This scene is from The Aviator. This is similar to our scene as it also shows the hand washing with the taps and soap in view.

We wanted to do an over the head shot as it would have been much clearer, but as we did not shoot in a studio we did not have unlimited roof space.

This is a screen grab from Brook’s suicide in The Shawkshank Redemption. In order to create tension before the hanging, there is a close up on the feet. We used the same idea in our thriller as it portrays a sense of foreboding while not being over the top.

This is a conventional shot and it is used in a lot of Thrillers. This is because it leaves the audience waiting in anticipation for the moment they know is going to happen; death.

This scene is from Kidulthood. The shot of just the feet after the hanging is extremely emotive as it shows the vulnerability of the character and the lifelessness of the body.

We used the same shot in our Thriller, mainly because we did not have a harness to safely shoot a wide shot of a hanging. However in the end it suited our Thriller much better, as it is more grotesque to see dangling feet and much more life like.

In both shots there is the object which the character jumped off to achieve the hanging. Even if it is just in the background it emphasises the height the character jumped from and the certainty of it.

This image shows a man walking down a corridor, and is very similar to our own Thriller. By using a mid shot, it allows facial expressions and body posture to be read. Using normal light enables the audience to clearly see what is going on as well. The costume is similar here as well, as both are dressed smartly it conveys that they each hold a degree of authority.

Our Thriller is called Gradual Decline but these other Thriller titles all use a similar font. This means that the audience have little impression for what is to come as the font gives no clue to the details of the film. Also, the stark contrast between the black background and white font means that the title stands out vividly.
