SpongeBob Squarepantsis an animated teevisionshow that rst aired in 1999,bt did yo know that it isthe ony Nicktoon rom the

    90s that hasnt ended yet?For many o s born in the90s, hearing this kis orcartoon-ed hearts. Sadymany o a 90s kids avorite

TV shows have ended, mosto which do not even go intosyndication. This is becasethey have now beenrepaced by new teevisionshows, which are aimed atthe new generation.

Many o s mayremember watchingcartoons rom Nickeodeonthat rst started airingin the 1990s sch as:Rugrats, All Grown Up,

CatDog, Hey Arnold!,JimmyNeutron, Rocket Power, TheWild Thornberrys, Doug,Chalkzone, All That, Kenanand Kel, and The AmandaShow. When asked whatshow he watched the mostgrowing p, Chance Koretos,

jnior, answers, I watcheda ot o Bufy the VampireSlayer, bt the cartoonI watched the most wasprobaby Rugrats! I ovedthat show! Kyie Hopkinson,

jnior, aso commented, Iwatched a ot oRugrats. I Ihad the choice o bringing a

show back thogh, I wodchoose CatDog.From Cartoon Network,

one may remember: DextersLaboratory, Cow & Chicken,

Johnny Bravo, The PowerpufGirls, Ed Edd & Eddy, andCourage the Cowardly Dog.

These shows are not theony ones that a 90s kid hadwatched growing p, btthey are the ones that hadstarted in the 1990s. Theseshows gave s 90s kidssomething to ook orwardeach day. Rerns were neverooked down pon, onypraised. We can a agree

that these shows rom the1990s beat the shows thatare crrenty being aired onCartoon Network. Every 90skid can remember a timeong ago when CartoonNetwork payed CARTOONS.Now the channe seems tobroadcast ive action showsat east ha the time. Schas Hole in the Wall, Dude,What Would Happen, andDestroy, Build, Destroy. Ione is ortnate enogh tohave not seen these shows, consider thy se cky anddont trn on the teevision.

The ist o wondermemories doesnt end there.

There were varios otherchannes that broadcasteda 90s kids avorite shows.Other cassics one mayremember incde: ScoobyDoo, The Flintstones, Tomand Jerry, The Jetsons, YogiBear, The Smurs, Popeye, and the a mighty Pokmon(which ater 700 episodes issti airing). Teevisionshows rom the 1990s aresti oved to this day bymany. Jst thinking abota avorite show, or gettingthe rare opportnity o

seeing it once again, bringsa bright smie to ones ace.

These shows are what madeor chidhood better, 90sshows had great hmor, and actay had somegood moras to the story.

Today, we can ony hope tohep the new generationby sitting them down andping ot the dsty VHS,praying that it wont eat theast Rugrats cassette.

    Mitt Romney

Its that time o yearagain. Campaigning time. Many esteemed men andwomen rom both parties arecompeting to become thenext President o the UnitedStates. In the RepublicanGOP our men are still inthe race. Newt Gingrichis in rst, Mitt Romney insecond, RonPaul is inthird, and RickSantorum isin last place. Many people

heard o all othis hubbub, but does onereally knowwhats goingon? Lets prole top dogMitt Romney.

Mitt Romney camerom an uneducatedhousehold. Neither hismother nor ather evernished college. But heworked hard and soonbecame the governor oMichigan. His wie Ann wasdiagnosed with multiple

sclerosis in 1998 and oughta long battle with breastcancer. Mitt stayed by herside the whole time. Mitt isnot a career politician. Hehas spent most o his liein the private sector, givinghim intimate knowledge ohow our economy works. But he has also been anoutstanding public servant.

In one chapter o his career,he reversed the decline oa state mired in recession. In another chapter, he

salvaged the 2002 WinterOlympic Games romcertain disaster.

When Mitt was electedGovernor o Massachusettsin 2002, the state was inbad shape. Its budget wasout o balance, spendingwas soaring, and taxpayers

    were beingrequired topay moreand morein taxes ordiminishings e r v i c e s .

