IMT-H | Prarambh Empressario | Internship Edition

Dear Students,

WWe bring to you the very special Internship Edition of Empressario. As the first year students begin their preparations for the upcoming summers, we thought it would be apt to bring to you the experi-ences of your seniors. At IMT Hyderabad, we consider our 14-16 week internship process as the step-ping stone into the corporate world. The internship exercise is faculty generated and super-vised and is completely project driven. As a school, this helps us, get better projects for our students and in turn the corporates who participate in the exercise are able to see value in the project outcomes. The Summer Internship Program at IMT Hyderabad is a 12 credit module (equivalent to four courses in a regular semester). This makes the process rigorous and keeps students on their toes. The faculty members travel to the companies (3-4 times) during the period and interact with the students and meet the company guides. This helps us forge stronger and deeper ties with the corporates and also helps us work on Pre-placement offers. The company also benefits from the faculty supervision on the project. This helps create a better quality outcome which at times is highly appreciated by the company. TheThe Internship period for you will be an interesting journey. For those of you that are stepping into the corporate world for the first time, this will be your initiation into the corporate work environment and culture, the discipline of time, the value of networking, the constant deadline pres-sures, the ever changing team dynamics and above all the challenge to keep performing consistently through all times. For those of you who have already ‘Been there, Seen that,’ this will be more of an opportunity to assess how the additional skill you are acquiring will improve your employability. The ininternship experience is meant to help you appreciate application of class learning in real life. It is intended to introduce you to the value of work. It will help you assess yourself, your aspirations and your career goals through the tasks you do.

We see a changed, more mature and disciplined student in the next year. Always remember - the summers are what you make of it.

So choose wisely and choose well!!

Best wishes.

Finance

What is finance for us???

It is the study that describes the management, creation and study of money, banking, credit, investments, assets and liabilities.

Warren Buffett described the importance of finance through a simple quote which says’

“Rule No. 1: Never Lose Money,“Rule No. 1: Never Lose Money, Rule No. 2: Never Forget Rule No. 1”

This quote is a simple example of how finance seems to be the soul of any business.Let us go through some of the experiences that the students of IMT, Hyderabad had in the financial sector during their internship programmes.

Let’s Begin…!!Let’s Begin…!!

Andhra Bank A worthwhile experience!!!

Vishwanath MaddaliPGDM- 2nd YEAR IMT, HYDERABAD

My work profile in Andhra Bank was related to financial risk management which deals with things like capital calculation, rating process, stress testing, risk mitigation etc.

Work Objective:

MyMy project objective was capital calculation using Internal Ratings Based Approach (IRB). The work is based on the Basel guidelines that all the Central Banks adopt and thereby design their risk management frameworks. It is very important to understand the Basel norms and regular readings of RBI circulars to establish good command on risk management. After the literature study, I understood the importance of risk management functions in a bank.

Lessons That I Have Learnt:

II have learnt various methodologies in calculating components of credit risk, understood and implemented the knowledge learnt from the Basel documents. Official notes from Andhra Bank have also been a very good source, apart from the Basel and RBI circulars. I felt that Basel and RBI are like languages through which Integrated Risk Management Department (IRMD) people at Andhra Bank communicate with each other.

India Ratings & Research (Ind-Ra) All the excitement about internship…Shalaka Singh

PGDM- 2nd YEAR IMT, HYDERABAD

Even before I was done with my 2nd semester end term examination, I was overwhelmed with this excitement of going for an internship. Determining the field, company and the job-role was itself a big task. Once I was clear that I want to pursue finance, I went in that direction and found myself as an intern in Fitch India Ratings and Research. Fitch provided me with a bundle of opportunities to choose from in the finance sector. India Ratings & Research (Ind-Ra) is India's Most Respected rating agency committed to providing the India's credit markets with accurate, timely and prospective credit opinions. Built on a foundation of independent thinking, rigorous analytics, and anan open & balanced approach towards credit research, Ind-Ra has grown rapidly during the past decade gaining significant market presence in India's fixed income market. My work and my experience: Every day was a new experience. First few weeks passed in adapting to the corporate culture and learning the working methodology of the company. Once I became familiar with the company, the project work started. My core project was in the area of “Peer company analysis of different sectors”, but apart from that, I also got the opportunity to work under the head analyst on various on-going analysis projects. While working on the core project, I became familiar with quite a lot of new aspects about the market and the industry I was working in. Apart from the learnings I got from the project, the experience helped me to grow as a person itself. Meeting the business officials and conversing with the top managers provided in-depth understanding of this business world. The constant guidance andand frankness on the part of the company officials helped me to improve myself in every stage of my internship. The financial analyst was always approachable and was ready to answer all my queries. Their immense support and patience helped me to understand the organization better and thus I could make valuable contributions. Further, the faculty visits and stage wise presentations ensured that we are moving ahead in the right direction. Each of us was assigned a faculty guide who was just a phone call away, for any assistance or guidance. They have been watching us since the day we started the internship and kept on advising us on important matters. Overall, I really enjoyed this period and the experience of working with all the people in India Ratings and Research.

