Fibreboard Box

3.3.1.1 The box shall be made from 5 ply corrugated fibreboard (A or B flute) conforming to IS 2771 (Part 1) : 1977 and style 202 of IS 6481 : 1971.

3.3.1.2 The grammage of the liner and corrugat- ed-medium of the board shall not be less than 150 gsm when tested in accordance with the method prescribed under 6 of IS 1060 (Part 1) : 1966.

3.3.1.3 The gross mass of corrugated fibreboard box with the contents shall not exceed 30 kg.

3.3.1.4 The bursting strength of the corrugated fibreboard box when tested in accordance with the method prescribed under 12.5 of IS 1060 (Part 1) : 1966 shall not be less than 12 kgf/cm*.

3.3.2 Wooden Case

3.3.2.1 The wooden packing case shall conform to the class and style specified in IS 1503 : 1988 appropriate to the mass of contents as in 3.3.2.2.

3.3.2.2 The gross mass of the wooden case with the contents shall not exceed 35 kg.

4 CLOSING OF THE TRANSPORT PACK

4.1 Corrugated Fibreboard Box

The corrugated fibreboard box shall be closed either by gluing or by stapling. The lines of meet of the outer flaps shall be sealed by 50 mm wide glued paper tape or 50 mm wide plastic/ cellotape.

4.2 Wooden Case

The top of the case shall be fixed by nailing

to the ends of the case. The nails shall be not more than 75 mm apart. The case shall finally be reinforced by 2 numbers of mild steel straps along the girth. Strappings made of plastics (PP, nylon or polyester, etc) may also b: used.

5 PACKING AND MARKING

Each bag and carton shall be packed and marked inaccordance with the provisions made under Chanter V ‘Packine. and Labellinu’ of the Cenbal Insecticides “Rules, 1971 framed under the powers of Central Insecticides Act, 1968.

Standard Mark

The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the pro- ducer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BI-S for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
