The modern children’s classic Goodnight Mister Tom is treated to an enchanting stage adaptation thanks to distinguished director David Wood.

The beguiling tale is set during World War II when a young boy evacuated to the idyllic English countryside forms an unlikely friendship with elderly recluse Tom Oakley.

Hear how David Wood adapted Michelle Magorian’s heart-warming story for the stage at a special In Conversation event at the theatre on May 19, organised by Seven Stories.Theatre Royal, from £14.50 theatreroyal.co.uk

Quirky children’s classic Horton Hears A Who! has provided unlikely inspiration for two artists exhibiting at Vane Gallery this month, whose work explores conflict and environmental catastrophe.

In Dr Seuss’ book the eponymous Horton protects a miniscule world, exploring inclusivity and kindness which have motivated Michael Mulvihill and Elizabeth Saveri to create miniature paintings and drawings, touching on the art world’s increasing obsession with scale and production. We’re willing to bet that Trinidadian-born songwriting superstar Billy Ocean has more Gold and Platinum records under his belt than you’ve had hot dinners.

The R&B and Motown talent has sold a whopping 30m records worldwide, and with tracks as good as Caribbean Queen, When The Going Gets Tough, and Love Really Hurts Without You it’s not hard to see why.

When the title of a show warns you ‘goggles required’, you can be fairly certain it’s no average kids’ show.

Blue Peter and Factomania ‘science guy’ Greg Foot is on hand to answer those pressing questions we all want the answer to: why do your fingers go wrinkly in the bath? And why do beans make you fart?! Accompanied by weird and wonderful experiments using giant flamethrowers, indoor rainbows and space rockets.

Think you know Pete Doherty? Think again. The rambunctious ruffian has chilled out somewhat since his late 90s drug-fuelled assault on indie music with Libertines cohort Carl Barat.

The controversial songwriter’s lyrical talent has never been in question (although his life

choices certainly have), and last year’s single Flags Of The Old Regime demonstrates a more settled artist who has lost none of his poetic charm.Riverside, £26.50

POST-IT NOTE CONFESSIONS

Walking through Ouseburn this morning I saw the oddest thing - one guy tightrope

walking over the burn while another was pushing a pram filled with pigeons. Bizarre!

This month we ask: What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen people doing in Newcastle?

I saw a woman pushing

a triple pram with her

elbows because her

hands were holding the

Greggs’ pasty she was

eating, and all three kids

had a sausage roll.

I’ve seen it a few times, but it still throws me that there’s a beatboxing Spiderman near Grey’s Monument. Today he had a mini Spiderman with him too!

Next month we ask: What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen animals doing in Newcastle? Tell us at [email protected]

MAN ABOUTTOON

with Ben WhitfieldI have a sweet tooth. In fact, I think I have 31 of them (the other one likes cheese), and they’re partial to a slice of cake most afternoons, and some mornings.

Fortunately, my city centre wanderings have provided many wonderful patisseries, bakeries and the like, which I can work through in a week (or three days if it’s a tough one).

Les Petits Choux (Leazes Crescent) deals in profiteroles and eclairs and scones and...you get the idea. They’re delicious, and choux pastry is the specialty here. The Ferrero Rocher profiterole is particularly good.

The girls at Pet Lamb Patisserie (Grainger Market) are the queens of cupcakes and they are always experimenting with new ones, though the salted caramel ones are hard to beat.

The Brownie Bar (Eldon Garden) is amazing, and the Chocolate Orange one is my personal go-to. I’m also partial to a Brownie Bomb.

Finally, I seem to spend far too long at the Great British Cupcakery, where the window display catches me every time. If I do manage to make it past, I end up heading back for a milkshake (I may have a problem).

If I arrive at the above to find everything sold out, you folks have a lot to answer for!getintonewcastle.co.uk

If you didn’t already know, South Shields lass Sarah Millican is a big deal – so much so, she’s playing 10 nights at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House between now and September, which means you’ve got no excuse not to see her. Here’s more…

In the past, when you put Sarah outside she asked things like: ‘Why? Where is the taxi? Do I need a cardie? There’ll be wasps. I’ve nothing to sit on. Is that poo? Can we go home?’ Things have changed. Now she has outside slippers, can tell a chaffinch from a tit, but she still can’t distinguish between an owl and her husband’s asthma.

The mis-match of her strait-laced appearance and her filthy jokes has become her trademark. “One of my early reviews said I looked like a primary school teacher with the mouth of a biker, which I always quite liked,” she says.

In 2014, she started an online magazine called Standard Issue, because she didn’t like the ones on the newsstands. Of the fashion pages she says, “A coat for £1,200? My first car cost less than that.”

She likes appearing on the brainy telly quiz QI. “I was so scared the first time I went on, but the didn’t go to university chip on my shoulder has long since been eaten. Now I love it.”

Sarah and husband Gary Delaney have three pets, all of whom are named after TV characters. There are cats Lieutenant Ripley (Alien), Chief Brody (Jaws) and dog Commander Tuvok (Star Trek: Voyager). “We are officially awesome at naming pets,” says Sarah.

She was one of the voices for the BBC’s Walk on the Wild Side, where she voiced an otter singing Barry Manilow’s Copacabana in the bath, a lioness discussing her partner’s Elton John-style haircut, and an owl with a creepy neighbour. Take a trip down the rabbit hole thanks to Laing Art Gallery’s curious new exhibition.

Meet the characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, from the all-knowing grin of the Cheshire Cat, the flustered White Rabbit, bonkers Mad Hatter and the foul-tempered Queen of Hearts.

This new exhibition from the British Library, with additional loans from the Victoria & Albert Museum, delves into the inspirations behind illustrators, artists, musicians, filmmakers and designers who have based their creations on Carroll’s beguiling tale over the last 150 years.

Illustrations by Peter Blake, Salvador Dali and Mervyn Peake will be on display, demonstrating the breadth of influence the fantastical story has had on generations of artists.Laing Art Gallery, price varies laingartgallery.org.uk