Mahindra Satyam Probably one of the best that an intern can get…..Jawahar Patnaik

PGDM- 2nd YEAR IMT, HYDERABAD

My work at Mahindra Satyam:

The internship dealt mostly working with the client at the client's place.

TheThe project was related to ERP Implementation of Finance where receipts and invoices of Mahindra Satyam were to be mapped. In this process, I learnt about how a company like Mahindra Satyam accounts for its transaction. Also, I was involved in another project by a client were I had to verify and authenticate around 6000 transactions which were repatriated by various countries (Funds transferred to India) and how much money was consumed without proper records. Finally, the client was pretty satisfied with the overall performance.

Key Lessons Learnt:

I learnt how to deal with clients, understand the work pressure involved and then work accordingly. I got acclimatized working long hours during audit as I realized that TIME is GOLD for any company during that period. I even got some key lessons on Microsoft EXCEL, that is, how to handle up to 4 lakh line items at a time. This was the maximum that I handled.

TATA STEELOpportunity lying ahead!!! J. Anish Nikhil

PGDM- 2nd YEAR - IMT Hyderabad

Work Environment:Well, when I finally landed myself in TATA Steel, I had mixed feelings about one of the largest steel maker in the World, but the HR department helped me out right from day one. I was finally in my office and met my company guide who explained the entire business process of TATA Steel to me and assigned my project in corporate finance.

Work to be done:TheThe project that I was assigned at TATA Steel Ltd was Capital Project Evaluation of its recent 3MTPA Expansion at Jamshedpur Steel Works. The project involved the usage of various capital budgeting techniques like NPV, IRR, pay-back period, discounted pay-back period and sensitivity analysis. These techniques are used to evaluate how feasible it would be for an organisation to take up the project at that particular moment of time. The only challenge that I faced was to compute the Cash Flow Statements, I was stuck in a dilemma whether to consider the net cash flow or the cash flow from operations, but I finally decided to consider the cash flow from operations as TATA Steel beingbeing a manufacturing unit, considering cash from operations would only make sense. The project was completed successfully with the support of my company guide who was very helpful in providing me with the data required and in guiding me with my final project report. It was really fun working with an organization like TATA Steel and I would like to seek an opportunity to work with them in the future.

Mahindra RiseKaustubh TandonPGDM- 2nd YEAR IMT, HYDERABAD

In January 2011, the Mahindra Group launched a new corporate brand, Mahindra Rise, to unify Mahindra's image across industries and geographies. The brand positions Mahindra products and services as inspirational, supporting customers' ambitions to 'Rise.'

My Experience:SomSomething similar happened with me too. To identify the challenges and match the pace of Mumbai is the first learning in itself. It ingrained me with two important things- Discipline and to make an early head start. Given the profile of HR management intern at Mahindra Rise, the task involved making the system compatible for transition from Excel data base to ERP support. It was pivotal for the company, as I had to first go to different locations and collect the personal data of the employees, all being confidential in their nature. It taught me work ethics and how to handle responsibilities with almost no margin for error. The later phase of my internship comprised more of external work asas benchmarking the best practices of the other players. It involved going through a good amount of literature and then developing a questionnaire that would cover the required facets, underscoring the importance of being concise.

Team work makes or breaks a company, with proper data sharing, functional bottlenecks can be removed, and these were my major takeaways. One of my specific learning was understanding of a process at a level and having patience to do it. While I was doing that data entry work, I was grumbling initially, but when it was over, I got to know for how many things it was required, from your laws to benefits and direct implication on P&L of a company.

Middle Earth HRShriya Pathak

PGDM (2012-2014)IMT, HYDERABAD

The Company:

Middle Earth HR is today one of the largest specialist training, education and knowledge support companies for HR professionals worldwide. They aimed to build HR and thus human happiness by creating learning opportunities and bringing a change in HR in Organizations.

My Internship Experience as a Fresher:

InInternship means lot more to a fresher than to an experienced student. An experienced student has a fair amount of insight regarding the professionalism that is expected, the ways to handle pressure and expectations, but for a fresher, this is the first exposure to the real world with respect to the work culture, people and environment where these things are etched in the mind for the rest of their lives.WithWith a similar frame of mind-set as that of a fresher, I have tried to extract as much as I possibly could from my internship here at Middle Earth HR, which is Training and Consultancy Company based in Hyderabad. While my project work was based on designing a certification program on Talent Management, I have also been associated in tasks like Recruitment process, Coordination for HR Summit and writing an Address speech, without keeping my project at standstill and meeting the weekly deadlines set for the project.