    The stateeconomy wasgoing downthe drain,

with businesses cuttingback on investment or evenclosing and unemploymentbecoming more and morecommon. Mitt made harddecisions that broughtstate spending undercontrol. He restructured andstrengthened governmentprograms, cutting backwhere necessary andnding satisaction rom thecitizens o Michigan.

Mitt Romney is abusiness man. He is CEO oBain Capital. That bloomedinto Staples, Bright Horizons, and Sports Authority. Soonhe returned to his old joband Bain & Company, nowthe CEO. Mitt denitelyknows how to turn a badeconomy.

    Many people have

    heard all the hubbub,

    but does anyone re-

    ally know whats go-ing on?

    Weird and wacky news

News comes in manyorms, but the mostascinating to some is theweird category. Thesehumorous stories comerom everywhere in everyshape and orm. Here are

just a ew instances o thesestories.

The rst story dealswith Facebook addiction.

Two teens in Atlanta,Georgia broke into a CNNsnewsroom where they

hiked to the th foor tond a computer. Why wouldthey need a computer youask? They needed to check

Facebook pages. Whenauthorities discovered theduo, the computer screenrevealed the reasoningo the break in. The girlswere charged with criminaltrespassing and were eachheld on a $500 bail. Justhow attached to socialmedia are people these

days? Apparently they areattached enough to gethauled o to jail or it.

In a new story, PresidentObamas used 2005 Chrysler300C is being auctioned

    o. The car is Kelley BlueBooked at around $14,346,but youd be crazy to thinkyou could get this particularone or such a price. Theauction started o witha whopping $1,000,000minimum on eBay. Aridiculous price indeed, andeven with the low miles,19,000, it is still a total rip-

    o. But hey, someone willmost likely go or it.

A study conducted byU.K.s National Car Parks

concluded that womendrivers are better than theirmale counterparts. Over the2,500 drivers studied in themonth long observation, the women scored higherthan men. The study

consisted o various aspectso parking, includingtechnique, accuracy, andtime taken to park. Thereare sure to be many mixedemotions about the resultso the observation, but astudy is a study.

Riverhawk Review - Twin Falls, ID - Tuesday , February 14, 2012News 3Autism, why it matters

    Autumn Myers

    Staff Writer

We have all watchedtelevision; thereore wehave all seen commercials.

There have been severalcommercials aired topromote the awarenesso autism over the pastew years. Many o us haveheard o autism, but do weall know what it actually is?

Autism is a disorderin brain developmentthat occurs within the rst

ew years o lie. Thosewith autism experiencediculties in socialinteraction, communication, and behavior. Statisticsrom the U.S. Centersor Disease Controland Prevention (CDC)determined approximately1 in 110 American childrenare on the autism spectrum.

This statistic is a staggering600 percent increase overonly the past two decades.

    To be on the autism

spectrum generally meansthat everyone with autism is

    unique. Some autistics may

have great speech abilities, while others may still bedeveloping their speechskills. Others with autismmay be incredibly social, while the rest may be morecomortable with keepingto their sel.

The exact cause oautism is still unknown.Since there are so manyvariations to the disordero autism, it makes it thatmuch more dicult to ndthe direct cause. Recentstudies have stronglyavored that autism may becaused by mutation in thegenes. Some people (mostlyparents) have questionedvaccines their child hasreceived. Ater studieswere conducted, scientistshave said that there is noconnection between autismand the vaccines tested.

Autism is nothing bad,or anything to be lookeddown upon. Many o thosewith autism have amazedpeople every day. Some o

us may have heard o JasonMcElwain, a teenager with

    autism who loved playing

basketball. At his school,he was appointed managero the basketball team. Atone o the games, he wasplaced onto the court andproved to be incrediblyphenomenal. The crowdwent wild as they witnessedJason score 20 points withinthe last ew minutes othe game. Jason is a greatexample that even thoughone may have a disorder, itwont stop them rom beinggreat.

Each person withautism has something trulyspecial about them, andJason McElwain had theopportunity to show theworld whats special abouthim. Each person withautism develops dierently;some skills develop quickerthan others. Autism isincreasing each year, so it isvery important to be aware, and most importantlyaccept the disorder. Drivers Ed at CRHS

Driving is a hugeresponsibility, and it is beingtaught to teenagers all overthe country at high schoolsmuch like Canyon RidgeHigh School. Even thoughevery teenager is tickledto death toget theirlicense, everyt e e n a g e rmust got h r o u g ha driversEd course.Drivers Ed isoers at CRHS under theinstruction o Mr. Stewart, ateacher rom OLeary.

