Use this guide to replace your iPhone's display assembly. Replacing the display assembly will giveyou a new front glass panel, digitizer, and LCD. The LCD is adhered to the glass at the factory andthe two parts are not separable without damage.

Step 1 — Rear Panel

Before disassembling your iPhone,be sure it is powered off.

Remove the two 3.6 mm Phillips screwsnext to the dock connector.Apple has recently substituted thetwo Phillips screws with 5-Point"Pentalobe" screws. If your iPhone4 has 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws insteadof Phillips, please refer to the secondpicture.Remove the two 3.6 mm Pentalobe screwsnext to the dock connector.During reassembly, we recommendyou replace the 5-point screws withequivalent Phillips screws. OurLiberation Kit provides the tools and screwsneeded to replace the Pentalobe screwswith Phillips screws.The 5-Point Screwdriver shouldonly be used once, as it has thepotential to strip the screws.

Push the rear panel toward the top edge ofthe iPhone.The panel will move about 2 mm.

Lift the rear panel away from the iPhone.

Remove the single 2.5 mm Phillips screwsecuring the battery connector to the logicboard.

Use an iPod opening tool to carefully prythe battery connector up from the endsclosest to the top and bottom edges of theiPhone.Do not pry against the contact clip.

Remove the contact clip from the iPhone.



Step 6Use the clear plastic pull tab to gently liftthe battery out of the iPhone.Be careful when removing the battery withthe plastic pull tab. On some units, Appleuses an excessive amount of glue, makingit virtually impossible to remove the batteryin this fashion (with the tab possibly tearingdue to excessive force).For batteries that "stick", you could use theiPod opening tool to assist (take extra carewhilst doing so).Remove the battery.Before reconnecting the batteryconnector, be sure the pressurecontact (shown in red) is properlypositioned next to the battery connector.Before reassembly, be sure to cleanall metal-to-metal contact points onthe pressure contact as well as itscontact point on the rear panel with a de-greaser such as windex. The oils on yourfingers have the potential to cause wirelessinterference issues.

Use a SIM card eject tool or a paperclip toeject the SIM card and its holder.This may require a significantamount of force.

Remove the SIM card and its holder.

Remove the following two screws:One 1.2 mm PhillipsOne 1.6 mm Phillips

Remove the thin steel dock connectorcable cover from the iPhone.Before reassembly, be sure to cleanall metal-to-metal contact points onthe dock connector cable cover witha de-greaser such as windex. The oils onyour fingers have the potential to causewireless interference issues.

Use an iPod opening tool to gently pry thedock cable connector up off the logic boardfrom both short ends of the connector.

Carefully peel the dock ribbon cable off thelogic board and the lower speakerenclosure.

Use an iPod opening tool to pry the lowerantenna connector up off its socket on thelogic board.Make sure you don't damage the blueinductor while prying the antennaconnector. If you end up having no servicemessage, double check that the blueinductor is still there and soldered properly

Remove the 1.9 mm Phillips screwsecuring the bottom of the logic board to theinner case.



Step 13Remove the following five screws securingthe wi-fi antenna to to the logic board:

One 2.3 mm PhillipsTwo 1.6 mm PhillipsOne 1.4 mm PhillipsOne 4.8 mm Phillips

When re-assembling, start off withreplacing the 4.8 mm Philips screwfirst, then the 2.3 mm. This is toensure there is no mix-up, and avoidrendering the LCD and digitizer useless.Also make sure to put the long 4.8mm Philips back in correctly whenreassembling. This is the ground forthe Wi-Fi antenna and is often the culprit ifyou are having bad wi-fi reception afterreassembly.

Use an iPod opening tool to slightly lift thetop edge of the wi-fi antenna away from thelogic board.Use the tip of a spudger to pull the wi-firetaining clips away from the inner frame.Remove the wi-fi antenna from the iPhone.Make sure you don't lose the metal clips onthe top of the cover where the 4.8mm screwattaches or the 4.8mm screw. That's theprimary reason for abnormal Wi-Fiperformance after the reassembly.Before reassembly, be sure to cleanall metal-to-metal contact points onthe connector cover with a de-greaser such as Windex. The oils on yourfingers have the potential to cause wirelessinterference issues. Do not clean theconnectors themselves with Windex.

