WELCoMEWe are delighted to host our inaugural Indian Family Wealth Forum 2015 today in Mumbai.

Our next event in Mumbai is our Indian Private Banking Forum 2015 - on Thursday 27th August. Please also mark the date of our 2016 Family Wealth event in your diary now - Wednesday 6th April.

Business promoters and their families face increasing challenges when it comes to managing and protecting their assets – both in the current generation and for the future.

Succession planning, whether for the business or private family structure, is becoming a major issue for wealthy Indian families. On the one hand, this is driven by regulatory initiatives and tax transparency. On the other, it is down to the need to find the right people, with the right intentions, to take the reins. And in an era where divorce and other disputes are more frequent, the hurdles get higher. Adding to the burden is the uncertainty over which trust structures and other solutions advisers in India can put in place for families – without falling foul of the law. Or the tax man.

Bolstered by the growing acceptance among wealthy Indians of the need for help to achieve their goals – this creates new opportunities for professional services firms and wealth managers. Yet they must understand what’s required, and be able to bring together the relevant players to offer the right solutions. Family offices are growing in popularity as a way to handle the myriad of issues that need to be tackled. As a result, the focus must be determining the right structures and decision-making process. Adding value with actions, not words, should be the only goal.

Today’s agenda includes presentations and panel discussions to cover these issues and others – all of which are key for the development of a more specific focus on finding solutions for wealthy Indian families.

We are also video-recording the presentations and writing up content from the discussions – and will send this to you.

Thank you for your support and attendance. We hope you enjoy the forum.

Jersey’s attraction

Jersey has provided financial services to Indian businesses, financial institutions, families and high net worth individuals, including non resident Indians, for many years. The jurisdiction is an attractive location to the Indian investment community thanks to the maturity and robustness of its regulatory and legal systems, its tax neutral platform, close proximity to the UK and European markets, and a concentration of financial planning and structuring expertise.

Wide Ranging expertise

Jersey’s success is rooted in over 50 years of experience in delivering private wealth management services, together with its political and economic stability, sophisticated infrastructure of laws, impressive network of specialist firms, and expertise – with over 12,500 employees, highlighting Jersey as having the largest specialist workforce of any European International Finance Centre (IFC).

Last year marked the 30th anniversary of Jersey’s Trust Law, which was established in 1984 and has since become a model for others and now benefits from an incredibly strong and impressive body of case law. Complementing this is the Jersey Foundation, which celebrated its fifth anniversary last year and remains incredibly popular, with the rate of formation continuing to outstrip that of similar structures in other jurisdictions. This, together with Jersey’s flexible Company Law, has given Jersey a full range of wealth management vehicles and allowed the jurisdiction to firmly establish itself as a specialist centre for cross-border family and estate planning.

equally important in today’s environment is Jersey’s ability to demonstrate substance, expertise and a rational response to transparency, which is proving increasingly attractive to Indian hnW individuals and families. Backed up by a strong public balance sheet with a AA+ rating from Standard and Poor’s, clients continue to be comforted by Jersey’s political and economic stability as well as its mature and clear approach to client confidentiality and data security. Investors also value the strength of Jersey’s banking sector, with almost half of the global top 25 banks represented in Jersey and the jurisdiction benefiting from a strong Tier 1 Capital base across the sector.

Gateway to Western Markets

Jersey’s relationship with the City of London has been a powerful feature of its offering and helps to position Jersey as the gateway for investment in both London and European markets. For example, more than 80 Jersey companies are listed on exchanges worldwide, with a combined market capitalisation of more than US$248 billion.

Jersey has developed particular expertise in structuring investments into UK real estate, much of which is undertaken through Jersey trust structures. Whilst its close and unique relationship with the City of London continues to appeal to private clients, Jersey is also a gateway to europe and beyond, and an ideal choice for Indian investors with an increasingly international outlook. A growing number of internationally mobile non-resident Indians are also finding that Jersey’s professional approach to wealth management is a good fit for their global aspirations and wealth planning requirements.
