DEDICATED PROFESSIONALS

Pöyry has dedicated staff widely recognised as underground specialists, including rock engineers, rock mechanists, geologists, environmental experts and other profes-sionals from related disciplines, who make up our core team. For specific issues, such as railway systems, traffic planning, safety engineering and financial engineering, we integrate into our project teams specialists from our pool of more than 6500 people. This provides a unique ability to effectively manage projects and minimise the complexi-ties of coordination.

SUPPORTING OUR CLIENT IN ALL PHASES

Underground project is major investment, requiring expert knowledge in all phases. Studies and analyses will ensure a solid base for the project right from the beginning. Thorough design and engineering as well as successful implementation will ensure the efficient and safe operation. Backed up by our track record of thousands of kilometres of tunnels, we provide comprehensive advice both on detailed issues but also from a holis-tic point of view. This experience of the entire project lifecycle, obtained from numerous assignments, enables us to provide economi-cally, environmentally and socially sustain-able and tailored solutions for underground projects worldwide.

ENSURING EFFICIENT AND SAFE OPERATION

Pöyry has special expertise in tunnel infra-structure, both in new projects and tunnel renovations. As the existing tunnels are aging, for instance ventilation and electromechani-cal equipment need to be developed. Vehicle emissions and fire safety in the case of emer-gency need to be carefully taken into account in the tunnel refurbishments.

Urban infrastructure lifeline

Tunnels are important elements of an inte-grated infrastructure system. Railway tunnels in urban areas are part of complex public transportation networks that may provide routes for metro, light rail or main railway lines. Also road tunnels help relieve congestion in city centres and highways.

Tunnels convey water and wastewater, keep-ing the urban society running. Excavation for metals and minerals requires special under-ground structures. Tunnels for pressurised water mains are key elements in the produc-tion of sustainable energy from hydropower plants.

We provide comprehensive consulting, design and project management services for the entire range of tunnel and other underground projects worldwide. Our clients can rely on our advise and support, to build and operate their infrastructure in a safe, environmentally-friendly and economical way.

Innovative solutions–proven methods

The Ring Rail Line in Helsinki capital region, Finland will constitute an efficient mass transit system to serve the entire Helsinki region and offer a quicker route to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. It will be an important circular rail route of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Pöyry is responsible for the detailed design of the access tunnels and rail tunnels, as well as rock excavation design of the underground stations. The project is carried out in consor-tium with other organisations.

SIMULATIONS HELP TO MAKE TUNNELS SAFE

Simulations can help to choose the optimal solution from various alternatives in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness. In contract to experimental tests, simulations can be ap-plied in a very early stage of the project.

Tunnel Emisor Oriente will be one of the larg-est wastewater tunnels in the world. With a total length of 62 km and running up to 200 m below ground level, the tunnel will significantly reduce the risk of flooding in Mexico City improving the safety and well-being of the inhabitants. The new tunnel will add about 150 cubic meters of water per second once completed.

The Nant de Drance pump-storage power plant is situated in the Swiss Alps between the two lakes Lac d’Emosson and Lac Vieux Emosson. The whole scheme will be realised underground, with the two main caverns located around 600 m below the surface. They are designed to host six vario-speed pump turbines of 150 MW each, the trans-former units and the electrical switch-gear. Other caverns will contain the upstream and downstream valves or serve for construction purposes.

Excavation is carried out using EPB TBMs. The diameter of the tunnel is 8.7 m for excava-tion and 7 m once finished. Pöyry is provid-ing advisory services in this major project during its construction. Pöyry´s responsibili-ties include scheduling, risk management, communication management, performance monitoring of the tunnel boring machines and the installation of Pöyry’s 2DOC underground data management system.

The headwater system has a twin lay-out, each part comprising around 1500 m of galleries and a 450 m high vertical shaft.Almost 10 km of tunnels provide access to the facilities.

Pöyry contributed to the optimisation of the conceptual design and prepared the basic/ap-proval design for all excavations, participated in tendering and contracting, and delivers the detailed design for the headwater system, numerous caverns and the access tunnels.

The length of the new rail line is to be about 18 kilometres, of which about 8 kilome-tres runs in tunnel. Excavation of the four underground stations using the drill and blast method started in spring 2009.

Pöyry’s services have covered for instance tunnel design, rock and geotechnical engineering, HVAC / electrical / structural engineering, safety planning, environmental impact assessment, bridge design, rail engineering and telecommunications design.
