UNIVERSITY OF WEST ATTICA

Dear Distinguished Guests!

Welcome in Greece, welcome to the University of West At-tica (UniWA).

The merging of two Higher Education Institutions (Athens University of Applied Sciences and Piraeus University of Applied Sciences) resulted in the establishment of our Uni-versity in March 2018. Consequently, although UniWA is new, it incorporates the tradition and the high quality level of the past.

On this occasion, the University of West Attica organizes the 2nd Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Week 2019. UniWA is very much oriented towards international coop-eration. The exchange of staff and students strengthens the open character of the University and promises more intensive international activities in the future.

The Erasmus+ program of the European Union offers a great opportunity for the development of academic and cultural ties between Universities from many countries for the benefit of the exchange of the expertise and knowl-edge.

I wish you a successful participation in the 2nd Erasmus+ ICM Week and hope that it will give an important encour-agement for the continuation and the enhancement of our cooperation.

Prof. Constantinos Moutzouris Rector

Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

The University of West Attica is very active on the interna-tional level and the first University in Greece according to the degree of use of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mo-bility (ICM) program. We maintain many bilateral programs with Universities from more than 40 non-EU countries all over the world. We believe that the international coopera-tion gives us the opportunity to exchange experience, ex-pertise and knowledge for the benefit of our students and our countries.

The completion of three academic years of the Erasmus+/ICM program in our University gave us the opportunity to publish the present brochure and organize the 2nd Eras-mus+ International Credit Mobility Week 2019. We believe that this event is a major networking event, bringing in contact the representatives of Universities from partner countries with our staff and each other and consider it as a boost to our cooperation and enhancement of its sustain-ability. Moreover, it supports our international cooperation to be more effective and with better results in common research activities, exchange of students and staff etc.

I hope that you will enjoy our hospitality and I wish you a fruitful participation in the 2nd Erasmus+ ICM Week 2019, as well as a pleasant stay in Athens.

Prof. Savvas Vassiliadis Erasmus Institutional Coordinator

UniWA maintains strong research activities mainly carried out in more than 50 Research Labs. Many national and international research programs are the tools for the research cooperation with other Laboratories, Universities and Research Institutes.UniWA cooperates with other educational and research institutions and par-ticipates in several European Union programs with other Universities to: (a) constantly improve its academic level; (b) build international cooperation and sharing of knowledge and(c) reach its goals. Several mainly EU research programs are run in collaboration with Higher Edu-cation Institutions of EU, a lot of nation-al education programs and three main ERASMUS+ / KA1 – Learning Mobility of Individuals programs.Regular buses connect UniWA with the centers of Athens and Piraeus. Bus lines connect the metro station “Εgaleo” to UniWA (2 km away from each campus). The two campuses include several buildings with the equivalent of space 100.000m2, among them the Conference Centers, Libraries, IT Centers and facilities that cover all students’ needs and support academic activities.

| 6 | Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility

For 30 years, the European Union has funded the Erasmus programme which has enabled over 4 million European students to spend part of their studies in another Higher Education institution (HEI) in Europe. Erasmus+ is the EU funding program for education, training, youth and

sport 2014-2020. Erasmus+ combines previous funding programmes in the sector, including the Lifelong Learning Programme (Comenius, Leonardo,

Erasmus, Grundtvig and Transversal Programmes), Youth in Action and five inter-national cooperation programmes (Erasmus Mundus, Tempus, Alfa, Edulink and the programme for cooperation with industrialised countries). In 2015, Erasmus+ opened up these opportunities to individuals and organizations from other parts of the world. Through the Erasmus+ "International Credit Mobili-ty (ICM)" action, European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can set up mobility agreements with partners around the world, to send and receive students and staff. Erasmus+ ICM supports the mobility of individuals enrolled or employed at a HEI from a Programme Country to a Partner Country or vice versa for:

1. Student Mobility for Studies2. Student Mobility for Traineeships3. Staff Mobility for Teaching4. Staff Mobility for Training

A European HEI, which takes part at the Erasmus+ ICM programme, aims in general at increasing its capacities, at-tractiveness and internationalization strategies. It is a great opportunity for partners to increase their visibility not only on a local, but also on a global scale.

On a personal level, Erasmus+ ICM helps the participants to acquire key skills and new competences, improves their language level, boosts their employability, supports their personal and professional development and deepens their under-standing of other cultures. Most Erasmus+ ICM participants consider their mobili-ty period as a one in a lifetime experience.