Every morning or sixweeks, Mr. Stewart shows upto CRHS early to teach thebasics o driving to a classo potentially scary drivers.Imagine the courage thatthis job would take. A valiantsoldier with the potential tobe slaughtered in a thrillingcar crash, Mr. Stewart

assumes the responsibilityo many parents and

    teaches hundreds o high

school students how todrive.Drivers Ed students

seem to appreciate hiseorts and Kyle Roderiguez,a sophomore and ormerstudent in Drivers Ed, states,Mr. Stewart was a verygood teacher; he was very

laid back in classand a really goodpassenger ordriving, Kyle isntthe only studentwho has made itout o the classalive thanks toMr. Stewart,

many students share hisopinion o how Mr. Stewarthelped them through thesix-week Drivers Ed course.

Drivers Ed teachershave to go through quite abit o grie and he is a verybrave man. The studentscan get unruly in theseclasses. Bayley Seigworth, sophomore said, I reallyenjoyed drivers ED, but Iwill admit I did not pay too

    What the hearts mean

A time or heartshaped candies, boxes ochocolates, and fowers orthe sweethearts o lovedones. A time or those to

show they care however, some beg to dier. Forsome, Valentines Day isnot even looked at as a dayo love and caring, its thereminder o a massacre.

In a community inChicago, there were tworival gangs. Al Caponesname will never beorgotten, or he was theone in charge o makingsure his rival, Bugs Moran, was dead. Capone set upa horric plan involving a

stolen police car and gangmembers rom outside othe Chicago area. He had ahijacker set up a meeting tosell and exchange a certainkind o whiskey or a reallygood price, knowing Moranwould agree. Six men diedat Morans headquarters, the seventh died at thehospital. Even thoughCapone was ater Moran,Moran was unknowinglysaving his own lie runninga couple minutes late to themeeting that was set up

or 10:30 AM, February 14,1929. However, or the resto us, Valentines Day isntrefected on as somethingso hideous.

February 14th, is theeast day or St. Valentine. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasis

    marked February 14

    th

as the celebration o hismartyrdom. He, Valentinus,is the patron saint o love, young people, and happymarriages. Valentinus wasa priest in Rome during thetime Claudius II was theRoman Emperor. It was atime o war and Claudius IIdidnt approve o marriagesduring this time. He hadbelieved that single soldiersperormed better thanmarried soldiers.

Valentinus believedotherwise. Going againstthe law, Valentinus becamea bishop and beganperorming marriageceremonies. Because othis, it leads him to hisdeath. His death wasntanything pleasant either;he was stoned and clubbed. And when he didnt dierom that, Claudius had hissoldiers behead Valentinus.Beore Valentinus waskilled, a riend whom hehad perormed a marriage

ceremony came in to visithim. He slipped him anote saying, rom yourValentine. This is assumed tohave started the traditionalvalentines handed out toriends and amily.

    Since St. Valentines

death, couples whom hehad married vowed to neverlet him be orgotten. Withthe sacrice and courageValentinus had in orderto perorm marriages, ully aware that a brutalbeating and death wasthe punishment, he did soanyways.

He wanted youngcouples and those in love tobe happy, not live their livesin ear because o love.

Just because ValentinesDay is so commercialized, doesnt mean the singlepeople out there have toeel completely lonely.Victoria Valdez, sophomore, says, To me Valentines Dayreaches out to a certaingroup, couples. But whatis the holiday intended tomean or us single people?

To answer that question, they should know that St.Valentines work is nevernished, and hes watchingover them so they can havea happy lie in love too.

Mr. SteveDavis, History teacher oralmost every grade level atCanyon Ridge High School, says, There is a real com-petition between Mitt Rom-ney, ormer Government oMassachusetts, and NewtGingrich, the ormer speak-er o the house.

