We are working with United Way to "adopt" 12 local children this Christmas. We have the names, ages, sizes and “wish lists” for these kids. What we need are individuals/ families to agree to purchase presents (preferably 4-5 gifts per child) for one or more children. In addition, you can deliver the presents to the child/family! Gifts need to be delivered by December 15. Please contact Pastor Elliot Smith if you are interested or have questions. Shoes 4 the Shoeless Campaign This fall you are invited to join a challenge, supporting an important local ministry - “Shoes 4 the Shoeless.” Our goal is to collect 3,000 pairs of athletic socks by November 23. We have also asked the high schools participating in the “More Than A Game” basketball tournament to partic- ipate in this challenge – with the ‘final count’ coming the weekend of the tournament. Several years ago the founder of this non-profit ministry, Chris Hofacker, was invited to our church to present the story of how her ministry began. Many of you were inspired as you heard stories of the hundreds of Dayton children this ministry touches. What is amazing is that this ministry has grown – and plans to distribute over 8,000 pairs of shoes and socks in 2014! In addition, each child will receive a Bible. You can read more about this ministry at their website: shoes4theshoeless.org. Socks can be delivered to the church and placed into the large barrel by the church office. No doubt, an attitude of thanksgiving is a rare virtue. An oldcartoon comes to mind that has Lucy asking Charlie Brown to helpher with some homework. “I'll be eternally grateful,” she promises.

“Fair enough. I've never had anyone be eternally grateful before,”Charlie replies. “Just subtract 4 from 10 to get how many apples thefarmer had left.”

Lucy says, “That's it! That's it! I have to be eternally grateful forthat? I was robbed! I can't be eternally grateful for this, it was tooeasy!”

With his blank stare, Charlie replies, “Well whatever you think isfair.”

“How about if I just say 'thanks, bro!'” Lucy responds.

Later, Charlie meets Linus who asks, “Where've you been, CharlieBrown?”

“Helping Lucy with her homework.”

Linus asks, “Did she appreciate it?”

Charlie answers, “At greatly reduced prices.”

Of course this greatly reduced gratitude is prevalent in the realworld as well. I know for me it’s easier to grumble than to choosegratitude. Someone criticizes me; but I’m inclined to snarl backrather than give thanks for honest friends. My softball game getspostponed and you’ll likely find me complaining rather than praisingGod for the much-needed rain. I come home from work and mymeal is not on the table. Why do I gripe rather than thank God thatI’m not one of the hungry millions who never get supper?

When I pause to appreciate, my list of things for which I’m thankfulis infinite: “My kids, my wife, my church family, Table Life (ourWednesday evening prayer meeting), Project Renewal (our much-needed facelift for our aging church building), the Pastor’s BibleClass, pumpkin scented candles, the Boston Red Sox, my dog,zero-turn radius mowers, …”

Start your own list and you’ll discover the world is bursting withreasons to shout “Thank you God!”

“We need to cultivate a spirit of cheerfulness,” says Ellen White.“Let us ever look on the bright side of life and be hopeful, full of loveand good works, rejoicing in the Lord always. “Let the peace of Godrule in your hearts,’ and “be ye thankful’ (Col. 3:15)” (Ellen White,That I May Know Him, p. 225.5)

In the end, gratitude is a choice. Iris Sauber explains, “It is a choiceto see things differently. When choosing to be grateful you arefocusing on all the things that are good or right in your life asopposed to the things that are not. Focus acts like a magnet; youattract those things on which you focus. By focusing on the thingsyou are grateful for, you give those aspects of your life more power.Your world begins to feel more full and alive.”

So choose to be thankful. You’ll be glad you did.

In thanks,

Pastor Karl

Open House for Latest Facility Updates By Pastor Dan StevensThe expanded men’s restroom at the north entrance and the S-3 classroom on the south side of the church, both on the main floor, arescheduled to be completed early next month. Separate Open Houses are scheduled for each room in November: the classroom will be onSabbath the 9th and the men’s bathroom will be on the 16th, two great reasons to be thankful in the month of thanksgiving.

The men’s restroom expands the facilities of the original and will look similar to the refurbished women’s restroom: tiled walls, private stallsand a handicap facility. The men will appreciate the addition of a Dyson hand dryer which will save money on paper towels.

The Café, as the S-3 classroom will be called, is an effort to make a friendlier space for our visitors who attend the Pastor’s Bible Class onSabbath mornings. It will include a service counter for refreshments, a fireplace for ambience and will be wired for technology with largescreen TV’s on three walls. The room can serve as an overflow room for services in the sanctuary. It will also be available for meetings, private Bible studies, and just a room to relax.

A new push is underway to raise funds for Project Renewal’s future improvements in the sanctuary and the children’s classrooms. A grantof $130,000 has been donated with the expectation that the church will match this amount by the end of the year. Progress reports of thisgoal will appear in the November and December bulletins.

