From the Principal

Last week we farewelled our Year 12 class of 2020. They have had to cope with remote learning, uncertainty and a disrupted year that has meant the usual rituals and privileges of being year 12 have not been afforded them. They have handled this with grace and helped each other weather the hard times. They have displayed the capacity to be creative and agile, this will serve them well in their future studies, careers and family lives.

In their final year they have set the school tone and were good role models with their attitude to study, friendship, work ethic and leadership. I would like to pay tribute to the families and carers of the class of 2020. I know that bringing up teenagers is not easy, particularly in a pandemic. Your support, advice, guidance and love have been key to our students reaching graduation.

The Year 12 parent wellbeing committee has helped our students feel that they are known, valued and cared for. From the Depues

We would like to congratulate the Year 12 2020 cohort who surpassed numerous obstacles as they navigated their

way through the stress of study and the uncertainty of a pandemic. They were wonderful role models for the new Year

12 (2021) who started their HSC course this term. We have heard of meaningful conversaons that have taken place

between students and amongst teachers; stories of resilience and key strategies were swapped. Moving graduaon

off campus to accommodate our parent body and organising a formal on school grounds is no easy task. Mr Ibrahim

(Year 12 Advisor 2020) and Year 12 parents and carers must be thanked for their clear and sustained support of

students throughout the year.

Introducing Year 6 primary students to Tempe High will take place this term. Some primary students have already had

the chance to observe and parcipate in a range of entertaining and instrucve lessons. Students have shown

enthusiasm and curiosity, and our encouraging teachers have allayed their concerns about transioning into high

school. A special thanks to the 2021 Year 7 Advisor, Ms. Eagan, and our Learning and Support Teacher, Ms. Stodart,

for the amazing work they have done to create a smooth and supporve transion.

NAIDOC week marked a moment for educaon and celebraon. During our assembly, we were treated to a

philosophical and engaging lesson from Jagamarra. His charismac presence and deep knowledge of his culture were

inspiring. He managed to enthral over 900 students with his words of wisdom and his equally significant and spiritual

smoking ceremony. Corrine Smith (Indigenous Support) and her team of workers did a wonderful job of organising the

event, and the subsequent acvies for Year 7 that followed the assembly embedded an appreciaon of indigenous

knowledge.

The Depues and the Wellbeing Team are busily working on evaluang classes for next year and restructuring classes

to meet the needs of all students. Feedback from the ‘Tell Them from Me’ survey completed by parents, students and

teachers have provided us with some important direcon and we are grateful for the comprehensive number of

parcipants who took the me to complete the survey . We will connue to make plans and set goals based on the

informaon received from all members of the school community. More informaon about these plans will be

communicated in the New Year.

Our counsellors (Frances and Tomas) have also had a busy year and we would like to thank them for their ongoing

support of all students. They have partnered with teachers, remaining by our side, to ensure that the social-emoonal

wellbeing of students is paramount. Their professional and sustained support have been invaluable to students and

staff.

As we move towards the end of 2020, and as assessments for Years 7-10 come to an end, we are mindful of the

importance of students staying connected to the important skill of reading. Students are encouraged to visit their local

and school library and choose their own texts for reading. We know that sustained reading has a posive impact on

student performance. Ms. Salisbury (the librarian) is taking students on a Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) excursion

to reward our readers who have shown endurance and engagement with their reading throughout the year.

Congratulaons to those students!

We hope all our Tempe Families stay safe and well. Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperaon.

After what has been an exceptionally challenging HSC year, our Year 12 got to see out their schooling in style last week. Like most events this year, things had to be done a little differently.

The formal was held in the school hall, though you wouldn’t know it by the photos. The space was transformed with drapery, lighting and decor. The event was professionally catered, our talented students (along with Peter Morgan) provided the entertainment and a dance floor was set up in a marquee in the quad.

While the formal had to be held onsite, our graduation ceremony which would normally be in the school hall had to be moved off site to allow space for family to attend. As such the Marrickville PCYC was transformed from sporting courts into a graduation space in which our students could be properly recognised.

There was a lot of planning and work that went into making these events happen, and I owe a huge thank you to all the people who assisted behind the scenes.

To Year 12 students and parents, I sincerely hope you all had a wonderful time and that you enjoyed the celebrations.

I will miss you!

Work Experience

Hi Year 10, parents and caregivers....

