International Bavarian Academic Centres Promoting Worldwide Exchange

Bavaria Reaches out to the World

Are you looking for just the right degree pro-gramme abroad? Would you like to come to Bavaria as an international student, but you need a scholarship? Whether it’s information on internships and travel aid or just general tips on coordinating studies abroad, Bavaria’s inter- national academic centres are university service facilities that provide knowhow, valuable contacts and even financial aid. The cen-tres were established by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts to promote cooperation and exchange in regions that have traditionally had close contact with Bavaria.

“We proudly present ...” seems to be the appropriate expression – and yes, we are truly proud of everything we’re able to present to you here in the pages of our English-language edition of uni.vers Studies:

Dear students and prospective students from around the world,

Our International Office is the engine that drives our many foreign exchange endeavours. About 1,200 international students are currently living and studying in Bamberg. Some of them have decided to pursue a degree here in Ger-many while others are in Bamberg on a one- or two-semester exchange.

We are also proud of the role that our university plays in making the city more international and in expanding the multicultural mindset of the broader Bamberg community. The city, whose central district has been a UNESCO World Her-itage site since 1993, never fails to make a last-ing impression on foreign visitors. Numerous university facilities are located in this historic part of town, meaning that Bamberg’s valuable cultural heritage is an integral part of academic life!

Firstly, we are proud of our university. With roughly 13,500 students, 160 professors and 650 research assistants, we have maintained a relatively modest size, and the personal atmos-phere and advisory services that we provide are second to none. We offer an exceptional range of degree programmes, many of which are geared towards providing ideal academic con-ditions for international students.

So, have a look and find out what makes us spe-cial for you!

Yours,

Godehard Ruppert,President of the University of Bamberg

on the outskirts of town, but rather are spread around the entire World Heritage city. However, Bamberg’s manageable size means that lecture halls and classrooms are never far apart and that it’s not uncommon for students to bump into someone they know and decide at a mo-ment’s notice to go for a cup of coffee – some-thing that’s particularly advantageous for new students getting to know each other!

I can wholeheartedly recommend studies at the University of Bamberg: It’s a perfect place for top-notch academics combined with an easy-going lifestyle! Yours,

Andreas Starke Lord Mayor of Bamberg

What is it that makes Bamberg a special place to study? One factor is the attractive range of sub-jects offered at the University of Bamberg. This broad course offering has earned our institution a place among the best ranked universities in Germany. Allowing for various interruptions, the university is one of the oldest in Bavaria and its programmes in psychology, information systems, economics and the social sciences are among the best in Germany. One thing that cer-tainly contributes to the charm of our university is its location within the city; our faculties are not clustered together on a campus somewhere

“In my opinion, Bamberg is the best place to study. The beautiful city with its historic places, the UNESCO World Heritage, a manageable size and of course the beer – all these factors make Bamberg a very livable city. My mas-ter’s degree programme in European Ethnology is very interesting, and because of the rather small groups, the support provided by professors and lecturers is very good. For me, it is very important to constantly improve my German, and because I have many German friends, this works out per-fectly!”

“After 4 years work experience in the field of Information Systems, I de-cided to do a master’s degree. While searching, I came across the master’s programme in International Software System Sciences offered by the Uni-versity of Bamberg. I really like the wide range of specialisation and the large amount of project work in which I can become acquainted with inno-vative technologies. Bamberg, with its historic old town, museums, theatres and the beautiful landscape surroun- ding the city, will definitely embrace your soul! The university itself contrib-utes to the diversity of cultural and so-cial life in the city.”

A long history, a touch of Italy, modern so-phistication. In Bamberg, the World Heritage city, a unique cityscape formed of contrasting elements is shaped by the enduring marks of the many eras of its long and varried his-tory. Bamberg’s flair and genial, cosmopoli-tan atmosphere are unmistakable. Here, we present you with seven short stories about an endearing, vibrant city; a city that has at-tracted visitors since the beginning and a city whose own roads have always led out into a world of possibilities.

Internationality as a Way of Life

The University of Bamberg is both young and quite old. In 1647, Bamberg’s Prince Bishop, Otto Voit von Salzburg, founded the origi-nal House of Wisdom as a centre for humanist education. The Jesuits, who were responsible for the establishment of the institution, had al-ready spread out across nearly every continent in order to strengthen religious faith through discovery and what they regarded to be the true knowledge of God’s works. The protagonists of the University of Bamberg’s re-founding in 1979 managed to preserve this cosmopolitan sense of curiosity and wanderlust. Over 300 partner-ships in 60 countries are a testament to this in-ternational focus. At the University of Bamberg, internationality is more than just some hollow buzzword; it is indeed a way of life.

