Introducing some of our specialist teachers
more to come next term Brendan Thompson – This is my eighth year at KPS. Currently, I’m teaching ICT to the Grade 3-6’s. I also work with the Singing Group, Rockband and KPS TV Show. I love spending time with my wife and our two children, Lucas and Sam. In my spare time I really enjoy playing/watching soccer and basketball, playing guitar, bass and drums and restoring my 1970s Holden. I’m looking forward to the amazing things that we will be learning about in ICT, such as coding and robotics!
Nathan Babic - This is my first year at KPS and I am teaching P.E. My hobbies include playing and watching the footy, following all kinds of sports such as basketball, cricket and soccer. I am a huge Richmond and New York Knicks supporter. I also love spending time with family and friends. I have enjoyed getting to know the students and parents in the KPS Community and I am looking forward to seeing the development of P.E at KPS.
Hi, I’m Andrea Lewis. I currently teach art both here and at Upper Plenty Primary School. I love my role as a visual arts teacher. Mostly I love watching the way the students express themselves through their artwork. As well as teaching, I am currently completing a Masters in Art Therapy at LaTrobe University. In my spare time I love discovering new art in the city laneways, going to galleries, the theatre, the football and spending time with my family and friends.
Hola de Nelly Molina! This is my fourth year teaching Spanish at Kilmore PS. I really enjoy being able to share not only my language but also my culture with so many young children throughout our lessons. I love watching to see how at the end of each term children realise how much they know about the Spanish language and how much it really is around us. Cooking, Latin dancing and ‘roller skating’ are my hobbies. You will always be ‘Bienvenido/Welcome’ to visit our classroom. Hasta

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Can you believe that this is the last week of term one? What a busy, productive and exciting term it has been.
Last Thursday we had a visit from Gill Callister, Secretary for Education. It was a wonderful opportunity for our school to showcase the work that is being done here and discuss the supports and services that are being provided by the Department to assist in the work that schools do each day. Our student leaders did an exceptional job as ambassadors, leading a rigorous conversation about life as a KPS student and providing an informative guided tour to the Secretary. I received an email on Monday from Ms Callister. This is how she described our student leaders…
“I was so impressed with your School Captains and Deputy School Captains. Their leadership, not just during the tour of the school, but also through their articulate and thoughtful explanation of Kilmore Primary School's learning model, was nothing short of exceptional.” Ms Gill Callister.
We have had some concerns raised by parents who have seen several cars drive into the staff carpark on Lancefield Rd in the morning to drop off children. The cars drop off children and then back onto Lancefield Rd . This is extremely dangerous and illegal. Please refrain from doing this as we would hate to see any family come to harm. The police do patrol the school to ensure that everyone is using the roads safely before and after school at times so please do the right thing.
A huge thank you to our FAF of KPS fundraising group for your work this term. It culminated in the Bunnings BBQ and Easter raffle this week. I have put the 2018 fundraising targets items in the newsletter so that you can see what your funds are being used to purchase. So far the fundraising has paid for the new numeracy trolleys and some of the literacy units. Well done and thank you!
Have a wonderful Easter break and enjoy the school holidays. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to KPS. See you in term two!

Being on Time Matters At Kilmore Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of a great education begin with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days and being late to school can have a big impact on a child’s future – missing one day a fortnight a student will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.
The table above shows the number of students late to school each day last week. Unfortunately, we still have many students coming late to school.
Help your class win the next Being on Time Matters award by arriving at school on time! Look out for the Everyday Counts page in this newsletter for information on school
attendance.

Thank you to all our families who contributed to the Woolworths Earn & Learn program in 2018. Our Foundation students are very excited to have received new equipment for their area. The introduction of the dress ups will encourage creativity, imagination, perseverance and development of language and social skills. Role play inspires drama, creativity, and imagination in character development and storytelling. Thank You!!!