At the end of July of 2019, the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) pro-gramme completes 3 academic years of success, running in the University of West Attica (Athens and Piraeus University of Applied Sciences). Especially, its last two proposals gave to UniWA the 1st place by far between the Higher Education Insti-tutions (HEIs) in Greece according to the approved number of mobilities.More specifically, UniWA received EU grants for more than 800 incoming and out-going mobilies covering more than 70 signed Inter-Institutional Agreements with Universities of more than 40 non-EU countries by achieving absorption of more than 90%. During this period, UniWA (former Piraeus University of Applied Sciences) had the privilege to organize two Erasmus+/International Credit Mobility Weeks. The 1st one took place in October 2017 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus Program. The 2nd one is organized in May 2019 on the occasion that HEIs (A.U.A.S. and P.U.A.S) merged into the University of West Attica. During this event, more than 100 members of academic and administrative staff from different Universities of non-EU countries will participate. In the next pages, one could find the list of the Partner countries as well as the HIEs, which collaborate with UniWA under the framework of Erasmus+ ICM programme.

The Erasmus Students Network (ESN) West Attica is a non-profit organization composed by voluntary members that started its activity with the Erasmus stu-dents in September 2018, after the merge of TEI of Piraeus and TEI of Athens. The aim of the organization  is to improve the mobility-experience of all the ex-change students studying in our city. Our main objectives are to ensure that every Erasmus student coming for an ex-change is warmly welcomed, receives all the information needed and gets rapidly involved in the local student life.To achieve these goals, various cultural and social activities such as trips, movie nights, sports activities, parties and many more are organized. What is more, the Buddy System is set up, matching every incoming student with a local one, in order to provide help not only on an academic, but also on a practical level.  In addition to this, ESN West Attica is also here to provide help to the local students of University of West Attica, who are willing to go on exchange, by providing all the necessary information and by guiding them through the procedure.

UNIVERSITI TUNKU ABDUL RAHMANAs a junior researcher, I had a very good experience during my visit to University of West Attica (UniWA) un-der the Erasmus+/ ICM programme. During this visit, the UTAR team discussed a lot on potential collabo-rations, including teaching, student exchange and re-search projects. One of my Master students participat-ed at the Erasmus+ mobility programme for 3 months, which was a great opportunity for exposure to him.

After our visit, both universities had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to extend the collaboration beyond staff exchange. In conclusion, we would like to thank Erasmus+ programme for giving us a chance to build a long-term collaboration relationship with UniWA.

Najib HAMOUTI

ECOLE SUPÉRIEURE DES INDUSTRIES DU TEXTILE ET DE L’HABILLEMENTI would like to thank the wonderful Erasmus+ team and all the professors who welcomed us, my colleague Prof. Cherkaoui and myself, during our Training mobility in Athens. The mobility was very productive both pro-fessionally and culturally speaking. I would like to pay a special tribute to Ms. Fani Papoutsi and Prof. Kon-stantinos – Stefanos Nikas for their availability and patience. As a newly appointed Erasmus+ coordinator, I was able to learn the fundamental principles of managing the Erasmus+ projects and I returned fully equipped with the necessary know-how and understanding of the job. Three months after this mobility our Home University was able to be concluded in two more Erasmus+ Agreements.

As a part of the International relations Office, this mobility was of great importance. It allowed me to learn the best practices in handling student and staff mobility. My mobility was from the 2nd of December to the 8th of December. The administrative staff at the Erasmus+ Office in University of

West Attica was very helpful and shared with me all the nec-essary information that would allow me to do my job the best way possible and be able to transfer what I learned, during my training, to my university. The experience was more than a training, it was also a cultural exchange. It allowed me to learn a new way of life. This experience had a great impact on me because I traveled during the Christmas period, and I got to witness all the Christmas preparations and I really felt the Christmas spirit. Thanks to everyone at the Erasmus Office I got the chance to decorate my first Christmas tree. I would like to thank the Erasmus+ Office for all the efforts and the great work they are doing.

PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITYThe Erasmus+ program provided me an excellent opportunity to interact with faculty and students from Greece and elsewhere. Visiting University of West Attica gave me a chance to identify common themes and issues associated with textile education and to identify possibilities for future collaboration between our institutions. My academic host, Dr. Geor-gios Priniotakis, was welcoming and made me feel a part of the organization. We had many deep conversations throughout the stay and have forged a relationship that will last for many years. From the Erasmus+ office, Ms. Fani Papoutsi was exceptionally adept at ensuring everything went according to plan and made the process easy and pleasant.Through the Erasmus+ program, I was able to have conversations with colleagues from around the world to brainstorm new ideas in the educational and research arenas that will lead to improvements. I am excited about the future possibilities now that we have come to know each other.