Bamberg’s Illustrious Ruling Couple

Even in the Middle Ages, Bamberg was a major travel destination. King Henry II and his wife Cu-nigunde, who would later be crowned emperor and empress of the Holy Roman Empire, estab-lished the bishopric of Bamberg and commis-sioned the construction of a cathedral – a move that would immensely increase the prominence of the region. Incidentally, Henry and Cunigun-de remain the only ruling couple ever to have been canonised and you still can’t get far in Bamberg without encountering their legacy.

The Sweet Life: Italy in Bamberg, Bamberg in Italy

Vespa scooters speed down ancient, nar-row streets. A couple sits in front of an ice cream shop. On the river, the gondolier pass-es ... This is Italy, right? It doesn’t take much to make Bamberg appear Italian. Built on its seven hills – like Rome – the World Heritage city is bursting with Mediterranean flair, not least of all due to Little Venice and its quaint fish-ermen’s houses, the gondoliers, and the water which seems to be everywhere; with the Regnitz river, the Main-Danube canal and the many wa-terways crisscrossing the old city, it is never far off. The ready availability of good pizza certainly doesn’t hurt either!

A Look at Bamberg’s Literary History

One of the most famous works of world liter-ature was translated in Bamberg: Ulysses by James Joyce. The colossal task was undertaken by the late Hans Wollschläger whose achieve-ment earned him numerous prizes. But there are many more reasons why Bamberg de-serves more than a single page in the history of books and literature: the Bamberg State Library houses valuable medieval manuscripts that are included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The city is also home to a thriving contemporary literary scene.

Bamberg’s Primary Concern?

Those new to Bamberg often find themselves presented with something of a paradox. What exactly does it mean when someone says, “Shall we go for a beer on the cellar?” How can you be on a cellar? The answer to the riddle is ac-tually quite simple: In the summer months, local breweries store their barrels of beer in cellars – Keller in German – which were carved out of the rocky Bamberg hills. The beer gardens are located above these vaulted cellars and that means that sitting in a Bamberg beer garden also means sitting on the cellar and indeed on the barrels that we take such pleasure in emp-tying. And it’s not just the locals who enjoy it so much: Bamberg’s famous beer is a popular export worldwide.

Bamberg’s “Export Market”

Bamberg’s beer is not the only thing in high demand worldwide. The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra also enjoys an excellent international reputation and spends even more time abroad than the university president. Another major ex-port is the professional basketball talent of the Brose Baskets. Over the years, the nine-time German league champions have turned heads throughout Europe. The enthusiastic cheers and exceptional volume of the fans at home games has earned Bamberg the affectionate nickname Freak City, whereas visiting teams find themselves having to endure what is for them Franconian hell.

The Frankenjura!

From high on the limestone wall of the Röthel-fels cliff formation, a cry of relief sounds out over the beech forest. A Bamberg computer sci-ence student, Bernd, has had to overcome quite a bit: his own anxiety, a minor fear of heights and the crux section of a climbing route. The northern Frankenjura or Franconian Switzerland – referred to locally as die Fränkische – is one of the world’s largest and most renowned rock

climbing destinations, and Bamberg serves as something of a basecamp for all manner of out-door sports and nature exploration. The nearby Franconian Switzerland, Haßberge, Steigerwald and Upper Main Valley nature preserves are a paradise for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Making Bamberg Your New Home

What the City of Bamberg has to Offer to Its Newest Residents from Around the World

Spending a few fascinating days in Bamberg as a tourist is one thing, but what about those people who are not merely seeing the sights? What about those who are planning on calling Bamberg their new home? What resources are available to them? Who hand-les topics dealing with immigration and in-tegration? These issues are crucial for par-ticipation in social life and they are the first steps towards an amicable and functional community.

So, you’re new to Bamberg? How are you getting on? Moving to another country is a major un-dertaking – so much the better when the initial steps in your new home are as easy as possible. Because each newcomer arrives with unique qualifications and perspectives, individual, needs-based advisory and counselling services are crucial. Municipal agencies – especially the migrant council – specialise in providing in-dividually-tailored assistance to each recent immigrant. Counsellors will not only answer your questions, but will also help you to create a support plan to determine which integration programmes suit your particular needs. One of Bamberg’s iconic

“No, studying in Germany is not just a pro-ject for us! Coming to Bamberg next week is the beginning of living our dream ...” This is a message I received from one of our incoming exchange students. Live your dream – many students dream about spending time studying and living abroad, experiencing a new culture, learning a foreign language and getting to know other students from around the world. Here in Bamberg, you can do all these things at a distin-guished university located in a UNESCO World Heritage City.

