Google was co-founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were students at Stanford University and the company was first incorporated as a privately held company on September 7, 1998.

Internet giant Yahoo! began in 1994 as a personal project by David Filo and Jerry Yang, electrical engineering students at Stanford University. Initially a simple list of interesting websites, Yahoo.com began to file these Internet links in topical categories as the list grew. Thus, the basic concept of an editorially selected, tiered database of we blinks was introduced.

Meta Search Engines- sends requests to several search engines simultaneously and compiles the results. AltaVista.

Boolean is implied in man y search engines but still a valuable method for narrowing

Boolean logic- Uses operations with keywords to

narrow such parameters Operations include AND, Or, and. *,+,-,

Not And narrows results by searching for

pages that contain both keywords. Or responds results by pages that

contain either of the keyword. Quotation marks narrow results by

searching for phrases.

Different language support- searches for words in different languages

Spell Checker- gives suggestions if the word keyed for the search is misspelled

Phonebook: uses phone numbers to search for locations and addresses

Math- solves basic math problems and converts equivalents

Individual search engine- uses computer programs called “spiders”, “crawlers”, or “robots” to match key search words with the web pages that contain them.

Google is a major player in the online advertising industry. Every time you search Google, you'll see ads displayed along with your results. Those ads are never "mixed in" with the results - there is no "pay to play" on Google... which is one of the reasons Google became the most popular search engine in the first place. But the sponsored text-link ads above and to the right of the results generate a great deal of money for Google. These ads are known as "Google Adwords."