This week, small groups of students from Grades 3 – 6 participated in student forums. Working in teams, students discussed two key questions; ‘What helps you learn maths at KPS?’ and ‘What hinders your learning?’ Inviting students to reflect upon their learning, share their perspectives, thoughts and suggestions is part of our commitment to increasing ‘student voice’ at KPS. We will share some student reflections in coming newsletters
Our Grade 5/6 students have been collecting,
representing, comparing, interpreting and
analysing different sets of data. Grade 6
students investigated enrolment numbers at
three local primary schools over a period of
time. Grade 5 students collected data on the
colours of cars travelling along Lancefield Road
and Conway Street at different times in the day.
Last Week’s Talking Point…
Over the past couple of weeks, there were two ‘special’ dates. The first date was 15.3.18 and the second
was 21.3.18. Did you work out why they were special? 15 + 3 = 18 and 21 – 3 = 18.
Hello everyone! Can you believe
that this is the last
week of Term 1?
Some of my
highlights have
been visiting every
classroom, finding
an apple core,
spending time in
the yard, finding
some popcorn,
listening to stories,
finding a ball,
getting lots of pats,
finding a chip and
hanging out with
everyone. I can’t
wait to do it all
again next term!
Above: Have you
seen the fruit trees
growing on the
Lancefield Road side
of the school? The
Gardening Club does a
wonderful job looking
after them. You might
remember that last
year we could buy a
little plaque to help
support the purchase
of the trees. This
week, I checked out
my special tree with
some of my friends. It
was easy to find
because it’s got my
name on it! If you
bought a plaque there
will be a tree with
your name on it too!
Above: Two of my Grade 3/4
friends were reading a book
when suddenly they came
across a warning (right) on the
first page. They rushed straight
to my office to give me the
book, ‘The Dog’s Guide to Hu-
mans’. Thankfully, they acted
quickly and no harm was done!
On Saturday, I went to Bunnings.
I knew I wasn’t going to school
because we went along a
different road. Normally, I take
the oppawtunity to have a
power nap when I’m in the car.
But, this time I sat up and looked
out of the window for nearly the
whole trip before I closed my
eyes and snored. When we
arrived, it took me no time at all
to sniff out the sausages.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to
snag (see what I did there?!) a
snack. Thank you to everyone
who prepared, cooked, served
and ate the sausages. Over $900
was raised for KPS!

Why it is important to recycle!
By 3/4G
Every time we recycle, we save our environment a little more. Recycling is converting waster into reusable materials. A glass bottle takes over 4000 years to actually decompose. Can you believe it! Research has proven that plastic bags that are thrown into the ocean kill over a million sea creatures a year.
Animals get sick by piles of rubbish that travel through drains all around animal habitats. For example, turtles think that plastic bags are jellyfish, so they eat the plastic bag and then they choke, get sick and die. In 1975, the National Academy of Sciences estimated that cargo and cruise ships dumped 10 million kg of rubbish into the ocean. Isn’t that disgusting? Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year. Do your part now to help animals stay healthy.
Our grade 3-6 students have been learning to write persuasive texts. 3/4G have shared their jointly written text that outlines strong arguments as to why we should recycle. They have backing up their arguments with facts about the impact of rubbish on the environment. Well done 34G – I
hope that people are persuaded to recycle after reading your article. One student told me that as a result of her new learning she is now going to revise her persuasive text to include facts to support and strengthen
her arguments.
Coles supermarkets are issuing one Sports for Schools voucher for every $10 spent at Coles. Our school is
collecting these vouchers that we will be able to redeem against sports equipment. So please collect them for our
school and get family and neighbours to help us too! There are collection boxes outside the school & at Kilmore an
Wallan Coles. Our Current total is =58900 We still have 7 days left of collecting. As Vouchers will be issued until the 3rd of April. Please drop your tickets in the school box’s at Coles or hold onto them for the 1st week back in Term 2
for the School box please.Thank you for your support!! KPS sports for schools program.
Why it is important to recycle!
(continued) On average 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ends up as rubbish. As much as 50% of waste in the average rubbish bin could be composted. Did you know that up to 8% of a vehicle can be recycled, that is why tow trucks take away old cars and crush them. Australia competes against the world in many things, in some areas such as recycling newspaper we have been the leaders for years but we still have a lot of work to do and we need your help. We can recycle many different things such as; cardboard, glass bottles, jars, plastic containers, steel cans and aluminium. There is a leading company in Australia called RePlas and this company reuse recycled materials to make new things. They love getting old materials to make new things and it is great for our environment.
Dumping rubbish onto our environment has a huge impact and can cause serious damage to our animal’s habitats and land. Did you know that Australia is the second biggest producer of rubbish in the world? It is not a great record to have! Every year each Australian throws out 700kg of rubbish. Some rubbish will break down and rot but some will not. This can cause bad gasses to leak into our clean fresh air, causing pollution.
It is important that the earth be not overrun with rubbish. Recycling is important to control rubbish levels. Recycling has more than one use, which reduced rubbish levels everywhere. We encourage everyone to recycle whenever they can.
