In Motion Ministries April 2012

Having been involved in short-term missions in some capacity for the

past 26 years, I can say that I have seen and heard about everything.

Many people deeply believe in the importance of short-term missions

and others have serious doubt regarding its value. But one thing can-

not be denied, short-term missions is a powerful force these days and

it looks like it is here to stay.

Barna Research produced a fascinating report that addresses the issue of short-term missions and its role in Christianity today. You can view this report in its entirety at the following link: http://www.barna.org/donorscause-articles/22-despite-benefits-few-americans-have-experienced-short-term-mission-trips. I would guess that it is obvious that I believe in short-term missions

and the important role in plays in Christian missions. The impact it has

had on thousands of people, both those who participate in short-term

mission teams and those they minister to around the world, is truly a

powerful thing. I am the product of a short-term mission trip in many

ways and have allowed my experiences to shape my life decisions. At

the age of 18 I was profoundly impacted by the fact that God wanted to

use me to share His goodness with people around the world.

Short-term mission teams have become a powerful tool in the arsenal

of the full-time missionary. Full-time missionaries are using short-term

mission teams in the following ways: church planting, evangelism,

church leadership training, children’s ministry, medical clinics, build-

ing projects, sports outreach, and so much more. Not to mention the

fact that when done correctly a short-term mission team is a breath of

fresh air to the full-time missionary and their family.

It is understandable that some people doubt the benefit of short-term

missions. Much harm has been done by short-

term mission teams. Some have gone to the

mission field without the support of a local pas-

tor or full-time missionary. They blow into

town and do ministry that fulfills their egos and

then they blow out of town leaving nothing

behind to support those they have ministered

to. Short-term mission teams with a selfish atti-

tude have also done much damage on the mis-

sion field. It is very important for short-term

mission teams to work with a local ministry

and to do so with a heart of service. They

should be on the field to

support the full-time workers in that location.

With proper planning, a heart to serve and proper training, a short-

term mission team will be a huge blessing to those they serve. And as a

short-term worker, the benefit of their experience will stick with them

for a lifetime, if they allow it to.

IMM’s passion is to: provide full-time workers with the service they

need and to provide short-term workers with the opportunity to be

used of God in a powerful way and to experience a life impact like no

other experience can provide.