Such events give teachers the oppor-tunity to meet with colleagues from other countries, including from Russian universities. During my visit at our partner university, I detected a number of advantages in studying at University of West Attica. This was an opportunity to gain new knowledge and acquire new competencies in a good European university, to get acquainted with the European education system. Moreover, it is a great chance to expand my knowledge about the world as a whole, about the European economy and get to know European culture closely - Athens, where the University of West Attica is located - the source of European culture and democracy.

Erasmus+/ ICM programme at University of West Attica has helped participants, both students and staff members, at all stages of their lives. For students, Erasmus+ is a great opportunity to gain valuable life-skills and international experience, to help them develop

personally, professionally and academically and to succeed in today's world. Also, it helps them to pursue stimulating opportunities for learning across Europe, both inside and outside of the classroom, to boost their skills and employability, to develop their cultural awareness and open-mindedness, to enhance self-confidence, and finally to improve their language skills. For staff participants, Erasmus+ enabled them to develop new skills, to get to know di-rectly the mechanisms of another European educational system, learn and share new ideas and explore best practices to take back to Uzbekistan. Moreover, it was a great way to get inspired from new colleagues and refresh their thinking, returning from their mobility enthused and motivated.Thank you for Erasmus+ ICM and host university!

ALEXANDRIA UNIVESITYFirst of all, I would like to thank my colleague and

friend Dr. Stefania Chlouveraki to have me involved with the Erasmus+ program, and to express my gratitude to all the Erasmus+ team who helped and facilitated all the pa-per work during my mobilities at the wonderful University of West Attica. All of my visits at the University of West Attica were very

successful because our collaboration through the Erasmus+ program has been further expanded by sending and receiving both students and staff members at both institu-tions. Also, we hope that we will be able to run a joint degree between the Faculties of Conservation as a result of this initial collaboration. I am glad that I have the change through this program to share my experiences with colleagues and students. All I can say is that I am considering Greece as my second home. Erasmus+ / ICM programme allows us to extend our fruitful cooperation program and the continuation with our colleagues through Erasmus+ is an indication of its great success. Thank you Erasmus+ and the team who helped for that.

TAJIK TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, TAJIKISTANIn the frame of the Erasmus+/ International Credit mobility program, I had the opportunity to visit the Tajik Technical University of Tajikistan in May 2018, where I received a warm welcome. The purpose of the mobility was to teach energy issues not only to students but also to teaching staff. During my stay in Tajikistan, I also visited the Tajik Power University in Kurgan-Tupe, where I gave a lecture on energy issues. Then a friendly and constructive discussion was held on the opportunities for educa-tional and research cooperation between the two universities. The reward I received from this mobility was the joy to share with them their education-al and research concerns and their great interest in acquiring new knowledge. Several teachers, as well as students, were interested in getting information about the possi-bilities offered by the Erasmus+ program to visit our University. The Erasmus+ office of their university has informed them in detail, and there are several professors and students who are candidates for a study visit to our University in Greece.

ALEXANDRIA UNIVESITY, EGYPTLooking back on my first visit to Alexandria Egypt last year, what comes to my mind is the warm hospi-tality of our Egyptian colleagues and all their efforts to introduce to me their academic program and as many aspects of their culture and life as possible. My colleague from the faculty of Fine Arts of the Uni-versity of Alexandria, Safaa Abdel Salam, and the two students Hanan and Shrouk, who had just returned from Athens, had perfectly orga-nized my lectures in Alexandria as well as visits and walks in the city. The students of the faculty, who I have come to call my Egyptian students, are very smart, but shy young people, who just need an opportunity and the encouragement to come out of their shell, to travel and expand their knowledge and experience, and this is exactly what the Eras-mus+ program could offer to them. The students and professors never stopped thank-ing me for these opportunities and the hospitality and assistance, which they received from our Erasmus+ Office and the ESN. In return, they offered me an unforgettable and fruitful experience in Alexandria, which opened new prospects for collaboration in the area of arts and culture.

