The super-clever Sara Pascoe arrives in Newcastle any day now with her new tour Animal, which she says is the other half of a story she started in his first book Animal: An Autobiography of the Female Body. So, if like us, you’re wondering what on earth is going on, finish the book and head to The Stand this month.

The new show is Sara’s chance to explore everything she didn’t get a chance to in the book. “The book came first and deals with evolution and human beings as animals – particularly female humans as animals. There were lots of other areas that I hadn’t been able to touch which I’ve mined for the show – from evolution and Oedipus to Lewisham wildlife and Jason Donovan,” she says.

She became a vegan as part of fellow comic Josie Long’s One Hundred Days To Make Me A Better Person project, though she’s a bit rubbish at it sometimes. “I still have struggles with it. People shouldn’t feel bad if they slip up. Everyone has accidentally eaten chocolate or a whole lump of cheese when they were drunk; those things happen and I think it’s alright to talk about it. But there are a very small number of vegans who would have us killed. They would have us killed and wear our skin.”

She wanted to be an actor before a comedian. “At 14 my mum made me join a drama group as a punishment for having a party when she was out, and I fell so deeply in love with it that I knew I was going to dedicate my life to putting on hats and voices.”

Actor, stand-up and writer, Sara still has more career moves to tick off her list. “Professional gymnast! No, but I do think about things. I’ve been thinking about Strictly Come Dancing recently. I watched the last series and I loved it so much, but I thought: I’m not having my teeth whitened and being fake tanned, and I’m not wearing dresses!”The Stand, £12, thestand.co.uk

Lights, camera, action! At the Charlotte Gardiner Academy of Performing Arts, we strive to enhance performing arts learning through fun, inclusive and collaborative teaching. To us, the whole world’s a stage! With high standards of performing, children are taught professionally, giving a solid grounding across the three disciplines; singing, dancing and acting. Teaching is creative and diverse and students are encouraged to express themselves in a nurturing and warm atmosphere. We endeavour to empower students with a life-long love and appreciation of the performing arts where they can reach their potential. Children of all abilities are welcome; the main aim of our classes is enjoyment! With a commitment to excellence, we don’t do ‘good’, we do ‘outstanding’!

DERREN BROWN

19 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

Derren Brown definitely saw a UK tour of his latest show Miracle, which ran for 10 weeks in the West End, coming long before we did. He pops into Theatre Royal this month for what is guaranteed to be a baffling evening of psychological illusion. Here’s more...

Derren is full of illusion, magic and psychological mischief, which makes him a little tough to tie down, but he does tell us: “I’m often dishonest in my techniques, but I’m always honest about my dishonesty,” which is the truth (and what he wants you to think!).

His latest TV show, Pushed to the Edge, caused a lot of controversy. We have no idea why some viewers were offended by Derren brainwashing members of the public into murdering a man by pushing him off a roof. Not his funniest moment, we admit, but an interesting look at how social compliance can make someone do just about anything. If you see a fenced-off area in Grey Street as you head into the theatre, don’t panic.

In case you missed it, his TV work also includes recreating a zombie apocalypse (very funny), playing Russian Roulette live on TV (not so brilliant, but good at the end), and travelling to the US to persuade practitioners in the fields of psychic powers, Christian evangelism, New Age theories, alien abduction and contacting the dead to endorse him (mad, but interesting viewing).

He’s got a parrot called Rasputin, who is rather clever (check out Derren’s YouTube channel to see him work out a tricky Lego puzzle).

For those of you who like being scared witless by a man who made a person push another human being off a building (what’s wrong with you?), Derren Brown’s Ghost Train opens at Thorpe Park this summer. “It’s been an extraordinary opportunity to have fun with the latest technology and let my imagination run wild,” says Derren. We’ll let you folks test it first!Theatre Royal, theatreroyal.co.uk

New tricksWhen: June 20-25

The legendary Barry Manilow returns to the Metro Radio Arena this month with more romantic pop, silk scarves and showmanship than you could possibly imagine. The 72-year-old (he doesn’t look it - though we’re unsure what his look actually is), has more than 50 years in the music business and has been picking up platinum albums, music awards and Fanilows around the world throughout his career. Here’s more…

His Fanilows (we’re not making that up!) have included some of music’s biggest names. Bob Dylan stopped him at a party in 1988, hugged him and said, “Don’t stop what you’re doing, man. We’re all inspired by you.”

His songs really do make the whole world sing – to date he’s sold more than 80m records.

Though he famously writes the songs, Manilow didn’t write some of his biggest hits, including I Write the Songs (ironically)and Mandy, which was originally Brandy.

He learnt how to perform from Bette Midler while working as a pianist at the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse in New York City, in the early 1970s. Manilow explained: “I learned how to do a show. I had no idea. I never even paid attention to performance.”

Break out those silk scarves, people - Barry Manilow is back

He writes the songs

Metro Radio Arena, June 12, from £19.75, metroradioarena.co.uk

Manilow is just as handy with an advert jingle as he is with a pop classic. He’s performed for the likes of KFC, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, and McDonald’s. We’re lovin’ it!

Though we’re huge fans of his music here at NE1, Australians thought blasting Manilow’s hits from 9pm-midnight would deter gangs of youths from congregating. We’re told a young man name Rico can be found wearing a diamond there most evenings, while a showgirl named Lola loves the policy.

The Manilow brand is a big seller, and shopmanilow.com (a popular search at NE1 HQ) is filled with merch – from the M+ fragrance to a full wardrobe of Manilow-faced shirts (see the NE1 Instagram account for the team’s recent purchases).

Should this month’s gig not satisfy your thirst for Manilow, head to manilowtv.com and for just $9.95 you can enjoy five curated videos each month, including concerts, award evenings, private shows, rehearsals and more.

A shirt Manilow once wore in concert was at the Smithsonian Museum but Manilow couldn’t resist joking about the honour, saying he always knew he would end up in an institution. The Smithsonian sent the shirt back. A tragic loss for their collection. Can we have it instead?
