Success  at  NASA  MSFC •  Since  1985  NASA  MSFC  has  reduced  energy  consump,on  by  over  50%  

•  The  average  annual  u,lity  bill  is  $20M    • Without  the  energy  conserva,on  and  management  program  the  average  annual  u,lity  bill  would  be  over  $40M  

• NASA  MSFC  reduced  29.4%  of  the  30%  energy  reduc,on  goal  for  2006-­‐2015  

• NASA  MSFC  con,nues  its  efforts  in  energy  conserva,on  and  management  

•  To  meet  the  next  energy  reduc,on  for  2015-­‐2025  NASA  MSFC  must  reduce  enough  energy  to  remove  all  electricity  from  a  city  the  size  of  Decatur,  Alabama

Sustainability  Overview • Most  building  in  USA  are  presently  cer,fied  using  LEED  or  Green  Globes  

•  The  most  recent  Execu,ve  Order  (EO  13693)  requires  federal  buildings  to  be  cer,fied  using  Guiding  Principles  Compliance  (GPC)  

•  The  six  Guiding  principles  are:  1.  Employ  Integrated  Design  principles  2.  OpJmize  Energy  Performance  3.  Protect  and  Conserve  Water  4.  Enhance  Indoor  Environmental  quality  5.  Reduce  the  Environmental  Impact  of  Materials  6.  Assess  and  Consider  climate  Change  Risks  

Other  Sustainable  OperaGons • MSFC  Chilled  Water  Facility:  

1.  Changed  from  34  local  chillers  to  10  chillers  in  a  Central  Facility  2.  Has  1.2  M  gallon  Thermal  Storage  Tank  3.  Operated  during  “Peak”  Time  of  Use  (TOU)  to  reduce  electricity  costs  4.  Peak  shaving  or  opera,on  during  “Peak”  saves  $400K-­‐$500K  annually  5.  Uses  energy  from  a  heat  exchanger  during  colder  months  which  eliminates  

chiller  opera,ons

Energy  Management  Control  System  (EMCS) • NASA  MSFC  has  operated  an  EMCS  for  over  30  years  •  The  NASA  MSFC  EMCS  operate  24/7  -­‐  365  •  The  EMCS  presently  monitors  approximately  100,000  points  • Newer  sustainable  buildings  has  as  many  as  700  points  and  60  meters  

•  EMCS  monitoring,  analysis  and  integra,on  allows  for  maximum  energy  monitoring  and  management