ERASMUS+/ ICM in Moscow, Russia. My Erasmus+ experience to Moscow at HSE – MIEM was a great challenge in a great country with many pioneer sci-entists in Science and Engineering. It was a combina-tion of culture, education and research opportunities. Apart from the task of teaching in a multicultural en-

vironment, as the Universities host Russian-speaking students from neighbor coun-tries, the visiting staff member has the opportunity to learn about their culture, music and the major activities of their everyday life. A unique opportunity to visit Duma, the Kremlin and to be introduced to the treasures and scientific improvement of the Rus-sian Federation. All staff is very friendly with high appreciation to the Greek civilization and culture. A unique experience for the participants from both sides, with excellent students who try to grasp everything the tutor provides them. This obliges us to be-come better and try with “pathos”, to maintain in a very high level the collaboration. Unforgettable life experiences!

Erasmus+ changing lives, opening minds!!! Enhancing in-ternational cooperation! Unlimited opportunities! Last May, myself, as the Coordinator of Career, Liaison and Innova-tion Office and colleagues from Piraeus University of Ap-plied Sciences visited the Armenian National Agrarian Uni-

versity under the framework of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility program. My participation to the program, in general, has broaden my personal-profession-al-cultural horizons, and it was a great chance to exchange know-how and good practices for the Career Offices. It was also a great opportunity to build mutual un-derstanding in the related topics, to gain a greater understanding of the cultural and political influences in Armenian society and enjoy a first-hand experience of Armenia, its people and its culture, to build partnerships. I’m really enthusiastic with the participation in the specific program since I got the chance to experience directly the wonderful Armenian hospitality and culture, Arme-nian architecture, music, the Yerevan city, explored worldwide opportunities for higher education! It was a very fruitful week.

TASHKENT INSTITUTE OF TEXTILE & LIGHT INDUSTRYIf I would have any other chance to participate at an Eras-mus+ exchange program at UniWA again, I would definitely go without any doubts. What I really enjoyed during my stay in Ath-ens was the beautiful weather and of course the seaside. Be-ing an Erasmus+ student at UniWA (former PUAS) was a great experience for me. I met a lot of interesting people, which were friendly. Up to now, we keep in touch through social media. The staff of the students’ restaurant was always helpful and I am glad that I had the chance to taste the typical Greek cuisine. Before my visit and during my stay at UniWA I did not face any bureaucratic difficulties because of the activities of skilled staff of the Erasmus+ office (Gabriela, Fani and Irene) who were led by prof. Konstantinos Nikas. All of them were easily solving any challenges I faced there during my training period. Part of my PhD research work was done at UniWA during my Erasmus+ mobility and with the assistance of highly skilled professors and colleagues there. Ευχαριστώ πολυ! (Thank you very much in Greek)

Mammad JABRAYILOVBAKU HIGHER OIL SCHOOLIt is a great pleasure to express the best experience in my life. I have been part of the Erasmus+ exchange program twice. My first exchange semester was a regular study semester. My friend Rahim and I were the first exchange students between the aforementioned universities. Although it was our first educational ex-perience abroad, Prof. Nikas, Prof. Yannakopoulos and all Erasmus+ office workers helped a lot to make us easily adapt. My second ex-perience was related to my bachelor thesis. I did my thesis under the supervision of Prof. Patrikakis. With this experience, I enriched my knowledge on how to do research that has helped me a lot during my current master education.During my mobilities, I got the chance to get familiar with the Greek culture. First of all, the people in Greece are very friendly and hospitable. In terms of culture, I loved Greek tavernas where I could listen to Greek music and dance traditional Greek dances and taste delicious Greek cuisine, which has a wide variety. I am thankful to all my professors, other academic staff and friends that made both of my Erasmus experiences unforgettable.

UNIVERSITY OF WITWATERSRANDIt was a great honour and privilege to be nominated for the

Erasmus+ program. The nomination came at a time when I tru-ly needed it; I was a PhD student yearning for a collaboration that would enable me to carry out particular experiments needed to complete my studies in South Africa. When I arrived at the airport I was welcomed by my Erasmus+

buddy, Anna, who made sure that I got safely to my room in Victoria, Athens. She was kind-hearted and very helpful during my stay in Athens. I carried out my experiment with Dr. Theodoros Gkanetsos, a very humble and quite knowledgeable professor. The exper-iment was a great success and from it, we managed to author two publications, currently under review. Of great help was a team of dedicated Erasmus+ staff including Gabriela, Irene, Fani, and Julien among others. They were quite helpful and always very concerned about my well-being. I will not forget the hospitality of the Greeks, their delicious food and their love for life. The Erasmus+ program brings together young, enthusiastic and active students with varied background and out of the lab, I had the best opportunity to interact, learn and freely share experiences with different cultures and traditions. I left Greece a better, knowledgeable person from these interactions. Long live Erasmus+ programme.