Use an iPod opening tool to carefully lift therear camera connector up off its socket onthe logic board.Remove the rear camera.

Remove the small circular white sticker(warranty sticker and water indicator)covering the screw near the battery pull tab.Remove the 2.4 mm Phillips screw that washidden underneath the sticker.

Disconnect the following connectors fromthe top of the logic board:

Digitizer cable (From Bottom)LCD cable (From Bottom)Headphone jack/volume button cable(From Top)Top Microphone/sleep button cable(From Top)Front camera cable (From Top)

It is helpful to use the edge of aniPod opening tool to gently lift theconnectors up and out of theirsockets on the logic board.

Use a small flathead screwdriver to removethe 4.8 mm standoff near the headphonejack.

Step 20 — Speaker EnclosureAssembly

Carefully remove the logic board from theiPhone, minding any cables that may getcaught.Note that there is a rubber guard onthe edge of the logic board wherethe Digitizer and LCD ribbon cablesbend over the logic board. Make certain it isthere before replacing the logic boardduring reassembly.

Remove the single 2.4 mm Phillips screwsecuring the speaker enclosure to the sideof the inner frame.

Step 22 — Display Assembly

Remove the speaker enclosure from theiPhone.Before re-fastening the speakerenclosure to the inner frame, besure the four small EMI fingers restbelow the lip of the LCD frame.Before reassembly, be sure to cleanall metal-to-metal contact pointsbetween the EMI fingers and theinternal frame as well as the brass screwmounting point with a de-greaser such asWindex. The oils on your fingers have thepotential to cause wireless interferenceissues.

Remove the following two screws securingthe vibrator to the inner frame:

One 6 mm PhillipsOne 1.4 mm Phillips

Remove the vibrator from the iPhone.

Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screwsecuring the front panel near theheadphone jack.

Remove the three large-headed 1.5 mmPhillips screws along the volume buttonside of the iPhone.Keep track of the washers undereach of the screws.

Tip: It can be tricky, but it is alsopossible to just loosen the large-headed 1.5 mm Phillips screwsslightly, without having to remove andreplace the screw-and-washer set.

Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screw near thelower microphone.

Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screw near thedock connector ribbon cable.

Remove the three large-headed 1.5 mmPhillips screws along the SIM card side ofthe iPhone.Keep track of the washers undereach of the screws.

Tip: It can be tricky, but it is alsopossible to just loosen the large-headed 1.5 mm Phillips screwsslightly, without having to remove andreplace the screw-and-washer set.Remove the small-headed 1.5 mm Phillipsscrew near the sleep button.

Carefully insert the edge of an iPodopening tool between the rubber bezelaround the front glass panel and the steelinner frame.Do not attempt to insert the toolbetween the glass and the rubberbezel.Carefully pry the upper edge of the frontpanel assembly away from the steel innerframe.

Slowly and gently lift the top edge of thefront panel assembly away from the steelinner frame.Continue to rotate the front panel assemblyaway from the steel inner frame until itslowly begins to peel off the adhesiveapplied below the home button area.Carefully pull the lower edge of the frontpanel assembly away from the steel innerframe.Be careful, if the home button sticksto the front panel you may tear thehome button cable.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

De-route the digitizer and LCD cablesthrough the steel inner frame.Before re-fastening the front panelto the steel inner frame, be sureboth the LCD and digitizer cablesare not folded or pinched between the innerframe and the front panel assembly. Thiswill result in possibly damaging the cablesand not having enough slack whenreconnecting them to the logic board.When the front panel has beencorrectly installed both the LCD anddigitizer cables should beimmediately next to one another andshould be the same length and should bejust hanging over the steel frame.When replacing the front panelassembly you must remember thatyou might have to reuse theearpiece grille and the clear plastic ringaround the front facing camera from theold/damaged assembly. This will dependon where you buy the replacement part.
