In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms ad conventions of real media products?

our case studies of similar genres of the artist we chose made this possible by look at the print products of artist such as Adele it gave us good ideas on how we wanted our print products to look.

The main image of our CD front cover is almost a replica of Adeles 21 album, which we thought was effective due to the nature of the song we used, as the concepts of their songs are usually the same.

The simplicity of the print products of my case studies such as Adele and Ed sheeran formulated ideas for our group for our front cover for e.g the plain and bold mask head that we’re used on the front cover. The main image on our CD cover was also very much influenced by Adeles CD cover picture, as you will see my from case study Adele is looking down which creates a feeling of emotion, emotion which reflects her music, so we wanted to used a picture of Edward with a similar pose to reflect his emotion and the genre of music he represents.

The simplicity of the print products of my case studies such as Adele and Ed sheeran formulated ideas for our group for our front cover for e.g the plain and bold mask head that we’re used on the front cover.

For our magazine advert, the image we used followed the same theme as the CD cover , where Edward is looking away from the camera with the same kind of expression, this idea was also used from Adele and Ed sheerans Magazine adverts. The layout and conventions of typical Magazine adverts helped us to plan out ours, the quote that we used was inspired by The Ed Sheeran advert from my case study as we thought it would be a good aspect to make the advert seem more real. Some of the aspects of the ed sheeran advert are the same conventions for e.g. the quotations are both at the bottom, however in order to create better composition we placed the heading and the album cover at the top. The same way Ed Sheerans name is written in the same font for everything that is being promoted of Ed sheeran, we have used the same font on the advert that we have used on the back of the CD cover.

Similarly Maverick Sabre’s ‘Lonely are the brave’ Album cover was also an inspiration for the layout and concept of our CD cover, the dark colours used and also the image was also influence for a groups ideas on how we wanted our CD cover to look. This album cover was also a huge inspiration for the font that we used on our album cover. The font we used is quite classic and plain, we thought that it would be a good idea to use a plain font as the back of the CD is quite busy. The way we positioned the heading is also influenced by maverick sabres album, the heading is places at the top by mavericks head we wanted to do this because we thought it worked for the album cover, and as we used a similar image we figured that the positioning of the heading would compliment it.

Our back cover however doesn’t necessarily represent our case studies as the ones on our case studies are typical back covers are quite plain, whereas for our back cover we decided to use something more bright and interesting as our front cover is plain. The back cover which is mostly leaves with the song titles embedded in them correlates with our music video as majority of it was located in a park, this shows good continuity.

Our inside inserts of our print products also demonstrate good correlation with our music video as we have used a image taken from the video of a swan, the use of this image also was inspired by our case studies as it is plain.

Music video In music videos there are a number of codes and conventions that are used to make

up a good video. Some conventions are used to distinguish a certain genre. There are three areas that are used to break down music videos , camera, editing , mise en scene and sound, All of these elements where influenced by the case studies we

produced for three different music videos all of which were hugely influential in the creation of our video.

Mise en scene The themes that we used in our video was very much influenced by j.cole- lost ones video. Both songs and videos are about a couples who are going through things. In j.coles video the locations used are places that a normal person would be located, most of the locations are link to places where him and his girlfriend spend time together, since the video is about jcole and his girlfriend the use of location is relevant and makes the video more real. We incorporated this into our video, for example almost all of the locations we used in the video were places that Ed and his girlfriend had been together, also a lot of the times he was with his girlfriend which made the story of the song and video easier to follow. The lip syncing in the video creates a close relationship with the audience as they feel as if they know the artist.

Mise en scene • Our video was made up of the present which shows how Ed is feeling now and flash backs which shows

how things used to be and what he is thinking about. The use of flashback were influence by The scrips video ‘breakeven’, The movement between past and present in the narrative is a very post-modern technique, where traditional structures are eroded. The video is very similar to our video in the sense of the story of a failing/failed relationship and the artist thinking about the relationship once was. The use of black and white used for the flashbacks is a action code according to barths theory saying that black and white signifies the past. The use of monochrome in our video makes it clear of when it is reality and when Ed is having a flash back, all of this idea was used from the scrips video.

Mise en scene The main locations we used for our video here quite urban areas which gave the video a more

realistic feel, this was influenced by Ed sherrans video “A team” which has settings in urban areas also. We wanted our video to be set in similar locations so that it actually has the Ed sheeran feel to

it. One of the main locates we used were Ed Is having majority of his flashbacks is in a park. A Ed sheerans genre of music is pop/folk, we thought that this location would complement the song we chose, also as the song is called little bird we thought it would be a good idea to have some of the

video set in a park because that’s where birds are located. The clothes that we clothes for Ed to wear was chosen specifically to look like Ed sheeran, in the A

team music video when Ed sheeran appears he is wearing a hooded jumper, jeans and trainers, not only the A team but I majority of Ed sheerans music video he wears casual clothes, so we decided

that Ed should wear similar costume for the music video to help him take on the persona of Ed sheeran.

Camera In the professor green read all about it video, shot reverse shots are used to create

the argument scene between a boy and his mother, this influenced our music video as we decided that we also wanted to have a argument scene in our video. J.coles video also has an argument scene which also expired our video, especially as the argument

is also between a couple. The Flashback we used in our video, which was a handheld shot of Ed and Shantelle

(the girlfriend), was also influenced by Professor Green’s music video. This shot gives was effective because it gives a effect that make the flashback feel more real.

The way the camera changes from Ed singing directly to the camera this is a mixture between narrative and performance, where Ed is realistic, then he is a celebrity for

the performance bit, this shifts the narration between 3rd and 1st person, which is a post-modern technique commonly used in music videos. This concept of the video shows the audience that there are two sides to Ed sheeran the celebrity and the

normal guy, this allow the audience to feel closer to the artist.

Camera Even though Alica keys wasn’t one of my case studies her music video ‘new day’ was influencial for our music video. Her whole video consist of the lyrics of the song being written in different ways I different places, we used this is idea and decided to write some of our lyrics on pieces of white paper surrounded with leafs. The leafs that we used to surround the pieces of paper follows on the park theme that is used throughout our video and print and digipack.

Editing One of the videos that encouraged our editing for our music video was Ed Sheeran’s -A team video. We incorporated a time lapse action code to connote time passing. As the main focus of A team is for ed Sheeran to take more of a acting role, we tried to

use this idea In our video also with the use of flashbacks. In the video we also have a part where we reverse all of the flashsbacks/memories that Ed is having, this creates emotion because it represent all the thoughts going

through in Ed’s head.

SoundLip syncing in our video was very important to show the performance side

of Ed.Also in other folk/pop videos we found that they had a lot of lip syncing so

we decided to incorporate this in order to follow conventions.