From votes to speech-es, each candidate is doinghis best to take the win-ning toll against PresidentObama, but whos lookingthe best? Mr. Davis also said,I would preer Mitt Romneyrom the Republican partybecause he has organiza-tion and money to run a na-tional campaign. Romneyis sure coming close withGingrich in rst, just 74,998

votes to go, he could pos-sibly win. But the real issueis Obama vs. Romney. In arecent speech, Mitt Rom-ney calls Obama, detachedrom reality, the people, andhis own words. He had alsosaid, the detachment be-

tween reality and what hesays is extraordinary, I thinkits time to have somebodywho says what he meansand means what he says.(Shear, Article).

Like in any other cam-paigns or competitions, there will always be oneloser. Ater so many candi-dates have dropped out othe Presidential Race, it isbecoming easier to see whoit will be. With Ron Paul be-ing in dead last with only77, 943 votes, he may notget too ar in this race, buttheres always a chance oranybody to turn it around.Davis also added, I wouldntwant to see Paul win be-cause he might racture thevotes, meaning take votesrom the real two republi-cans competing, i he ormsa third party. So there youhave it, the updates on ourPresidential Election. Keepwatching the news or newinormation that is to comesoon.

    It is accidents like

these that bring up manyquestions. Should authenticlooking toy guns be madeillegal, what should theappropriate age to own anair sot or pellet-gun be,and nally, are childrenbecoming too comortablewith handling guns? KendallHall, 11, along with most o

society, completely agreesthat young children arebecoming too comortablewith real as well as akeguns. But when askedi authentic looking toyguns, such as air sot andpellet guns need to havean age limit or restrictionson them, he said, no.

Throughout the halls oCanyon Ridge High School, there are multitudes ostudent musicians roaming.

Talent levels and preerredinstruments greatly vary, butone thing is or sure: Thereare next to no students whocan shred on a guitar or slapthe bass quite the way thatthe Schmid brothers can.

Daniel and Nic Schmid, now Canyon Ridge seniors,

were born in Modesto,Caliornia. Soon ater, theymoved to Twin Falls andhave lived here ever since.

At the age o 10, Danielreceived a cheap mini-guitar or his birthday, which led to the discoveryo his love or music and, more specically, the guitar. Now the proud ownero an Ibanez (RG series)7-string guitar, Daniel playswhenever possible. Bandssuch as Gojira, Meshuggah, and Korn have heavily

genres such as extreme andprogressive death metal.Daniel hopes to take his madskill and determination tothe next level and producemusic that he, as well as thegeneral public, will enjoy.

    From its very rst year,

    Canyon Ridge High Schools

    rock has been the target

been a mesh o colors rom

a school pays its visit, the

poor rock is painted an ugly

blue or a bright orange. It is

    a way o marking territory.

    Then Canyon Ridge would

have to go out and paint it

back to the beautiul color, crimson. This tagging has

    always constituted a rivalry.

The rock has been used to

    pump students up beore

a big game, or earn a bit o

    payback ater a loss. Either

    way, the rock has always

    been a way o speaking a

    Now the rock has

    become a way or students

    to write birthday wishes

    Nowadays, the rock is a

One may think readingis boring and pointless, but behind the turning oall o those pages comesthe development o manybenets and ideas. Sadly,it seems that lately therehas been a lack o desire ormotivation to read a book, let alone even look at thecover o it.

With reading, one canactually become smarter;reading is an active mentalprocess. While reading, onegets to enter a new worldlled with new experiencesand new characters.Jordan Shindle, 12th, states,

Reading is pretty awesome,it takes you to diferentplaces, and diferenttimes, and you get to see acharacters lie in your eyes.

I students spent asmuch time reading as theydo sitting on the couch andwatching TV, society wouldall have the chance tobecome even more literateand gain more knowledge, creativity, and a deeperunderstanding o othercultures. As most would

say, the books are muchbetter than the movies;books have more detailand meaning behind them.Reading is also stress ree, sowhen one has had a roughday at school, going home

and opening a book canbe soothing and provide achance to unwind.

According toPersistencelearning.com,reading improves onesocus and concentration.Senior, Sameer Zamel says,Reading is boring, becauseI have better things to do,and its just no un. Whilereading a book, one isocusing on the book orlong periods o time; onemust also have the ability

to concentrate and ollowalong with the book.So to some, reading

may be boring and timeconsuming, but gainingknowledge and memoryseems to be worth the time.