More than 300 partner universities worldwide, and nearly 1,200 international students from about 90 countries make the Inter-national Office the ‘dream factory’ of the University of Bamberg. More than one third of all Bamberg students take part in an exchange programme during the course of their studies. This creates an open-minded and internationally oriented atmosphere in our classrooms, where, in ad-dition to the German students, you can meet international exchange students from Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Helsinki, Vi-enna, Budapest, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Istan-bul, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, New York, Mex-ico City, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Sydney and many other places.

Come to Bamberg and join our international student community! And live your dream ... We are looking forward to meeting you! Yours,

The university’s four faculties can be found at three primary locations.

1. City CentreStudents in the Humanities Faculty and the Faculty of Human Sciences and Education work and learn in historic buildings in and around the old city.

2. Feldkirchenstraße, a.k.a. “Feki”This modern building complex located on the east side of the city is home to both the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business Administration and the university’s Computing Centre.

3. The ERBA This modern building houses the Faculty of Information Systems and Applied Computer Science and various other subjects, and it’s located adjacent to the site of the 2012 Bavarian state garden show.

Beginning with the Academia Ottoniana in the 17th century and continuing with our present- day institution, the University of Bamberg has seen itself explicitly as a “House of Wisdom”. It was founded in 1647 by Prince Bishop Melchior Otto Voit von Salzburg as a centre for contem-porary humanistic education.

The “domus sapientiae” of past centuries is now home to the programmes offered by the university’s four academic faculties:• Humanities• Social Sciences, Economics

and Business Administration• Human Sciences and Education• Information Systems and

Applied Computer Science

The University of Bamberg is not a typical “cam-pus university,” as its buildings and facilities are spread throughout the city. This means that many students get to pursue their studies in the centre of the city’s listed World Heritage area.

Internationality as a Way of LifeThe University of Bamberg’s International Office

Each year, approximately 350 Bamberg students venture abroad with University of Bamberg ex-change programmes. Conversely, about 1,200 international students are currently living and studying in the World Heritage city. Some of them have decided to pursue a degree here

International Office director Dr. Andreas Weihe, Welcome

There’s a saying in German: Aller Anfang ist schwer. It essentially means that getting start-ed on something is always the most difficult part. But at the same time – and to paraphrase Hermann Hesse – there is something magical in each new beginning. In order to ensure that your first weeks in Bamberg are as magical and as smooth as possible, the university offers vis-iting students comprehensive language and ori-entation courses, leisure activities and the lan-guage tandem programme. Even finding a place to rest your head at the end of the day is easily done. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get started!

A Warm Welcome from the Welcome Center

Doctoral Studies in Bamberg

The Welcome Center is the central service facil-ity for all international doctoral candidates and visiting scholars at the University of Bamberg. Founded in 2010 as part of the International Of-fice, we support all students interested in pursu-ing a doctoral degree in Bamberg by providing extensive advisory services as well as practi-cal assistance in preparing for and realising a stay. Services include assistance with doctoral studies admission processes, visa and entry re-quirements, funding, finding accomodation and much more. By coordinating our services with those of the academic supervisors and various university and non-university institutions, the Welcome Center makes sure that international PhD students have an easy start in Bamberg and helps them settle in smoothly. We are regularly praised for our personalised, warm, competent

Diving into German with Intensive Language Courses

Before being assigned to a course group, you will complete an online German placement test in your home country. Following your arrival in Germany in either September or March, you will then attend an intensive German immer-sion course with an average group size of 15 students. Courses are held daily for four lesson units, making a total of 60 hours of instruction. The orientation programme also includes ses-sions focused on university enrolment, subject advisory services and an introduction to creat-ing a course schedule. In addition to a city tour and various activities in and around Bamberg, the leisure programme also includes two organ-ised excursions to other cities.

other leisure activities. The courses are geared both towards foreign exchange students who will be spending one or two semesters at our university and also towards foreign students who wish to earn a full degree in Bamberg and must therefore complete the German language examination (DSH) required for enrolment. The orientation programme provides you with an excellent opportunity to ease into your studies by becoming acquainted with our friendly and competent advisory staff, and it’s a great way to acclimatise to a new city and to the academic structures of a German university.

The Choice is Yours!