Funding Project RenewalA Grant of $130,000

has been made towards future church improvements.By the end of the year, our goal is to match that grant

with an equal amount.

The Safety Signal

Recently the Safety Committee deployed an automated externaldefibrillator (AED) in a white wall cabinet in the narthex near theDeacons Room. The cabinet will make an emergency-in-progressalarm when the door is opened but it will shut off if the door isclosed. The alarm is not transmitted anywhere; never let this alarmprevent you from accessing the AED if needed. The bright greenZoll AED Plus was generously donated to the church by the

Kettering Health Network andit should be in service for manyyears to come. AED’s are usedto shock a person’s heart withelectricity in an attempt torestart the heart in the face ofcardiac arrest. The shock itselfis called “defibrillation” and formaximum effectiveness it mustbe delivered to the personwithin the first few minutes ofthe event rather than waitingfor professional rescuers suchas paramedics in an ambulance

to arrive. This would seem like a very scary thing to do and indeedon television shows it can look quite dramatic when done with thelarge metal paddles and the large defibrillator machine. The purposeof AED’s however is to make the process of setting up for anddelivering this life-saving shock as easy and non-scary as possible.Once an AED is turned on, it starts to give directions andcommands in a loud voice step-by-step right through to thedefibrillation shock. The Zoll AED Plus also has an easy to followcircular graphical user interface that indicates what is going on as itprogresses. When using an AED, ALWAYS REMEMBER to TURNIT ON FIRST. It analyzes the ECG/heart rhythm, it decides if ashock is needed, it charges up, it says to stay clear of the patientduring the shock, and it clearly instructs the user to press the shockbutton. It could not be easier. AED’s rarely make mistakes; they arealmost fool-proof. It is much more likely that an unresponsive (andpulseless) person would be hurt by not trying to use the AED thanby trying to use it.Ninety percent of the work of making an AED function properly isgetting the large sticky electrode pads onto the person in the correctlocation and firmly stuck down. The shock is delivered through thelarge electrode pads. The pad packaging has clear pictures andinstructions on where they should go and the pads themselves havepictures of where they should go, and there is also often a picture onthe AED about how to place the pads. The person’s chest needs tobe bared. One pad goes on the upper right chest below the collarbone and the other pad goes on the left lower thorax below thebreast and often partially on theside. In the world of the AED, anadult is defined as anyone from age8 up. A child is from age 0 up to age8. The adult “CPR-D Padz” for theZoll AED Plus are all in one pieceand shaped in the form of astraightened-out Z. See the figure ofthe pads:To apply the electrodes:

1. Tear open the electrode package (1) and unfold the electrodes.Look at the pictures on the package.2. Hold the CPR sensor and place the sensor on the middle of thevictim’s breastbone, using the sensor cross hairs as a guide.3. Press the CPR sensor with your right hand and pull the number2 tab to peel the protective backing from the electrode. Press theelectrode quickly, entirely and firmly to the victim’s skin.4. Press the CPR sensor with your left hand and pull the number 3tab to peel the protective backing from the electrode. Press theelectrode quickly, entirely and firmly to the victim’s skin.5. NOTE if the victim is large or there is a need to place theelectrode under a breast, you can tear away the lower pad at theperforated line and place it farther on the victim’s left. Place the padslightly to the victim’s left and below the victim’s left breast.6. The AED will instruct the user if and when to do chestcompressions on the victim. The user will press straight down on thecenter of the white plastic compression sensor with the red-crosshairs. The AED will verbally guide you to do good chestcompressions for rate and depth. The “pediatric” AED electrode shock pads are used for age 0 up toage 8. The need to shock persons of this age is very rare. Thepediatric pads are just two separate electrode pads connected bywires that need to be placed in the proper position. There are cleargraphics on the package of the pads and on the pads themselves toindicate this position. To apply the pediatric pads do the following:1. Place the indicatedround pad in the middle of thechest over the left side of thesternum and press it quickly, entirely, and firmly to thevictim’s skin.2. Place the indicatedsquare pad in the middle of theback directly between theshoulder blades right over thespine and press it quickly, entirely, and firmly to thevictim’s skin.3. Quickly remove the adult pads connector from the AED andplug the pediatric pads connector into the AED.4. Turn on the AED5. Note: the AED is stored with adult pads already connectedand ready to go.The AED will be maintained in a constant state of readiness andchecked by deacons on a weekly basis. CPR classes have beenadvertised and offered and that series is now complete. If yourepresent a group outside our church that would like to learn howto do CPR, please contact me for arrangements. I would be happyto assist with this. The class might be done in the church or in oneof the hospitals of the Kettering Health Network. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Nathan Beebe for agreeing to bethe Medical Director of the Kettering SDA Church AED Program.I am the administrative director of our program, a CPR instructor, and knowledgeable concerning AED’s. Please feel free to contact mewith questions or comments.