Animal testing andanimal cruelty are one o thebiggest problems in society.

The question is, when willsomeone stand up to do

Millionso animals die every yearrom testing. Millions arekilled every year or ood, sowould dying rom medicalresearch be more worthy oa death? Who are we to saywho lives and who doesnt?

    The government doesnt

even consider rats and micereal animals thereoreexperimenters dont have tokeep a record o how manyrodents are contributingto the number o animaldeaths. Yes, human lie doesseem to have a greater valuethan the lie o an animal, but, that gives no right totreat them like lthy scum.

day out. Their stress levelsare immense, and theyknow danger is right aroundthe corner. So, the responsean animal has to a certainexperiment may be thecomplete opposite to thato a humans reaction.

Testing ranges romcosmetics to cleaningproducts and medicalresearch. Emmanuel Nunez, senior, says, It would makemore sense to test animals

    or medical research rather

than cosmetics. I couldhonestly care less aboutthe cosmetics and cleaningproducts, Id rather knowabout the medical aspect.

There are other ways to getthese experiments tested!

There have been studieson testing on humantissue cultures, test tubeexperiments, and computermodels.

Delia Plascencia, sophomore, says, Its sad,but thanks to testing onanimals, we live. Now does

this mean a line can orshould be drawn or whatscientists can or cannottest on animals? Certainly.I testing must be doneon animals, it should beo extreme importance.

Testing cosmetics andcleaning products onanimals is just plain wrong. How does that benet thehuman race in the slightestbit? Yes, it tells us i a cleaningchemical is harmul or not,

    but come on. Use common

sense to determine yoursaety in cleaning andapplying make-up andother cosmetics. Not thelives o innocent animals.

I one is really trulyconcerned about the

    products they purchase

being tested on animals, the rst step to stop or evenslow down or do somethingabout animal testing is tostop buying stu with labelssaying theyre tested onanimals.

Hanna alsosaid, even i youre notin a relationship, there isalways someone you canspend it with. So you maynot have to have a loverto get a box o chocolates,

just a best riend or a crush.Hanna also added, myavorite part about it is that

its a day where everybodycan appreciate the onesthey love.

    Flowers, candy, and

gits are being exchangedto see some lucky personsmile rom cheek to cheek, but why is it that in modernday we celebrate is on

just the 14th when reallyit was meant to be thewhole month o February?Long ago during theRomanticism time, a priest

named Valentine hadstarted this tradition. Whensitting in prison, he sent alove card, a valentine, to hiscrush, which he had signed,

Your Valentine. Historiansbelieve that the reason orFebruary 14th being theday to celebrate was either

the death or burial o SaintValentine. Approximately141 million ValentinesDay cards are exchangedannually, making ValentinesDay the second mostpopular card-sendingholiday ater Christmas.(From a Did You Know othe History Channel.)

Valentines Day is acute celebration, but isomeone can show their

love to another way, thenwhy cant they do so anyother day? ValentinesDay may be that one dayto make someone smileand be happy, but itshould be like this everyday and not just one day.Blaze Requa, 11 says, Idsay it is too overratedbecause everybody makes

    Maturity in high school

    High School is a time

    or new experiences, new

riends, and a time or a little

growing up. Does this soundlike a normal teenage high

    school career? Many would

    beg to dier. Students rarely

    take advantage o this time

    to prepare or the difculties

    lie presents. For most, high

    school is a playground, but

    in all actuality, high school

acts as a crash course on

    lie. Ater our measly years,

    unsuspecting teens will

    have the responsibilities o

    an adult thrust into their

    hands. That means paying

    or bills, going to school,

and working that endearinglow-wage job. Having a

grand social lie will not in

    any way prepare students

    or the tasks at hand.

    Students must learn

the value o school and take

    the time to appreciate it.

When it seems as i parents

    are constantly nagging,

    bosses demanding, and

    a load o homework is

    lingering over ones head,

    its only preparing a person

    or the challenges in their

    near uture. Students need

to learn that high school isabout buckling down and

    taking on the responsibility

    or their uture.