Finding the Right Degree Programme and Applying for Admission

Bachelor’s, Master’s and Teaching Degrees

The university currently of-fers 27 bachelor’s degree programmes, 49 master’s de-gree programmes, and also teaching programmes for all of Germany’s primary and sec-ondary schools (Grundschule, Mittelschule, Realschule, Gymna-sium and Berufliche Schulen).

Particularly in the humanities, many bachelor’s programmes have been conceived as joint-sub-ject degrees. This means that you study either two major subjects, or one major and two minor subjects. By combining subjects, you are able to tailor your studies to your individual interests or to your own particular post-university career plans.

Following the completion of your bachelor’s de-gree, there are numerous possibilities to tran-sition directly into a master’s programme at the University of Bamberg or to transfer from another university to pursue your master’s here. (See the overview on page 28–29.)

Applying for Admission

There are two distinct ways to study in Bam-berg as an international student: You can either choose to participate in an exchange programme or you can decide to pursue your studies here independently. If you are inter-ested in an organised exchange, then you will generally have to apply for a stay in Bamberg at your home university. If you choose to enrol as a regular student, the University of Bamberg’s International Office is responsible for process-ing your application. Please note: there are strict deadlines for the receipt of your application!

Further information can be found online at www.uni-bamberg.de/auslandsamt/studieren-in-bamberg

Admission Requirements – German Language Proficiency

If you choose to come to Bamberg independent of an exchange programme, you are required to possess a German Abitur or a comparable high-er education entry qualification from your native country in order to begin a bachelor’s degree. A completed degree comparable to the German bachelor’s is required for master’s studies. In order to complete a full degree at the Univer-sity of Bamberg, you must also pass the Ger-man Language University Entrance Examination (DSH). To help prepare you for this exam, the International Office and the university Language Centre offer a preparatory German course. Please be aware that degree programmes taught in English are exempt from German proficiency requirements.

Further information can be found online at http://anabin.kmk.org

This country-by-country database provides in-formation concerning evaluation and approval of foreign educational transcripts and certifi-cates.

www.daad.de/zulassung This German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) database provides information con-cerning which applicants must complete the en-trance examination and which may be granted direct admission.

Admission and Enrolment

Welcome! If your application is accepted, you will receive an official letter of admission. In-cluded in this letter is information on when you may enrol at the University of Bamberg. For those students who need to apply for a visa to study in Germany, the documentation required for this process is also provided.

Teaching Programmes

Teacher training represents an integral compo-nent of the University of Bamberg’s academic profile. Tomorrow’s teachers receive training that is both research-oriented and practically relevant. The Bamberg Centre for Teacher Trai-ning (ZLB) provides structural teaching and research support for instructors, researchers and students. It also ensures that our teacher training programmes can continue to improve and face the changing demands of the future.

www.uni-bamberg.de/lehrerbildung

In Bamberg, students can prepare for their first state examination in programmes specifically designed for all of the school systems available in Bavaria (with the exception of special needs education). In line with the university’s over- all subject spectrum, a particular focus is placed on languages and the cultural and social sciences.

Furthermore, students also have the opportuni-ty to acquire additional qualifications in educa-tional fields like guidance counselling or school psychology.

Vocational Schools with Specialisation in Social Education or Business Education

Teacher training for vocational schools spe-cialising in social or business education is offered in both bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes under the headings “Professional Education/Social Education and Social Services” and “Business Education”.

Teaching Programmes

International Study ProgrammesGlobalisation and technological advancement are the engine driving the steadily increasing internationalisation of societies. This develop-ment has also increased the demand for schol-ars whose academic pursuits have led them be-yond their own national borders.

The University of Bamberg provides numerous opportunities for pursuing international, fully integrated degree programmes with an integral study abroad component.

Our programmes foster the development of crucial core competencies like language profi-ciency, flexibility and cross-cultural skills and communication. These form an ideal basis for international careers in both the public and pri-vate sectors, in international organisations, or a foundation for doctoral studies worldwide. Graduates are members of an exclusive circle of scholars who have demonstrated exceptional motivation and commitment.

As a university, this is our way of accommo-dating progressive international integration

and weaving it into the fabric of our degree programmes.

The International Summer University in Bamberg

Part academic studies, part holiday: Every Au-gust, students and (prospective) teachers of German from around the globe gather in Bam-berg for four weeks. The International Summer University (ISU) provides an incomparable op-portunity for participants to study the history of German literature, improve language skills and to experience Franconian culture first-hand.

Four Unforgettable Weeks

“The summer university is like a model of an ideal world, a kind of dream world, in which students from the most diverse national and cultural back-grounds can spend time together and enjoy them-selves. It was like a big family – and for me, that’s the most important thing.“ Anton Latynin, Russia
