Course Description

Dispute resolution is one of the fastest-growing fields and academic disciplines both in Ireland and internationally, offering professional opportunities in the corporate, legal, educational, political, HR, health, and community settings, as well as many others. With the new Arbitration Bill 2008 and the Report by the Law Reform Commission on ADR, legislative provision and a heightened demand for dispute resolution services is predicted.

The MA in Dispute Resolution focuses on a wide range of non-adversarial dispute resolution processes across a number of different sectors, including family, commercial, construction, and workplace. Course Description

Students who have a strong interest in reading, current affairs, history and politics will enjoy the study of law. Much of the workload on the LLB will involve reading case law, legislation, articles and textbooks which enables the student to form their own opinions on particular legal issues and problems. While most people begin their study of law with the idea of becoming a solicitor or barrister, a law degree also offers graduates the opportunity to use the skills acquired during their studies in other occupations throughout the world of commerce, the financial services industry, journalism and the Civil Service.

A law degree provides analytical, problem-solving and research-orientated training which is highly-valued by employers.

To facilitate student research, each student will be provided with complementary copies of the key legal text in each core module. Students will also obtain written and

oral feedback on their performance in continuous assessment so that performance can be improved from stage to stage.

LLB (Hons) Irish Law (Level 8)The LLB (Hons) programme will be of interest to those who have a strong sense of justice (both legal and social), who possess a questioning mind and enjoy identifying and applying solutions to problems.

Honorable Society of the King’s Innsthis LLB degree is accredited and incorporates all subjects mandated by the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.

The atmosphere in Independent Colleges is excellent. The lecturers all know you by name so you consider yourself to be more than just a student number on an exam script. This personal approach gives you the confidence to handle whatever challenges might come along, either in exams and assignments or, once you’ve qualified, your professional career.

A combination of article portfolios, academic papers, seminar presentations, multimedia production, examination and end-of-year dissertation tests students’ journalistic and academic skills development over the course of the programme.

Having attended two different colleges already to complete a BA and MA, I have yet to see anywhere with facilities as good as Independent Colleges. The newsroom for the journalism students is unrivalled. Every classroom has AV facilities that actually work and there is a large, clean and comfortable canteen/social area to take a break in. Not only this, the campus itself is as central a location as possible, the staff are friendly, warm and helpful and the lecturers are that and more. And of course the free newspaper in the morning makes life just that little bit better.

Patrick Fennelly, MA in Journalism

The reputation of the College opened the doors for me in many of the national broadcasters such as RTE, Newstalk, and Today FM. It gave me the confidence to pursue a career that I always aspired to.

Marie Crowe, MA in Journalism

The MA in Journalism is an extremely practical course. The topics we cover are relevant and varied and we get to put all we have learned in the classroom to the test during the internship at Independent News and Media.

Úna Mulhall, MA in Journalism

The MA in Journalism course in Independent College is a very well run and organised taught Masters. The lecturers are very experienced and supportive, the college itself has excellent resources with new Mac computers, a newsroom and student intranet so you are never far from college as you can log in online. The course itself covers a wide range of journalistic styles, subjects and topics. The workload is quite heavy but with strong support and self-discipline I hope to meet all deadlines and graduate comfortably in October.

Course Description

This honours programme can be completed in three years if taken full-time during the day or over a longer period if undertaken as evening study. Students typically select three disciplines in Level One and continue to specialise in two of those disciplines into Levels Two and Three. Students taking Psychology or Counselling & Psychotherapy will follow the route prescribed by the relevant professional bodies.

History History is the study of our human past, with special attention to the written record. Historians attempt to objectively investigate the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians also investigate the nature of history and its usefulness. This includes discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing a perspective on contemporary challenges. Our course provides a comprehensive historical overview with a particular emphasis on Irish and European events.

Sociology Sociology is the study of human

societies and is a social science that

uses various methods of empirical

investigation and critical analysis

to develop and refine a body of

knowledge and theory about human

social activity. Sociology is a very

broad discipline. Its traditional

focuses have included class

relations, religion, secularization,

modernity, culture and deviance,

and its approaches have included

both qualitative and quantitative

research techniques. Sociology has

gradually expanded its focus to

include subjects, such as medical,

military and penal institutions and the

internet, amongst others

Psychology Psychology is an applied discipline which involves the scientific study of mental functions and behaviours. Psychologists study such phenomena as perception, cognition, attention, emotion, motivation, personality, behaviour and interpersonal relationships. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behaviour, while also exploring the underlying

physiological and neurological processes. Psychological knowledge is applied to various spheres of human activity including the family, education, employment, and to the treatment of mental health problems. Psychology includes many sub-fields that span areas as diverse as human development, sports, health, industry, media and law. Psychology incorporates research from the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities.