OneOne misconception that needs to be broken here is that, interns are not just made to sit and observe at the work place but are expected to work like a regular employee. In fact, the role of an intern is very similar to that of a regular employee, with similar responsibilities and expectations. In some places and cases, the expectations are even harsher and real, and interns are expected to take decisions like regular employees. So the sooner we understand the need to be proactive and responsible, the better will be the learning and fulfillment of expectations, as the company expects toto gain in terms productivity compared to the amount of time and resources it spends on each one of interns.

IMT-H | Prarambh Empressario | September-2013 | Page 15

Before ending, I would like to highlight some of the responsibilities that I had, apart from the project work, which is developing the Talent Management Program from scratch using secondary research. Also, these are some of the basic responsibilities that are given to any student interning in the HR stream.

Some of my responsibilities included 1. Recruitment process for the post of HR Manager (telephonic interview, aptitude test, profile assessment, conducting GD & role plays); 2.2. Coordinating the HR Summit – a) Primary research on the Pain Areas of Compensation & Performance Management (conducting and analyzing surveys), b) Single point of contact for the speakers at the Summit, c) Handling referrals from the speakers, and d) Writing the summary of the event.

DhwanitPGDM -2nd YEARIMT, HYDERABAD

BrandCUE is an independent brand design consultancy based in Hyderabad. They excel in changing organizations into self-sufficient entities i.e. brands. They believe in power of design and they work through a process where strategy meets creativity and creativity meets strategy.

A brief on my experience and the role that I have performed:

The journey at BrandCUE had been nothing less than exhilarating. In a single line, I would describe my experience as a lot of learning combined with fun. What follows is an ensemble of my experiences at BrandCUE.

My a My area of work at BrandCUE was largely about Client Prospecting, Sales and Client Servicing. It involved a lot of research, at different stages and in different ways. I found myself surfing the internet for hours or else out on the roads of Hubli and Gulbarga, Karnataka with a pen and paper handy, collecting information for one of our leading clients. Mainly, I was involved in both primary and secondary research areas. I never realized the magnitude of research involved in a market research firm is so huge until I myself worked for one. Truly, it was an amazing experience!

Apart from this, my role at BrandCUE also demanded meeting existing clients, new clients and prospective clients, which was a great opportunity for me to learn about concept selling, pitching the point, on the point, to the point and most importantly, the negotiations before and also after the deal was done. Internship actually gives you an experience of the real world out there. It is quite different from the theory what we study in our classrooms. It is an opportunity to apply the concepts studied in the class.

Fortunately, with a little guidance from the mentors at CUE, I devised the entire branding strategy for a number of clients, along with the brand support. It was an interesting task and also the mentors were very supportive.

PepsiCo, India A delightful experience… Aakanksha Khanna

PGDM -2nd YEARIMT, HYDERABAD

About the company: PPepsiCo is a global food and beverage company which has 22 brands in its product portfolio. Their major brands being Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade, Frito-Lay, Pepsi-Cola and various other food and beverages products. It is a leader in grain-based snack food. The company’s products are distributed across more than 200 countries with net revenue more than $65 billion and also each brand generating annual retail sales more than $1 billion.

My Experience:

MyMy internship at PepsiCo India under Beverages Division gave me a chance to gain widespread exposure to various aspects of not only the company, but the FMCG sector as a whole. During my four month long internship, I have conducted independent market research on Pepsi IPL promotional programs that were running in different markets. It was an incredible experience involving extensive field work and data analysis. The exciting part was that apart from market research, the company gave me an opportunity to work on diverse projects revolving around IPL events and boosting of overall beverage sales in the market during the peak demand season. Though mymy work involved a lot of travelling, I have no complaints regarding it because the exposure I received during my internship was worth it. I actually got to feel the pulse of IPL marketing. If one really wants to get into true marketing field, he/she has to get out in the field and enjoy it. A proper project gives a definition to your work; therefore it is very important that your project be clearly defined.

Strategy

“You may not be interested in strategy, but strategy is interested in you” -Leon Trotsky

Strategy can be defined as the plan of action designed to achieve a long term or overall aim.

Strategy is needed in each and every sphere of life. It can be considered as the backbone of any deci-sion taken, whether the decision is related to finance, marketing, operations or analytics.

Let us see how strategy helps to gain practical and hands on experience at any work place.

