Hello and welcome to Sociology 1, Intro to Sociology through the College of Alameda. My name is Susan Ingram and I will be your instructor over the next three week. This is a 3 week course and we have a lot of information to cover in a short aount of time. Please dont worry I will work with you to assist you in being successful in the course.1

SOC 1 is worth 3 units and meets from Tuesday, May 27th until Friday June 13th dont let that end date spook you Friday the 13th has always been my lucky day! Our final exam will be due on the 13th by 9:00 PM, but more about that later. I am happy to answer your questions at anytime and I am more then willing to adjust the course schedule if needed. 2

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS

POINTS = 80REFLECTIVE WRITINGFor each chapter there will be one pre-writing on the selected topics. Each writing is worth a total of 10 points. You have the option of not participating in 2 of the chapter writings at least two days apart. If you choose to write on every chapter, those extra points will be counted towards your final grade.

DISCUSSION BOARDS

POINTS = 80For each chapter there will be a selection of topics for discussion posted on the moodle site. You are required to post one original response to AT LEAST one topic and respond to at least TWO classmates original posts. Your posts must reflect an understanding of the course material to that point in the course and must be written, in most cases, using appropriate academic language and must be respectful of the views of others. Disagreement is encouraged, disrespect is not. You have the option of not participating in TWO chapter discussions at least two days apart. If you choose to participate in all ten discussions, those extra points will be counted towards your final grade.

MID TERMPOINTS = 30The mid tem will consist of two take home essay questions, to be discussed at a later date.

FINALPOINTS = 50The mid tem will consist of multiple choice/true false questions and two essay questions, to be discussed at a later date.

RESEARCH PROJECTPOINTS = 10This project is designed to both be entertaining and educational. Details will be posted on the moodle site at the beginning of the second week of the course.