Art History Art history is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts, i.e. genre, design, format, and look. This includes the “major” arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture as well as the “minor” arts of ceramics, furniture, and other decorative objects. Art history encompasses several methods of studying the visual arts. Aspects of the discipline overlap encompassing the connoisseurs, the critics, and the academic art historians”. As a discipline, art history is distinguished from art criticism.

Journalism Studies Journalism is an exciting and varied field of study, encompassing diverse areas from politics to popular culture. From landmark journalism dating back to WWI to the contemporary challenges posed for traditional journalism by the internet, journalism studies engages with provocative issues ranging from celebrity culture in our media to the diminishing importance of international news, asking what consequences changing priorities in our media have for our society.

BA (Hons) in General Arts – (Level 8)Independent Colleges is offering a new and exciting General Arts degree that covers nine of the most interesting and engaging disciplines within the humanities. These are Psychology • Sociology • History • History of Art • Journalism • Literature • Philosophy • Psychoanalysis • Counselling & Psychotherapy.

Literature English literature is the study of literature written in the English language and includes writing as diverse as the varieties and dialects of English spoken around the world. In academia, the term often labels departments and programmes practising English studies in secondary and tertiary educational systems. Despite the variety of authors of English literature, works of William Shakespeare remain paramount throughout the English-speaking world. Our programme studies the broad canon of literature with particular emphasis on how Dublin has shaped and impacted the production of literature as well as other urban contexts.

Philosophy Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning subjects such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. There are at least two senses in which the term philosophy is used. In the more formal sense, philosophy is an academic discipline focusing on the fields of metaphysics, logic, ethics, epistemology, and aesthetics. In the more informal sense, a philosophy is an attitude to life or way or principle of living whose focus is on resolving the most basic existential questions about the human condition. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing fundamental questions by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on reasoned argument.

Psychoanalysis Psychoanalysis is a body of ideas developed by Austrian physician Sigmund Freud and continued by

others. It is primarily devoted to the study of human psychological functioning and behaviour, although it also can be applied to societies. Psychoanalysis has three applications: a method of investigation of the mind; a set of theories about human behaviour; a method of treatment of psychological or emotional illness. Under the broad umbrella of psychoanalysis there are many different theoretical orientations regarding the underlying theory of understanding of human development. The various approaches in treatment called “psychoanalytic” vary as much as the different theories do. For example, Freudian psychoanalysis refers to a specific type of treatment in which the “analysand” (analytic patient) verbalizes thoughts, including free associations, fantasies, and dreams, from which the analyst formulates the unconscious conflicts causing the patient’s symptoms and character problems, and interprets them for the patient to create insight for resolution of the problems. On our degree programme the work of both Freud and Lacan play a central role.

Counselling & Psychotherapy Psychotherapy or personal counselling with a psychotherapist, is an intentional interpersonal relationship used by trained psychotherapists to aid a client or patient in problems of living. It aims to increase the individual’s sense of their own well-being. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behaviour change that are designed to

improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family). Psychotherapy may also be performed by practitioners with a number of different qualifications, including psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, occupational therapists, licensed clinical social workers, counsellors, psychiatric nurses, psychoanalysts, and psychologists. Indeed, psychotherapy can be a profession in its own right, and in the United Kingdom it is voluntarily regulated by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy aims to assist the individual to overcome the psychological difficulties that he or she might encounter in life. In order to do this, a psychotherapist must have a thorough understanding of how the mind works, how we adopt particular stances in relation to the world and other people, and how we develop particular interests.

Psychotherapy is a field that is rapidly developing in Ireland. Psychotherapists are employed in the health services and in many caring professional organizations which address mental health issues. Some psychotherapists also work in the prison service, dealing with both adult and young offenders. Many psychotherapists in Ireland work in private practice with clients who are referred by their GP or psychiatrist, or who self-refer in order to address particular issues in their lives.