OF ECONOMICS & SERVICEInternship at the University of West Attica is a bright experi-

ence! Everything happened unexpectedly. The teachers offered to take part in the program, I passed a screening interview and began to prepare documents. Firstly, the training is conducted in English, and this is always an excellent practice of the spoken language. We were taught all disciplines in English, which helped me master business terminology. Usually we had a one-to-one lesson with the professors

and we had enough time to discuss any questions that may arise. Taking part in the Erasmus+ program is an excellent chance to get a vivid life experience, to get acquainted with different aspects of the culture of other countries, such as language, fashion, architecture, student life. Moreover, during my mobility, I talked a lot with students from Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Spain, France, and Poland. Very interesting, bright people, ready to share emotions, interesting stories, practical experience. With many of them, we now communicate in social networks. I only have great memories from this trip. It was all like a process, like a big fairy tale. In addition to interesting activities, we had cultural events, nature trips, hiking with tents, gala dinners.

ADA UNIVERSITY, AZERBAIJANMy time in Baku was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. I have been there only for one academic semester, in ADA University. Despite the short period of my mobility, it was enough to make strong friendships, meet people from all over the world, exchange ideas, and create beautiful memories and to truly evolve myself.Academically, ADA University was the best choice I could have done. It offers a high-quality program of studies, through which I had the chance to develop my skills and discover new ones. I also really enjoyed being at the university, the facilities of the campus were impressive and modern.I cannot describe how much I loved my staying and my studies in Azerbaijan. I would defi-nitely recommend it as a choice for the Erasmus+ program! Apparently, adapting yourself in a new culture is not easy but Baku is the best place to do so. It is an awesome, contem-porary, vibrant and safe town with kind and generous people. It is a place that will reward those who are willing to love it!

Aristo PLAKA

HSE MOSCOW INSTITUTE OF ELECTRONICS & MATHEMATICS, RUSSIAN FEDERATIONI would have never imagined that my Erasmus+ mobility from Athens to Moscow would have been such a perfect experience. Even though I didn’t speak Russian, every-thing turned out to be nice as the people at the Univer-sity and the dorm were very friendly and welcomed me warmly. Academically, I entered a high-level educational system where my classmates helped me a lot and they were very keen on meeting me and assisting me throughout my mobility. In addition, the professors were extremely assistive and we interacted almost daily. Apart from the studies, the most memorable things were the friends and the trips I made. Those two contributed in making this period the most exciting in my whole life. I encounter those friends as a multi-cultural family now. All that travelling opened my mind and I also made a dream come true, the Trans-Siberian trip. After my return to my hometown, I encounter myself as a more mature, open-minded and developed person both professionally and personally. P.S.: Still missing my family and our home (Dormitory No.4), still missing Moscow!

YARMOUK UNIVERSITY, JORDANWhen we learnt that we would have the opportu-

nity to travel to Jordan for an Erasmus+ exchange program, we were both very excited with the idea of visiting a country outside Europe, of which we had no clue about the way of life and the people. Jordan turned out to be an amazing place with very beautiful

sites and sceneries to discover. Thanks to the kindness of all the people we met, we felt right away, as if we were at home. Our exchange program’s focus was on the practical work for our thesis re-search on an archaeological site, so we were spending most of our days working with the locals. We increased our knowledge on practical matters that concern our field of studies and gained a lot of professional experience. Another interesting thing is that we had the chance to learn a new very interesting language (Arabic). The most important thing of our journey though, was that the people we met there became our family. We are still in touch and thanks to them we discovered their cul-ture and way of life.

We were selected to study through the Eras-mus+/ ICM program at Voronezh, Russia. When we first arrived, everything was covered with snow. Eventhough we thought that we were go-ing to face problems in the communication, ev-erything turned out well. Everyone at the univer-sity was very helpful and we immediately joined the buddy club, which is a club run by Russian students to help foreign students. First weeks

went by and we did not even realized how fast we were learning basic phrases and able to communicate with the locals. At the university, the classes were very interesting, the teachers very nice and helpful, and different methods of teaching that we saw compared to ours led up to an amazing experience that we will never forget! We met amazing people not only from Russia but also from all over the world and we made some international friends that we still are in touch.
