We met on June 15 and went to Estes Park for anenjoyable day. The weather was beautiful.

The tour through the museum was very interesting. The older trucks were beautiful and the restoration donein every detail, including the 23karot gold trim. After thetour for lunch some members went back into Estes,

others went to the National Park. and the rest to the ballfields park.

There was no official meeting, just announcments forthe Havana Cruise and the July 31 Buffalo Bill OrphanCar Show in Golden.

Please see the flyer for the August melodrama atHeritage Square. Remember the deadline to RSVP. Alsokeep in mind for the September 10th Drive yourStudebaker day. I would like to do something to have theStudebakers out. Let me know of any ideas you mighthave.

Also a BIG THANKS to Cary Dietz and his friendMark who had followed us down the Big ThompsonCanyon. We stopped for break in Longmont, when wegot ready to leave the ‘57 President refused to start. After testing was completed we found one problem, thefuel had vapor locked and the coil decided to stopworking. So Cary took me to a nearby Parts Store to geta new coil. Once it was put on the car had cooledenough it started, everything was fine.

The Havana Cruise was very successfull –so manycars and thanks to Arden and Gloria for working a shift.

Sema Action Network (SAN) Joins Coalition to Save the Bonneville Salt Flats

The SAN joined a number of prominent organizations in forming the “Save the Salt Coalition” to pro-

tect the Bonneville Salt Flats (BSF) from continued deterioration due to salt

brine removal from potash mining. The Coalition is now working with govern-

ment officials, mine operators and others to develop a permanent program to

replenish the salt.

In addition to the SAN, founding members of the Coalition include the Bonne-

ville Nationals (BNI), Save the Salt Foundation, Source Interlink Media, Southern

California Timing Association (SCTA), SEMA and Utah Salt Flats Racing Associa-

tion (USFRA).

The BSF is a unique geological formation that is also central to the history of

motorsports and the industries that support motorsports. Scores of world land speed records have

been set on the densely packed remnants of a huge prehistoric lake. The BSF has been listed on the

National Register of Historic Places and has been designated an Area of Critical Environmental

Concern.

For more information, please visit the “Save the Salt Coalition” website at www.savethesalt.org.

The person who calculated this bit of information is now and has been a

professor at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown for the last

forty some years. A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses

800 gallons of gas a year. A vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons of

gas a year. So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce gasoline consumption by

320 gallons per year. The government claims 700,000 clunkers have been replaced so that’s 224

million gallons saved per year. That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil. 5 million barrels is

about 5 hours worth of US consumption. More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel

costs about $350 million dollars. So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350

million. We spent $8.57 for every $1.00 saved. I’m pretty sure they will do a better job with our

health care though.

ITS LOW PRICS IS A

NATION-WIDE SENSATION

Leave it to alert America to pick a stand-

out style favorite from all the cars at the auto

shows! From coast to coast, to hear people

talk, there isn’t even a close rival to the 1937

Studebacker Dictators and Presidents in smart

design!

And, added to the thrilling eye-appeal of

Studebaker’s new silvery “winged victory”

radiator grilles and louvers.

There’s more real room for passengers—

and for luggage—in these spotlight cars of

1937 than you ever expected to get in any car!

They’re the worlds first cars with the dual

economy of the sensational new Fram oil

Cleaner and the gas-saving overdrive! They have the world’s only doors that stay closed tightly even if shut only

lightly! Their exclusive new dual range steering gear cuts the turning effort of parking in half!

They’re the first cars, too, to offer built-in warm air windshield defrosters! They’re the world’s only cars with that

great safety advancement, the automatic hill holder. But you can’t half appreciate all that these Studebakers offer un-

til you drive them. Do so—now!

This car was manufactured at the Studebaker factory in England as the

last production before the outbreak of World War II. It was purchased by

a Norwegian, whose family name was KROGNES, & shipped to his

home of Oslo. When Norway was invaded, he, like hundreds of his

fellow Norwegians, took the car to the mountains north of Oslo & hid it to

keep it from being seized by the Germans. His family was building a

new mountain cabin, or “Hytte”, & the basement had already been dug.

They built a ramp down into the basement, drove the car down into the

pit, & covered the car with a tarp, hay & lumber to hide it completely.

There it spent the duration of World War II. After, the owner retrieved it

& drove it daily until he suffered a stroke in 1956. The car was stored &

turned over to his nephew, also named Krognes, who did a partial

restoration & drove the car occasionally. He sold it to the father of the

present owners, (he was an Air Force officer stationed in Oslo) in 1972.

His three children inherited the car last August following his death. So

over seven decades, this vehicle has had only 3 owners. The car has

been in storage here in Great Falls since 1984. Their father had always

intended to do a complete restoration on the vehicle at some point &

had, over many years, purchased many used & NOS parts for the car.

These parts are part of the purchase price. Most of these would be

unavailable today, making this a great deal for someone interested in

this unique automobile. Contact info: Katy Thomas—313 28th Ave. NW—