So all o this begs the

    question; do students

    take advantage o this

    time? Most would argue,

    no; hence the amount o

    burger-ippers in society.

Every girl wants theperect date that she hasalways envisioned since shewas a little girl in elementaryschool. This is especially trueon that singular day thatcomes in February everyyear, yes, Valentines Day;the day that is lled withlove, chocolates, stuedanimals, owers, and cards.

O course, every girlin the world has a dierentperspective on what sheexpect her boyriends togive her or where to take herout; but it pretty much boilsdown to one thing, and thatis attention. According toa senior at Canyon RidgeHigh School, Sierra Cooper

    just loves spending a lovely

evening with her man andthat is enough or her onValentines Day. She states, Ithink dinner would be greatand watching the sunrise onthe beach.

Although the state oIdaho sadly doesnt have abeach or many things thatresemble a beach, its nicethat a girl can still dream.Yes, the thought o owersand chocolates still warmin a girls heart, but mostlywhat they hope or is a nightwith the one they love that

revolves around a lot o PDAand sweet words spoken.

Senior, Levi Moltexpresses his love orValentines Day. I wouldhave a handmade card anda single rose delivered to

her at school. Then I would

pick her up ater school withanother rose and take her tothe South Hills to watch thesunset, then dinner and amovie. Its easy to say thatnot everyone loves theholiday, many eel as i itssingle awareness day. Toan extent this is true; justkeep in mind that maybenext year one will be able tospend the perect day witha loved one.

Perhaps there is noperect date that exists;however, it may be perect

to that one person. Ratherit is single awareness day ornot, keep in mind that thehope is still alive and theholiday isnt just going tovanish. Happy ValentinesDay everyone!

Most o the laws aroundthe country are there ora good reason, but some-times there are really point-less ones. These real lawsin Idaho make little sense;they must be or keepingpeople like Kameron Yeggyunder control. Do thesethings happen enough thatwe have to make laws aboutthem? Idaho lawmakersseem to think so.

Did you know that inIdaho, it is illegal to givesomeone a box o choco-lates weighing more than50 pounds? Its also illegalto sh on a camels back.Riding a merry-go-round on

With every attractionto another human beingbrings out one o twoemotions; lust or love. Lust,

just one o the seven deadlysins, yet a very potentsin, shows up day to dayin everyones lives. Love,a commitment towards

another, is putting someoneelses happiness above onesown sel. Which o thesetwo do teens really eel?

With being a teenager, the more common o thetwo is lust. Although we mayeel that we love anotherperson, it is in actualitylust that we are eelingtowards them. Theres acertain appeal that drawsone towards that person, and one just cant decipherwhy. According to KennedyPerkins, Senior, Lust is onlyconcerned with the hereand now, while love lookstowards the uture and thepossibilities ahead.

Many teens believethat they eel love towardsanother person, but its

just not quite there yet.Although many teenswont want to hear this, its time that allows us tolove another person. Beingin a relationship or oneweek and enjoying onesb o y r i e n d s / g i r l r i e n d scompany does not meanthat one loves them. It just

means that one was ableto nd someone whosetime they enjoy. Whilemaybe just a week later, the thought o being withthem a second longerseems utterly repulsive.Lust is most commonlymistaken or love in teenrelationships; we are anage group that may be tooyoung to quite understandexactly what love means. It takes maturity andunderstanding to nally ndlove with another humanbeing. Yes, some teens do inactuality nd love in somerelationships, but statisticsshow that the majority eel

nothing more than lust.Love knows no

boundaries; one is willingto sacrice anything or theperson that they love. Lustcares only or onesel, beingalmost selsh in a sensetowards the other person. In present day manypeople base a lot o thingson movies and televisionshows that one watches. Not ully realizing that themajority o the show is inact depicting lust and not

love. It shows the viewerswhat they believe theaudience wishes to see, andin todays society thats lust.No longer is love the maincharacteristic that showsup, because people wouldmuch rather see a couplemaking out, then watching

just how much they loveone another.

Lust or love, many willdebate on what they eeltowards their signicantother when analyzing onesrelationship. Is there literallynothing that one is willingto sacrice to be with theperson they love? I theanswer is yes, one mostlikely eels nothing morethan lust.