Amarthi Consulting Internship, a process of augmenting

strategic thought process… Hemanth P.V.PGDM -2nd YEARIMT, HYDERABAD

An internship in strategy will instantly make you feel that you are a personal teacher for a famous or a great clay artist. The clay model is right there in front of you but it may not be the best one in a competition that your student is going to participate in. You act like a mentor, trying to understand the problem, where it might have gone wrong, how the other artists have created their models and what is lacking in your student’s clay model. You refine what is given to you, provide it with the necessary changes and give it a fine finishing and soon you have a clay model that’s unbeatable.SStrategy is very important when it comes to running a business. It gives you a broad experience in all the fields related to business, be it Finance, Operations, Marketing, HR, you name it and you have it.

Internship Experience:

WWe had to create sustainable growth strategies for a company with niche products in a niche market. It was an amazing experience considering the different roles we got to play on single project and it was a hands-on experience on how a company actually works. We studied the entire industry and market, met the Client, tried to extract information from competitors and retailers by hook or by crook and formulated strategies for the efficient functioning of all the departments.

Exposure that adds value to life:

TTruly, strategy gives us an overall exposure and molds us into someone who looks at a business from all the perspectives and that’s what is required to be a successful leader, businessman, or an entrepreneur.

Coromandel International Limited An immensely knowledgeable experience!!! Avinash

PGDM -2nd YEARIMT, HYDERABAD

Coromandel International Limited, India’s second largest Phosphatic fertilizer player, is in the business segments of Fertilizers, Specialty Nutrients, Crop Protection and Retail. Coromandel has also introduced a range of Specialty Nutrient products including Organic Fertilizers. The Company manufactures a wide range of fertilizers and markets it around the globe.PProjects and Experience: Internship was not lingering in my mind till I finished my first semester. But once I finished my first semester, the talk about Internship by others was spreading like rapid-fire. After a lot of thinking and efforts, I got into Coromandel International Limited which is a leading player in Indian market. When I entered the office, it was a wonderful feeling as it was the first time I entered a corporate to work for around a quarter or so. I worked on two projects i.e.., “Competitor analysis” and “Hedging of currency risk”.FiFirst two to three days was not much of work because there was an induction process where they introduced me to other people in the company. The knowledge that I have acquired at the end of the Internship is immense. I learn to connect theory with practical work. Even though we learnt a lot of concepts in theory, intuition is one thing which will be used most of the times.InIn corporate, they except perfection in everything even when it comes to the format of the presentation etc. “You cannot have free lunch unless and until you work here”-This is one line which I learnt and will stay forever in my mind. You can’t expect the deadlines to be acceptable for you. If they feel it can be done in that time frame, they expect you to finish it by the deadline. Though it was stressful and pressurizing due to workload, I still enjoyed the work as I learnt many new things. Nine words which would describe my Internship experience are,• Impeccable•• Interesting• Incredible• Inquisitive• Intense• Enterprising• Exploring • Efficacious•• Excellent

TATA Steel Ltd Sudip BrahmacharyPGDM -2nd YEARIMT, HYDERABAD

Tata steel is among the top ten global steel companies with an annual crude steel capacity of over 28 million tonnes per annum. It is now world’s most geographically-diversified steel producers, with operations in 26 countries and a commercial presence in over 50 countries.

My initial journey towards the corporate world:II am pretty sure that everybody will be writing about their flamboyant and lavish expedition of the fourteen to sixteen weeks of internships far away from the sunny brick coloured walls of IMT into a place where the real tantrum is. I think I should give a taste of the not so hyped part of internship. It is of no doubt that internships give any MBA aspirant the much necessary exposure that is expected from the new manager when he gets into the corporate world. But obviously there is a flip side to this and let me elaborate that in my ‘internship experience’.

Internship at a Glance:FiFirst thing first- if you want to spend a typical Indian summer under the cool shed of your home, TATA is the place for you. Even though TATA Steel being a steel making company, I had rather done a consultancy work for them, wherein I looked into the value stream of silico manganese. I studied both global and Indian market and then made a strategy whether they should go for a captive plant or continue outsourcing and yes of course, if they are going for a captive plant then with proper material mapping, what is the advantage they are getting and how much more value they can transfer to the customer so that they get a competitive edge over its customers. At one point of time I I actually thought what is the use of learning all the sophisticated data modelling approaches as somebody after having a glance at my linear programming told me that “see here excel will calculate it for you, I want you to calculate it manually, then only you’ll learn.

Though the place seems to be all boring and all but I have also learned a lot about how the real corporate work, how to fit in theories into practice, and above all why Kolkata is called the city of Joy!
