Brother’s Keeper Program – Our Beloved Alpha Mentors

“Brother’s Keeper is a service program developed with the mission of advocating for and improving the quality of life for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. brothers, their spouses, and widows who are retired, are elders, have disabilities and are ailing. Upon identification of need, the Brother’s Keeper Program also provides assistance to mature and ailing members of its communities.” I am extremely blessed to have several Alpha Mentors. Some of my mentors are older and some are younger. They have mentored me concerning my finances, taxes, personal and professional life, and much more. Admittedly, I am extremely grateful for their love, concern, and devotion. Having Alpha Mentors has been a true blessing for me and a real Alpha privilege.

For this article, I will address our Brother’s Keeper Program from the standpoint of the benefits that Brothers obtain from providing assistance for our mature and ailing Brothers. I will attempt to do this by addressing the mentorship that our mature Brothers provide during the implementation of this outstanding national program. As such, I will address Alpha mentoring through three distinctive lenses. Strategic Lens Utilizing an alpha mentor can be an import strategic step in a Brother’s life. That is, Alpha mentors can make recommendations regarding how to conduct oneself in a professional and private setting. We all understand what it means to be “Alpha Sharp” from a standard of dress to a standard of conduct. Nonetheless, some Brothers need additional support when they are “outside of the house.” This is where an Alpha mentor can be very valuable with suggesting the proper decorum. Further, Alpha mentors can provide support to Brothers regarding investment strategies. Many Alpha Mentors are very successful, and they have learned through experience how to make the best investments and plan for retirement. As such, they can aid younger Brothers in making the proper decisions regarding their financial portfolios. Finally, an Alpha Mentor can advise a Brother in making the proper tactical moves in corporate America. Often, Brothers need guidance in the corporate environment to help them understand the subtle issues ranging from how to communicate with their supervisor, when and how to utilize HR, what percentage to invest in a 401K, how to complete an appraisal evaluation, etc. Political Lens Form a political point of view, Alpha Mentors can aid Brothers navigate corporate America by introducing them to leaders in their field, encouraging them to join professional organizations, convincing them to write technical papers or publish articles. We all understand the value of visibility in the corporate environment, and an Alpha mentor can provide assistance to a Brother to help them focus their talents to get the maximum political advantage. Additionally, Alpha Mentors can provide counseling as to when to start an advance degree, or help a Brother pick a major that will assist him with climbing the corporate ladder. Clearly, this author understands that a Brother should pick a degree program of personal interest, but an Alpha Mentor can provide advice as to how to tailor a Brother’s educational desire that benefits the corporation and Brother politically.

Alpha mentors can also provide assistance to Brothers regarding Alpha politics. A seasoned Alpha Mentor understands the political environment of the Fraternity, and he can help a Brother launch a new service project or contact a corporate entity to get things done in a timely manner. Alpha Mentors through their personal contacts can often call the correct resource to move a project along or have an issue addressed immediately. They can also bring the necessary votes to the table to move an idea from conception to reality. At the local level, Alpha mentors are very useful as they have the contacts in “city government” to move a professional or personal issue forward. Also, an Alpha mentor can assist a Brother with picking an insurance agent, selecting an accountant, securing a doctor, choosing a real-estate agent, etc. Cultural Lens As we all know, each chapter has their nuances and cultural preferences. An Alpha mentors can help a Brother understand the intellectual aspects of a chapter so that a Brother is not blindsided by chapter politics. Understanding the culture of a chapter is critical for chapter programming and Brotherhood support. Knowing which “sacred cow” not to affront can help a Brother with how he is perceived at the chapter level. Being considerate of chapter culture helps a Brother know when to plan personal and professional events where he desires Brothers’ participation. This nuance of cultural understanding is not to be overlooked as some Brothers can be offended when a Brother plans an event near or on a special chapter occasion. Likewise, a Brother is put-off when chapter’s Brothers do not attend his planned event. Hence, an Alpha mentor can assist a Brother navigate the cultural aspects of a chapter. Conclusion In closing, having an Alpha mentor and supporting the Brother’s Keeper Program is a special attribute of being an Alpha. We all understand that membership has its privileges. For this reason, older Brothers are expected to mentor younger Brothers as this is a fundamental aspect of Brotherhood. As such, every Brother has the inalienable right to seek Alpha Mentors, and older Brothers should always be open to being an Alpha Mentor for younger Brothers.

Fraternally, Brother Dr. Jeriod D. Patterson Rocky Mountain District Director Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

GREETINGS MY BROTHERS!

It is with great humility and joy that I write this note. 2012 has been a great year, full of many blessings and teachings.

Delta Psi Lambda continues to move forward and hold the name of Alpha Phi Alpha in high esteem.

In this Winter Edition, we continue to highlight chapter programs, events, and community outreach.