WORK EXPERIENCE is available by appointment during Term 4, with WEEK 9 (Dec 7-11) as the preferred date.

Understandably, many workplace venues/employers are reluctant to offer work experience opportunities due to ongoing concerns with COVID19. However, it is worth checking, as some may be able to accommodate you.

Students are advised to check that the workplace venue has an active COVID19 SAFETY PLAN, as work experience cannot be approved without one.

You can find a STUDENT PLACEMENT RECORD attached to my message on the School Portal. Students can also come to my office and get a copy if they prefer.

The STUDENT PLACEMENT RECORD must be completed by the student, the employer and parents/ caregivers before a work experience can be approved. Please return to Mr Fawcett once all details have been.

A WORKPLACE GUIDE FOR PARENTS/CAREGIVERS and DEC INSURANCE (CERTIFICATE OF CURRENCY) information can also be found on the school portal or obtained from my office.

Cheers

DANCE

Year 9 and 10 Dance Elecve Classes were privileged to have guest choreographer Christopher Tsatalios teach them over the last fortnight. Christopher, who moves between Sydney and Los Angeles, is a credible performer and choreographer in the world of dance. He was a finalist on Australia’s So You Think You Can Dance in 2014, and recently finished up dancing for Paula Abdul in her residency show in Las Vegas. Other notable performances included dancing with internaonal superstars Ricky Marn, Redfoo, Katy Perry, Janet Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Lil John, Dolly Pardon and Havana Brown, and naonal starts Delta Goodrem, Natalie Bassingthwaite, Samantha Jade and Jessica Mauboy to name a few. He also just choreographed the US version of the Masked Singer for Jojo Siwa and Kandi (who ended up winning the series!), as well as perform on Australian X-Factor and the Voice,

We thank Chris so much for inspiring our dance students, providing dance workshops that they’ll remember forever. The students loved every minute of the workshops and had nothing but posive feedback following them. I am so proud of the energy, effort and excitement they showed.

Year 7 Geography - Liveability and microclimate at Tempe High School. 7 Red and 7 Blue looked at the temperatures around the school as part of their topic liveability. Liveability is a measure of what a place is like to live in according to a parcular criterion. People’s view about the liveability of a place can vary depending on their age, income, cultural background, lifestyle choices, values & beliefs. Microclimate is the climate of a small or restricted area. 7 Blue conducted an experiment on the 16/11/2020 in period 2. We went around in groups with thermometers to measure the temperatures in different places around the school playground. 7 Red also did this experiment on the same day but in period 5. When these results were compared to each other it showed that 7 Red’s results were a lot hoter than 7 Blue’s results. This was because 7 Red conducted their experiment in period 5 which is when the sun is at its strongest. 7 Blue’s highest result was 30 degrees Celsius which was at the oval with no shade, whereas 7 Red’s highest was 39 degrees Celsius which was at the gym area.

Our results suggest that our school has limited access to shade and protecon from the intense heat. It means that our school has many dark surfaces that absorb heat, consequently this makes the area even hoter. The microclimate of the dark rubber gym area is the hotest place in our school. This reduces the liveability of Tempe High School. The immense heat everyone has to withstand during assemblies are horrendous. I suggest building a shade sail or COLA to limit the effect the heat has on Tempe and make assemblies and lunches more enjoyable.

We should also either plant seeds of trees or actual fully-grown trees in areas such as the oval, quad and near the table tennis courts on the sides. This way the areas can have more shade for when people would like to rest meanwhile providing cool air to people near them as trees acvely cool the surrounding area. Commerce News:

Students in Year 9 , 10 Commerce and 11 Economics entered into the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) School Share Market Game in term 2.

The game is designed to complement course work learnt in Commerce and Economics. Students learn about investing and the share market, they then put into practice what they are learning by playing the share market game. Students receive a virtual $50,000 which they invested over a 10 week period which concluded in November, in 220 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get.

As a result of playing the Game students have:

• Developed their knowledge of the share market • Learnt how to research companies • Discovered the importance of wise investment decisions • Gained a greater knowledge of economic and world events • Began to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future.

We are pleased to announce that the following students achieved in the top 100 of the state, out of 65,000 participants (based on the growth of their investments). In order of best performance: Joshua Chen Andy Nguyen Jordan Le, Khoi Nguyen Justin Chor Haydar Chebli, Oscar Paciocco William Nguyen Well done!!!! Your investing future looks bright!
