As has been said on numerous occasions, this is a must see event for members, so if you have the time please make an effort to visit the Legislative Assembly Chamber of the Victorian Parliament during the MUNA weekend. Presidents Report

It was good to see honorary member Brian Kimpton on Thurs-day night. Brian was joined by our other guests Shirley Frewen, Sue McArthur, Jean Stringer and Jean’s daughter Karen Bignell.

Susan Hayden, who visited for the first time after expressing an interest in joining thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the talk by Leading Senior Constable Gary J Oram from the Safer Communities – Proactive Policing Unit based at Moorabbin.

Heather is seeking volunteers for this year’s Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) being held on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May. Correspondence from MUNA Chairman Joe Somers during the week indicated that there will be 40 or 41 teams attending this year however the committee has not been able to obtain a reduction in the weekend surcharge being applied by the event management company that pro-vides the services at Parliament House which will leave the district with a deficit.

Although we are not sponsoring a team this year, we have agreed, through Youth Service Director Rob, to donate the $500 allocated for sponsoring a team towards reducing this deficit. As has been said on numerous occasions, this is a must see event for members, so if you have the time please make an effort to visit the Legislative Assembly Chamber of the Victorian Parliament during the MUNA weekend.

It is pleasing to see that our involvement with local community groups is increasing. Chris D’Arcy and I attended the recent AGM for the Sandy Beach Centre which was also attended by Bayside Mayor Laurie Evans and Murray Thompson.

Chris has also had a meeting with the manager of the Chel-tenham Community Centre (CCC) to explore other ways we may be able to assist. to provide excursions as a group, for example the movies or mini golf that cost less for their children through the CCC. Chris has also indicated that he will accept an invitation to the Centre AGM on Monday May 5 and the Centre have also advised that they are in need of community members to join their Board. Unfortunately the team of Tony Phillips, James Glen-wright, Greg Every and myself were unable to replicate the recent success at Conference and were soundly beaten at the Rotary Club of Mordialloc’s Interplast Golf Day on Friday at Woodlands although James and Greg did win a raffle prize.

Patterson River Golf Club Many of you have asked when can we play Patterson River Golf Club again? The Pro-Shop advised the after-noon of Easter Sunday ( 20th April ) is a quiet time. For those of you who are interested we are planning 9 holes @ $25 per golfer with a 2pm hit off time. That would get us back to the Clubhouse around 4:30pm – Snack food and drinks will be available at your cost, the Clubhouse closes at 6pm. Please note the Bistro is open from 12 noon if you would like to lunch beforehand. Non-golfers are obviously wel-come to socialise with us. Please RSVP to Jill at [email protected] by next Sunday ( 13th April ) so we can book tee times. Warmest regards, Brian & Jill

This Week’s Speaker; Garry Oram Topic; Safer Communities Gary J ORAM, Leading Senior Constable is part of the SAFER COMMUNITIES - PROACTIVE POLICING UNIT based out of the Moorabbin Police Station serving the Bayside area. Gary started as a Night Shift Guard in 1978 and is now the Neighbourhood Coordinator for Bayside. The Proactive Policing Unit has one Supervisor, three Crime Prevention Officers and three Youth Resource Officers. Most positions are held by females. The YROs work with local youth and seek to divert them fro the Court system. They have a 95% success rate. The CPOs undertake audits of commercial premises, speak to schools and community groups and work with Neighbourhood Watch. Gary noted the increasing use of technology such as CCTV and facial recognition software to proactively pre-vent troublemakers access areas such as Southland and Frankston. Once a banning notice is put on an adoles-cent they cannot access these areas even with a parent and the technology ensures that local security quickly picks them up. Th YROs know the names of most of the youths who are likely to be in trouble and between them and Facebook it does not take long for them to be appre-hended when they step out of line! The following is a summary of the points Gary made;

If you are concerned about your safety or a suspicious event or person do not hesitate to ring 000. But follow these steps; 1) Stay calm and listen to the person on the other

end of the phone 2) Answer their questions simply and quickly 3) The first question will be “what State are you

in? as the call centre is in NSW 4) The next will be about what Service you want;

Police / Ambulance / Fire 5) When you answer Police you will be diverted back

to Victoria. 6) Quickly let them know the problem / location so

that a vehicle can be dispatched promptly. When out on Public Transport always stay near other people, keep your possessions close to you and, if pos-sible stay near a CCTV camera. When out walking avoid isolated areas on your own, en-sure you have high visibility clothing and preferably avoid evenings. At home you should have a Safety Plan so you know

what to do if something goes wrong. Know your neigh-bours and a network of who you would call in an emer-gency (as well as 000). Make sure that your house number is clear so that Emer-gency Services can find it readily when needed. Also ensure that unnecessary foliage is cutback to prevent hiding places for any would be miscreant. A low fence allows natural surveillance in and out of the premises. The front entrance should have a solid door with a peep hole and a steel security door with a one way mesh. Care should be taken that the peep hole is correctly fitted and at the right height for the occupants. Keep sheds and garages locked and tools and ladders secured. Modern day criminals do not carry their imple-ments with them but look to pick them up on the premis-es. Put window locks on all windows. Have smoke alarms fitted and ensure that you change over the batteries reg-ularly. Ask the local fire brigade to help if you cannot do it yourself. Fit burglar alarms and outside sensor lights. Alarms can be local, back to base or to smartphone or tablet. If someone comes to the door; 1) Always ask who it is 2) Keep security doors locked 3) Ask for identification 4) Be careful who you let in 5) Don’t let them know you’re home alone For single women on their own it is careful to avoid given this fact away if a stranger comes to your door. Use a ruse to indicate the presence of other people in the house. Use “we” not “I”. Always ask for identification and LOOK PROPERLY at the photo. Tests have revealed that people can pass of the most ridiculously false identification badges because people do not look closely at them.