As I reflect upon this past year, I meaure not only how much I have grown within myself, but I can also measure how much our chapter has grown. In the past editions, I talked about the importance of giv-ing back to our community - which is part of the core mission of Alpha. But it is also important as Alpha’s to serve as mentors to each other.

One aspect of our chapter which sets us a part is the strong bond that the older brothers have with the younger brothers. The trust of allowing Alpha leadership to flourish by sharing their knowledge, as well as their advice on how to navigate the Fraternity, as well as life itself.

I would like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers to myself and my family while I was ill with pnemonia. Through that trying time, I pulled through with the love and support I felt from the brotherhood, close family and friends. I am “back in the saddle” as our chapter presi-dent Bro. Claude Harris put it, and it feels good to be back!

I look forward to sharing many more moments with each of you this year, and many more years to come in this bond, we call Alpha Phi Alpha.

Fraternally submitted,

As voter registration closed on October 9, 2012 for this election cycle, the Rocky Mountain District (RMD) successfully completed a yearlong process of Voter Registration in the State of Colorado. The RMD achieved 114% of its Voter Registration Drive objective as set by the Western Regional Vice President and General President, Brother Aaron Crutison.

The RMD participated in eight Voter Registration Drives, at various Denver area high schools, churches, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Soriitory MODEL Man event held September 15, 2012 at the Denver Marriott Hotel (Include Photo). The RMD and our alumni chapters of Delta Psi Lambda – Denver and Iota Omicron Lambda – Colorado Springs, is pleased to have participated in our Fraternities National Program, “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People”, and this year’s theme of “First of All We Vote”.

As men of Alpha, we know that while this year’s election will be decided on November 6, 2012, we will continue to support our National Voter Program as we continue to work for voter registration for the mid-term election in 2014. Therefore, Brothers, we will continue our efforts to support Voter Registration in the State of Colorado, and we will continue to seek your support in this effort. (Pictured in Photo: L-R Bro. Brothers,

I greet you in the mighty name of Alpha Phi Alpha. Let me begin, by stating that you have my sincere thanks for bestowing me with the honor of being elected your chapter president. I certainly recognize that I ran unopposed, but nothing is more valued than the trust you have placed in me for the work of Alpha. I will honor your trust in me, by ALWAYS putting the needs of this chapter above any one man.

When I was elected chapter president in May, one of biggest fears was the fear of what could I write about in Manly Deeds. As we have many highly educated brothers in this chapter, I couldn’t think of anything profound to say. And so, like most decisions of this nature, I decided to push the decision off until a later date. So summer came, which gave me an unusual treat. For the first time in a number of years, I’ve been able to read solely for pleasure. And like any new gift, I overindulged on it. Of the many books I read this summer, one of my favorites was Alpha Phi Alpha: A Legacy of Greatness and Transcendence by Gregory S. Parks.

This book really got me thinking about our great fraternity, and where it is heading. The book focuses on the organizational identity of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity throughout our more than century of existence. Among the questions that this book investigates are; 1) Whether we are still living up to the standards of our Jewels, and 2) Whether we are living up to our mission statement of “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.”

The book examines our storied history, and the work our Jewels, General Presidents and notable Brothers since that “Ice Cold Tuesday in December”. The book examines Alpha’s impact during the civil rights movement, economic justice era and into the twenty first century. The book goes on to question, in this Obama “post-racial” society, are we as an institution still relevant. The book asks the most difficult yet relevant question “Has our identity been reduced to hazing and stepping?” To say the least, I spent a lot of time in introspection on this and many other Alpha related questions.

With all of the above questions, and many more swirling through my head, I was sworn into this office in September, with the over-arching question, of whether we are doing the work of Alpha. With all of these questions in my head, I gave my inaugural address and spoke to some of the things that I wished to accomplish during my administration.

My first goal was/is to continue our impact on the Denver Metro Area. To say the least, I am already impressed with the work that I have seen done in the name of Alpha. I see a Brother starting up a tutoring program that is bringing MEN before boys. This work is taking place without fanfare or complaint. I have seen brothers in chef coats, turning out incredible dishes, in an effort to raise money for scholarships for children they do not know. And most recently, I have seen brothers give up four weekends in a row, for this frater-nity with the only goal being “the better making of men”.

My second goal mentioned was for a successful 65th Western Region Convention. We are well on our way through the planning of our convention. But if we continue our ways, and if the above is any indication of who WE are as Alpha Men, I have no doubt that we will live up to my goals for this chapter year.

Finally and most importantly, when I think about what has been done since I have been in the 211th house of Alpha I am inspired and know that we as a chapter and indeed this fraternity still have relevance in the twenty first century. In closing, I invite brothers to take a moment for personal introspection. Are YOU living up to the expectations of our Jewels. Are you living up to the words of General President Charles H. Garvin on how “An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity but how much can I do for the Fraternity?”

Fraternally,Bro. Claude HarrisChapter President
